About this project
The Bear is a unique children's book. Unique in that it isn't so much for children as it is for parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, anyone really. Kids love the lush and colourful art while adults relate to the heartfelt prose that accompanies it. If you would like a glimpse into the world of The Bear, please take a look at our site: http://mybear.net/
Following the success of our first volume, we are looking to publish our newest volume as well as re-print the first one and we need your help!
The Bear will be a wonderful, hardcover book with 52 glossy pages of illustrated content. The cover is a soft fabric with the title being embossed in a striking white.
Ryan Sohmer is an award-winning comic author. His works include Least I Could Do, Looking For Group, and Gutters. After the birth of his son, Sohmer began capturing the nuances and fleeting moments of being a new parent in the hopes that he would have a record of those first precious years of parenthood. He looked for an artist who could match the humour and wit of his words as well as create the sweetest animals anyone has every laid ones on. He found that artist in Becky Dreistadt.
Becky Dreistadt is an artist working out of sunny California with her husband, Frank. Her online comic, Tiny Kitten Teeth, is a series of paintings about the adventures of Mewsli, a fish out of water in Owltown. She's also currently working on Capture Creatures as well as various other side projects.
For us, Kickstarter has become more than a funding website. It is a place where fans can have a hand in the creation of the things they love. It is one thing to purchase a book you enjoy, it is something else entirely to know that you are directly responsible for the production of a book you love. We developed such a wonderful relationship with our fans during the first Kickstarter, it would be a shame to not include them in the production of the second book.
When our website goes live, it will have a page thanking everyone who helped The Bear become a real, tangible book. We love each and everyone one of our fans and we cherish being able to include you in our projects.
I know what you are all thinking: after the success of the first book, why aren't you taking baths in champagne? It's a valid question, I do love champagne. The extra money we made was used to fund the extras and stretch goals from the campaign, increase the number of books we ordered, pay the Kickstarter and Amazon fees, and investing in the art for volume 2.
So why do we need more money than last time and what will it be used for? Here is how the money breaks-down:
$24,000 - Print cost for 5,000 copies of Volume 2. This includes the actual cost to publish the book (textured cover, high-quality paper, and printing in Canada) as well as the shipping cost and any associated fees.
$16,000 - Print cost for re-printing 2,000 copies of Volume 1. This includes the actual cost to publish the book (textured cover, high-quality paper, and printing in Canada) as well as the shipping cost and any associated fees.
These beautiful pieces of Becky's original art are pre-matted with an outside dimension of 11"x17". They are are gouache on watercolour paper.
Kickstarter doesn't add the International Shipping for you, unfortunately. When you make your pledge, you will need to manually alter the amount you are pledging to reflect the shipping amount. It's a pain but it's the only way to do it.
Would you like a print and a onesie? 2 books and a toddler tee? No problem! Simply increase your pledge by their respective amounts and we'll have a section for you to fill out in the Backer Survey once the Kickstarter has ended.
An extra book (volume 1 or 2) - add $30
Onesie - add $25
Toddler Tee - add $25
Canvas Print - add $90
The Bear Blanket - add $90

Risks and challenges
As with any project, there are certain challenges that can arise to derail you. Files can be deleted, printer can go bankrupt, trucks carrying our books can drive into the river (this hasn't happened but it could). We are going to keep everyone in the loop by updating often and replying to comments and questions as quickly as possible.
We will do everything within our power to meet our launch deadline and, if for whatever reason we are delayed, we will communicate with our Backers every step of the way.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
