About this project
Hello, Kickstarter! My name is Dan Shapley, founder of the App-Different Development Studio, and I'm here with a project that's a bit different than what you're used to seeing. There are two parts to the story here: Part I covers the App-Different Community concept while Part II focuses on the game itself.
A special deal for all potential backers: During the course of this Kickstarter campaign, we've made our app, "THE KING PONG PROJECT" available for FREE download in the Apple App Store. That's right! Without pledging anything at all, you can download the app right now by clicking here.
PART I: What’s so “different” about this project?
This is not a simple "help me fund my app" project. Living up to our name, App-Different is undertaking an entirely new approach to app development & game design. We are looking to construct a community website where you can take an active part in the building of apps via crowdsourcing.
We've decided to open the creative side of our business to you, the end-user, so that we can design these apps together.
That's right, you can be the creative talent and the decision maker. You tell us which apps to pursue and how they should be designed. Using this model, you can take part in creating our first community game, "KING PONG" (As well as other apps down the road).
Here's how it works:
You will receive access to the members only section of our community website, the soon to be revamped: app-different.com. You will have voting rights to various decisions regarding the direction and design of our apps. At different intervals, we will post ideas, concepts, artwork, level designs, etc., for you to vote on. We will in turn develop the app based on the results of your votes and feedback.
Additionally, there will be contests (with prizes and cash awards) for you to submit your own ideas and designs, as well as forums for you to discuss the app development, and whatever else comes along as we progress.
Show us what you've got!
Participation is voluntary. Pick a project that interests you and get involved as much or as little as you want. Depending on your contribution, rewards will vary from simple recognition/bragging rights to developer credits to App-Different swag and cash prizes. While you earn achievement points, we'll track and display your participation via "Leader Boards" for all to see. Gain contract work with us or even other development houses that appreciate your talent. Or take what you've learned and branch off into your own development studio. We want to be your springboard!
Crowdsourcing of app development is pretty new territory, but the potential is huge! KING PONG is our first attempt using this method, but if this project is successful, we plan to launch many more apps in a similar fashion, and broaden the scope of the App-Different community. Let's Make This Happen!
PART II: ABOUT KING PONG®
Remember when console games were just simple fun? Sure, the graphics were limited, but we really didn't mind. Deep down, we all understand that more important to a good game is the game play itself. Everything else is just window dressing. The memorable games are fun to play. This is why Ms. Pac-Man and Galaga are still household names, while 99% of iOS games are not. App-Different is determined to bring the fun back to console gaming. Is Apple TV even a game console? Well no....not yet. But that's about to change. Big time.
"CHANGING THE GAME" with App-Different
As noted above, during the course of this Kickstarter project, you can download THE KING PONG PROJECT from the App Store. It's available for you to test out the basic functionality and generate ideas. Once you have the app, you will notice that it's currently a pretty basic Pong-style game. Yes, this is intentional. (Hence the name: THE KING PONG PROJECT).
It's still fun to play, but we want to make it awesome. And we want you to help us do it.The framework is in place, and we've got some ideas for the direction to take, but it will really be up to you to tell us how this game will turn out. Exploding bricks? Paddles with lasers? A big gorilla throwing barrels around? YOU VOTE, YOU DECIDE! (In the event of a stalemate, Batman will be the tie-breaker.)
Okay, but seriously...why PONG???
Not just pong, KING PONG! We might be new to iOS gaming, but so is Apple TV as a gaming console. So what better place to start than at the beginning? If you think about it, PONG is the essence of a console game: Two paddles and a ball. Bring your own skill, reflexes, and trash-talking.
We've already built the foundation. You can test the game for free. Play it solo, device to device via bluetooth, or go console mode on your big screen using Apple TV. Jot down some ideas, and bring them back to the community for discussion.
Waitaminute...what's all this about Apple TV being a game console? That's impossible, right?
This game is designed to use the iPhone 4S, iPad2, (or uh, "The New iPad”) as a ‘controller’ for the game action on the big screen. While the game itself is actually running on your iPhone, the video is displayed on your TV.
(Note: KING PONG will play on an iPod Touch or earlier versions of iPhone as well, but only the 4S or iPad can send video to the TV via AirPlay. In a 2-player game, only one device needs to use Airplay, so the second device can be an iPod or older iPhone.)
When in AirPlay mode, we do not simply mirror the iPhone screen. We show a completely different display than what's on the TV -so that your focus is on the big screen, while the smaller device acts as a dedicated game controller.
We've obtained a provisional patent on the method we've devised allowing our games to be played on the TV via the motions you make with the phone in your hand. Similar in game play to the Nintendo Wii. For KING PONG in particular, you can control the paddle by tilting the phone up and down. We call this method AirMotion, and we think it’s a pretty big deal.
Alternatively, you will be able to control the big-screen paddle by swiping your finger up and down on the iPhone or iPad screen. And for the purist who grumbles, “Don't they understand that you can't really play a PONG game without a paddle wheel controller?” Well, we’re here to tell you that we do understand, and we bring you that option as well. -Via a virtual paddle wheel on the iPhone screen:
Just "grip" this on-screen wheel with 2 or 3 fingers and spin back and forth. Now put on your best Zeppelin shirt, kick back in your bean bag chair, and relive the glory days!
KING PONG is only the first of several "AirMotion enabled" games that we've got lined up for development. Apple TV is still considered a "hobby" by Apple, but they've already sold millions of them, and we all know what's going to happen once Apple gets serious about it. App-Different plans to be there when this thing explodes. And it will.
If you would like to contribute, we have a wide selection of rewards to choose from. The choice is yours, it just depends on what level of involvement you'd like to have, and how much of the vision you share with us.
Beyond the reward of receiving the completed game, we believe that the ability to be a participant in the development, plus the chance to compete for further rewards makes this a unique opportunity.
Where does the funding go?
By now you must understand that this project is about MUCH more than building a new PONG app, which may only cost a few thousand dollars. We're looking to fund a community.
After the initial kickstart, the business should fund itself. But an endeavor this size takes a lot of start-up money. If we hit or surpass the goal, the funds will be spent first on completing and maintaining the new App-Different community website (which is highly complex and will cost a lot to develop and maintain), delivering rewards to our backers, stocking up on contributor awards and prizes, completion of the first game, advertising, and then beginning work on other community developed apps.
The more attention the community receives, the bigger the community gets, the better the games we can develop and the better rewards we can offer.
Is this whole idea crazy?
Probably. But some of the best ideas seemed crazy at the beginning. We think we've got a hook here with Apple TV and AirMotion™, but the community will not be limited to games only. We’re open to just about anything. Educational, Utilities, Music, you name it! If it seems practical, worth the effort, and the community agrees, well...you just might see your idea become reality.
And as the community expands, we envision a full-feature site where people can exchange ideas and information, bits of code, etc. Where anyone can post their own development projects, help each other to reach their goals, and share in the proceeds.
As with all great endeavors, there is the risk of failure. We truly feel this idea is unique and could be the beginning of something great. The website design has been laid out. We've obtained the provisional patent and trademark for AirMotion™. We've also trademarked App-Different™, and KING PONG™. We’ve got the framework completed for our first game, and a couple more ideas on table. We've got really talented contractors lined up and with you on board, we’ll be ready to roll.
There are some great people on our team who have sacrificed their time and energy to make this happen. They've done so because they believe in this concept, and they believe in you.
So here it is, community: Your first opportunity to vote your opinion. You are either going to love the idea, make a pledge, and help make this a huge success, or you’ll hate it and laugh us right off of Kickstarter. We’re prepared for either, but we’ve got faith in you. So let us leave you with one last thought:
Five years from now, when your friends are all playing games on their new Apple televisions, you'll remember this opportunity at Kickstarter. Will you be telling them how you had a part in it? Or will you be talking about another opportunity that passed you by?
