About

Join Our Adventure!

Ling Xi puts you in the middle of an exciting and true mystery about lost treasure, villainous ghosts, and love.

You are woven into the very fabric of this three episode adventure. We use your secured information to customize the story for you on your iPad. Packaged as a graphic novel, you'll find yourself in the mix of characters that include reality TV producers, deadly ghosts, and a street magician searching for his missing father and a lost treasure valued in the billions.

The adventure doesn't just stop when you finish the first episode; the app continues to provide you with valuable, personalized clues.

In between the episodes, you'll get texts, Facebook posts, and even cryptic phone calls from both the living and the dead. You'll find clues in surprising places. You’ll use these clues to influence the outcome with real world feedback. Your reactions and input to the clues change the story. Episodes two and three are based on your involvement.

No two people will see the same story. And, if you've invited your friends to this mystery, their involvement will change the story too.

No matter what level of personalization you choose, Ling Xi will surprise you. It may even scare you. It is a ghost story, after all.

Ling Xi is a real mystery adventure looking for an answer. Will you have it?

How was the truth lost?

Ling Xi is the true story of a talented street magician from Beijing.  His father disappeared in San Francisco while following clues that were leading him to the return of art stolen from China in 1860. Ling Xi followed these same clues, hoping they would lead him to his father, and he instead he found his destiny.

Buried beneath a building in San Francisco lies a fortune in beautiful Qing dynasty relics.  Guarding these are three murderous ghosts.

When I met Ling Xi in 2003, he had just set out in his search and already he knew that evil spirits were involved.

In 2003 I was the executive producer of The Invisible Tourists. We were in San Francisco shooting the pilot and I had put the crew up at the Jullian Hotel on Bush St. It was the end of the second day of shooting in Union Square and we were in the hotel lobby drinking the complementary two buck chuck, when a young Asian who had joined us started doing magic tricks. We were astounded.

This was Líng Xì. As the evening went on some of us went out for drinks and it was then that he told us an amazing story. His father was a famous historian from Beijing who had disappeared in San Francisco. He had been searching for treasure stolen from China in 1860, and had traced it to the Monticello Inn on Ellis St. Líng Xì told us that he thought that evil spirits had done away with his father. They had killed him to keep their secrets and now Líng Xì thought they were out to get him as well.

Well, I can’t tell you that we believed him, but it made a great story. We finished the shoot 3 days later and all went our separate ways.

Since then, almost half of my cast and crew have been plagued by supernatural events. I’m in the back row in the salmon colored shirt. On the right, this young lady has seen a dead woman playing the piano in her parents living room. On the bottom left is Michael Holt. He has disappeared. The girl in front of me, also gone. The tall girl left of me has seen and heard things in the middle of the night. It goes on. I have been plagued relentlessly. Run off the road by a mysterious vehicle. Personal things vanish. Faces appear in the dark.

Four years later I saw Líng Xì again. I was at the Magic Castle on Halloween in 2007 and Líng Xì was performing. He looked awful. He was still a fantastic showman, but he looked thirty years older.

We sat and compared notes and he told me how he had defeated some ghosts, but the treasure was still there and more evil than he could face. He spoke about making a deal to save his fathers soul.  By this time I was a believer, these same ghosts having been after me. We agreed to meet again later that week, but he never showed. That was the last time that I saw Líng Xì.

Beijing

In 2009 I was in Beijing for another project.  It was here that Líng Xì’s twin sister, Líng Bì, agreed to meet with me and it’s from her that I heard the final clues.

Your Challenge

No one has seen Ling Xi or his father in 5 years.  Are they ghosts now? Are they buried with the Qing Dynasty Treasure?  Have Triad gangsters forced them to surrender their secrets and thrown their bodies into the San Francisco Bay?

Somewhere in the Ling Xi adventure is the answer.

Experience the Episodes, put together the clues, influence the outcome and the end of your story could be the truth.

Publish your ending and compare it to other solutions.

About the treasure.

If it's there, and Ling Xi's father was correct, the value must be incredible.

Maps:

The Qing treasure is cursed.

Knowing that the treasure is under 127 Ellis doesn’t bother the ghosts.  You’d have to tear down the building to get it, and that’s not going to happen.  Or, you can know about the underground passages that predate the 1906 earthquake.

Lao Lings notebooks have maps of these passages.

Artwork

No project as glorious as this doesn’t create some beautiful art. All of the original art is very limited with the unsold pieces going to comic stores and galleries.

Pencil drawings:

    • Panels need pencil drawings before the can be inked, colored and animated. $50 gets you the panel drawing of your choice. Assuming you’re first in line or want one no one else ahead of you has chosen.
    • The step after panel drawings is making the animation drawings for the novels unique action sequences. $100 is all it takes to grab up one of these beauties. These are individually unique, as each action sequence requires different numbers of cells. More of that first come BS, so get in line early.

How about some of the bigger drawings?

    • Jeff Allen has made some beautiful pencil sketches of the characters as they were being designed. These $100 originals are not used in the novel, but form the basis of all of the other art.

Work Product:

Just like the art, a production this size also makes a lot of work product, so the artists, producers programmers and other creatives can work together.Things like Scripts, Story boards, Production notebooks, and the Producers iPad. These are all behind the scenes objects, the kind that you find on ebay when someone’s student loans are way overdue.

    • People are issued scripts to work from initially, and all of the dialogue, music cues, and scene sequences come from these.
    • After the production I’m gathering up every ones copy to get into your hands. Usually people write production notes in theirs.

$50 is all it takes to get a script. Thirty five are going out to cast and crew, so if it matters to you who’s script you get, jump in now so you can choose. I’ll even have the artist or cast member, or crew autograph your copy.

$250 buys a complete unmarked and new storyboard in a binder. The binder is autographed by the cast and crew. Only 3 will be available for each Episode. So choose your favorite Episode, put this on your coffee table and impress your friends with your great taste.

$850 will put you in the finished art.  One of our fabulous artists will put your likeness on one of the recurring characters.

Production Fraternity

How would you like to get deeper into the Ling Xi experience?

    • Come to Comic Con with us to introduce the novel.
    • Bring a date to the Wrap Party at the Magic Castle. The plan is to have this event after the final Episode is released.

$1500 brings you a job. Become a working associate producer.

Use your talent to help out the production. Get an ideation animation email, be listed in the contacts and help with marketing, or music, or whatever your talents can help. We still have to cast several roles. Do you know about haunting? You’ve got a job!

Happy producer, Daniel Reyes.

Legal mumbo jumbo:

I think that the State of California and all reasonable people would appreciate it if I told you that any representations made with regard to ghosts, hauntings, treasure, buried or otherwise may have no basis in reality and have not been substantiated by any authority, not even Scully and Mulder. You have to take it on faith, like nutritional supplements. In other words; the entertainment value may far surpass the veracity value.
