Physical Books

Posted by Chris Booker (Creator)

I've been having a little look, with some help - at printing costs for physical books.  I think the best way to handle this would be by means of an 'add on' amount rather than pledge tiers, as many people have selected various different levels and I'd hate for it to become confusing.

So, much like the Elite campaign - to order a physical add on - use 'manage my pledge' and add the relevant amount to your pledge without altering the reward level.  When the funding ends, I'll be contacting people to find out what they want to do with any extra pledge money I don't already know.

Having looked at some printing websites that offer short run book production (and of course Royal Mail!), I think the following prices should cover the costs of doing it:

+£12 = Paperback & Delivery (Signed for) to the UK

+£14 = Paperback & Delivery (Standard Airmail) to EU, Eastern Europe & Russia

+£18 = Paperback & Delivery (Standard Airmail) to the USA & rest of the world.

I'll look into the cost and possibility of producing a hardback, or even book posters - although we might need to do these things post Kickstarter.

Also @cs - I'll be doing the shipping myself, so if you want multiple copies, we could send them as one parcel. I don't know how much that would be and can't work it out till we know what the book looks like (and weighs) but it will almost certainly work out cheaper than shipping 7 separate parcels.

I'm not well versed in the ways of CreateSpace yet, but there is an option to sell from Amazon USA I think too, I don't think it costs (not sure) but just involves some form filling. So your wish should be granted but I won't know for definite until later!

I love physical books, but £18 x 7 books is just too much overhead for me to have them shipped.

As you are doing print on demand, it might be prudent to use a US service for the US backers; thus saving on shipping.

@Marko If we can do the amazon print on demand / kindle thing then we will....

@Stoo And yes, everyone still gets the ebook as well.

@Viking :-) I think I meant the European continent... probably!

@Paula It is going to be a book - professionally printed and bound and very book like. The cost decreases with however many we print in one go; 50 would be good and mean the price is about right for it.

Norway is not in the EU so we are in the £18 group then, along with Iceland, Lichtenstein and Switzerland? :P

As long as it's a proper book, not A4 or magazine size, but a recognisable book-shaped object then ok, I'll manage my pledge.

Chris, this is great. But would I still get the ebook as well? Would be handy to swap between ;)

Any chance of an Amazon (or other service) print-on-demand books for later purchases?
