Author Introductions: Chonty
Merry Christmas Eve Eve! I hope everyone is feeling festive and has been stocking up on liquor/wines for the holidays. I'm also reliably informed that food is only 2.6 credits per tonne on Lave, but you'll no doubt save big by holding off on the textiles until at least boxing day.
Welcome to our new backers, hello, and enjoy the ride. We're at Saturn but it would be nice if we could reach the asteroid belt over the next few days and then it's just a steady cruise back to Earth in time to re-deploy the pledge money to Elite: Dangerous.
In the meantime, I have another author to introduce; known only as Chonty:
Tell us a little bit about yourself?
I’m 39 years old, working in finance. Originally from the UK, now living in Germany, married with 3 children (6, 4, and 2) - none of them have ever heard of ‘Elite’ (including my wife).
When did you first discover the Elite games?
Christmas 1984 (28 years ago, when I was 11 years old!) - I received Elite as a Christmas present, from my parents (BBC B, cassette version).
What's your favourite Elite memory?
Reading the ‘Dark Wheel’ novel, and then being able to become part of the story, trading all manner of goods, with my very own Cobra Mk III ship (and unlimited lives, to practice, after multiple deaths at the hands of Thargoids, and occasionally also space station docking bays).
Have you written before or is this a fresh challenge? What made you back the project?
I’ve done a fair amount of writing for work (not the sort of writing that will deliver an Elite:Dangerous book, however). I’m also the proud owner of a blog (but again, not what you would call sci-fi).
Nevertheless, I’m a fan of sci-fi fiction, sci-fi films, etc. and I’ve been waiting for a chance like this for some time.
Do you know what you want to write a story about?
Yes, and no. I’m looking forward to the holidays to nail it down. In the meantime I’ve got numerous ideas floating around that might, or might not form part of the story - they include, of course, Thargoids, and exploration, uncertainty, surprise, and discovery. Oh, and Thargoids.
What one thing most excites you about Elite: Dangerous? Something that's already been revealed or some feature you're secretly hoping for?
Revenge, pure and simple. Those Thargoids ain’t gonna know what hit them this time ‘round. That, and the chance to re-live the Elite experience - I’m loving the nostalgia created by the E:D KS Comments thread.
