Author Introductions: Fred Burbidge
Here is another Q&A from one of our Author contributors, Fred Burbidge. I also did a couple of minor updates to the main story page to try and entice people to come and pledge £6 for a copy of this book, and reduced the price of the cover illustrator tier a little bit.
Please do what you can to spread the word! Facebook, Twitter, writers forums, sci-fi sites - everything helps get this across the line and made!
Anyway, here is Fred.
Tell us a little bit about yourself?
Hello! I'm a 28-year-old art shop assistant, I have a videogames collection roughly the size of a modest shed and love Babylon 5, Judge Dredd, and Doctor Who.
When did you first discover the Elite games?
I'd heard about them for many years, and coveted Elite on the NES as a terminally broke 6-year-old. It was only when I finally got my first PC and internet access that I finally got to indulge in Frontier: Elite 2 thanks to the wonders of second hand shops. While a little long in the tooth by then (I arrived to the franchise nigh on 6 years late), it still had a lot of charm and depth and was a whole lot of fun (at least when my horrendous piloting skills weren't crashing space ships into pretty much anything directly in front of me).
The Elite games sparked my interest in space games in general, particularly the X series and Freelancer.
What's your favourite Elite memory?
Finally getting enough money and crew together to pilot an Imperial Courier. Once I'd bought it I couldn't get it off the ground without crew and ended up having to wait days (in-game) before any were available for recruitment. Totally worth it, though: once I'd kitted it out with a 20MW beam laser I was pretty much unstoppable from there on. Awesome.
Have you written before or is this a fresh challenge? What made you back the project?
While I've written for fun before, I've never written with the intention of being published. I backed the project for two reasons: firstly to read the book, of course, and secondly to mark the first time I've plucked up the courage to properly throw my hat in the ring and write for an audience that isn't in the single figures. It's time I put all this practice to work.
Do you know what you want to write a story about?
Currently sat in my head is an idea involving a salvage ship crew discovering something strange and unpleasant while they're pulling in debris from a space battle. It's early days yet, though, so some idle musings may throw up a better idea before I get to work.
What one thing most excites you about Elite: Dangerous? Something that's already been revealed or some feature you're secretly hoping for?
Finally being able to play Elite multiplayer is going to be fantastic. As for unannounced stuff, I'd love to see a lot more of the Thargoids and other alien species.
