Hi, my name is Greg Luzniak, and I’m here on Kickstarter to tell you about my first children’s book, Three Goats Gruff.
Three Goats Gruff is a retelling of the classic tale of The Three Billy Goats Gruff. It was a story that I loved when I was a little kid, and now that I have a kid of my own, I found myself reading the story to him, and he loves it too.
As I read the book, I would change the story a little bit. Since my wife, my son and I are a family of three, the story transformed into a family of three goats. A kid goat Gruff, a Momma goat Gruff, and a big Daddy goat Gruff.
The goats in the Three Goats Gruff are based upon the Alpine Ibex, a type of mountain goat.
About a year ago, I was watching a show on the Discovery Channel on the Alpine Ibex, and they had two males butting heads, crashing their massive horns against each other…
It was really quite impressive, and at this point I thought to myself, “This mountain goat, this Ibex, can definitely take out a troll.”
It has always been a dream of mine, to create, write, and illustrate my own story books, and while my son was only three I thought there’s no better time for me to do a Children’s book, and Three Goats Gruff started to take shape.
All the art, for Three Goats Gruff, begins with a pencil sketch.
It then becomes a tight pencil drawing on Bristol board.
I then ink over the pencils and scan the inked art into the computer.
From there I take it into Adobe Photoshop CS5, where I add additional inks and the digital colors.
Then the lettering and a few polish passes, and our page is finished :)
Some of the original art will be available at certain pledge levels.
Three Goats Gruff will be a hard cover, signed and numbered edition with a limited print run of 1,000. The book will roughly measure 11”w x 9”h. The book will be printed in full color, with a very solid paper stock (100#) for the interior pages, a black stamped linen hard cover, with an embossed wrap-around sleeve. Of course, all this good stuff costs money, and the quotes I got back from the printer are close to $9,000. I set the Kickstarter Funding Goal for Three Goats Gruff at $7,500. If the Funding is acheived, the money will go directly into the printing costs to help alleviate the huge out of pocket expense.
So I’m here on Kickstarter asking for your pledge, to help with the costs of printing Three Goats Gruff. With your help, this book will become a reality.
Thank you so much for your generous support!
