METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA is the first science-fiction role playing game. Originally released in 1976 by TSR (publishers of Dungeons & Dragons), it is now in its fourth edition, and is the predecessor of Gamma World and other science-fiction RPGs. The original 1976 edition of METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA is considered by many to be among the most important RPGs of all time. As Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons & Dragons, wrote in the book “Hobby Games: The 100 Best”:

“Furthermore it blends fantasy with weird and super science in a unique manner that is captivating to players with imaginations suited to such a startling mixture. METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA – in any edition – stimulates the imagination, encourages keen thinking, and breaks the mold of typical fantasy and science fiction roleplaying games. If that doesn’t make it one of the best hobby games ever, I don’t know what would.”

In 2001, the rights to METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA reverted to creator James M. Ward. Mr. Ward has authorized Goodman Games to publish a single printing of the METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA Collector’s Edition. This deluxe oversized hardcover will reproduce the original 1976 printing verbatim. This Kickstarter also allows for the production of new material by Mr. Ward and other METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA designers, including new monsters and NPCs, and several new adventures. The hardcover will also include a collection of the many magazine articles published in support of the original edition since 1976, a series of introductory and historical articles, an interview with Mr. Ward, period reviews of the original publication, consolidated tables for ease of reference by the game master, and a brief errata for the original printing.

In the interest of ensuring a timely release, this Kickstarter has been launched after the completion of most content. All text content is complete:  not just the original 1976 content and the magazine articles, but Mr. Ward's new NPCs and monsters, the new adventures, the introductions, and all new articles. Editing and layout have already begun. This Kickstarter will fund completion of art, which will commence immediately upon the Kickstarter's conclusion, and the very expensive print run.

Finally, this collector’s edition will feature the very first publication ever of Mr. Ward’s original notes from the first pre-publication playtest session of METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA ever conducted with Gary Gygax and Bryan Blume of TSR Hobbies in Lake Geneva, WI. These playtest notes provide a window into history as they reveal the origins of the game and the early rough draft approach of Mr. Ward, who would go on to become one of the industry’s senior designers.

Gamers, this Kickstarter is your chance to own a copy of gaming history, and share it with friends and family. Original copies of METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA sell for hundreds of dollars at auction. This edition brings the original material to your game table in a prestigious legacy format, and presents the material in a manner facilitating ease of play. This edition is designed not just to own, but to play!

What is METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA?

METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA is a science-fiction tabletop role playing game in which the players are passengers on the interstellar colony ship Warden. Struck by radiation, the ship’s occupants have mutated into unusual and deadly creatures. After several generations, they have little or no knowledge of how to use the technology around them. Now tribal barbarians, they struggle to survive amidst a backdrop of advanced technology, mutant monsters, and the vast spaces on an intergalactic colony ship.

METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA spawned the popular GAMMA WORLD role playing games. When first published in 1976, METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA received rave reviews. From The Space Gamer #10, Feb-Mar 1977:

“The rules are logical, simple, and straight-forward. Each section of rules is well-outlined and usually followed by a detailed example of play… Overall, the facets of MA’s makeup are superb. The game is definitely first rate and quite excellent. MA is highly recommended to someone interested in buying their first role-playing game since the rules are rich with guidelines to help the player in constructing his own ship.”

Restoring A Classic

When METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA was first published in 1976, the printing process was very different from what it is today. There were no digital files. Interior text was “taped up” and physically reproduced on a printing press, and color art was reproduced via film negatives called separations. Reprinting a work from 1976, in its original publication format, poses certain challenges. How has Goodman Games addressed these?

The interior text for the deluxe collector’s edition has been scanned directly from a first printing of the original game, acquired at some expense by Goodman Games. Care has been made to preserve this original artifact through the scanning process. The scanning process uses a technique called backlight reduction to maintain a white background on the page, which prevents “shadow text” on the other side of the paper from showing through. Finally, each page has been digitally reviewed, square inch by square inch, to remove imperfections resulting from scanning a 38-year-old document.

The original 1976 METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA cover art
The original 1976 METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA cover art

The original art for the 1976 cover design is lost. What remains are printed rulebooks, all of them worn by age: sun-bleaching, scuff marks, creases, tears, and worn edges are common to even the best known examples of the first printing. To address this, Goodman Games has utilized the latest technology in digital restoration, more commonly used in the restoration of antique photographs. The best available printed copy of the original cover edition has been scanned on a Cruse Synchron table scanner. This high-resolution scanner occupies an entire room and weighs nearly a ton. It is the same model used by the Vatican Secret Archives, the Beethoven Museum in Germany, and the Pentagon, and scans using a number of techniques simply not available on conventional scanners. The end result is a color-synchronized image reproduced at nearly three times the resolution at which conventional offset printing presses can print. This scanned image has been meticulously restored via digital techniques, square inch by square inch, to remove edge wear, creases, scuffing, and other physical evidence of age. The final result is the best reproduction of the original METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA cover since the original publication. Even if you do not like the original cover art (which, we admit, requires a certain affection for quirky 1970’s sci-fi), you will appreciate the quality of the restoration.

The Magazine Articles

Unlike modern role playing games, METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA was not published as a core rulebook followed by a string of sourcebooks. It was published as a single saddle-stitched (staple-bound) 8.5”x11” rulebook, and all official supplemental material was published via magazine articles (primarily in The Dragon but also, to a lesser extent, in Dungeoneer and other venues). For fans of the original game, this presents a costly and challenging collecting landscape. Not only must the fan locate a hard-to-find game published 38 years ago, but the fan must also locate multiple issues of several magazines, each of them also 30+ years old.

When the rights to METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA reverted to Mr. Ward, so too did the original magazine articles. This deluxe collector’s edition will also include a number of articles originally published in The Dragon, as well as some from other publications. The articles have been selected based on the value of their content for the gamer seeking to run adventures under the original 1976 rules set. The articles are newly typeset, including newly commissioned illustrations.

The Art

Goodman Games is well known for the old-school art aesthetic in its publications, as expressed in works like Dungeon Crawl Classics Role Playing Game and The Dungeon Alphabet. Goodman Games brings that same aesthetic to METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA Collector’s Edition. The original art from the 1976 publication is included for historical reference, but beyond that, all art in this publication is newly commissioned. TSR legend Jim Holloway has agreed to provide more than 20 all-new illustrations. Fan favorites Peter Mullen and Stefan Poag, known for their work in Dungeon Crawl Classics adventure modules, have agreed to provide full-page chapter starts. And the versatile Doug Kovacs, whose cover art for Dungeon Crawl Classics modules has brought continued accolades, has agreed to provide a new rendering of the deck plans for The Warden. These deck plans will be produced using the same techniques Doug uses for his DCC RPG maps, which have been repeatedly hailed as the best maps in the industry today. In addition, Doug will provide maps and cover art for the new adventures we will produce.

New Material

Goodman Games is a strong advocate of gaming through play. Collecting is good; collecting and playing is better. To facilitate additional play of METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA, especially among fans who have less time to game than they did in 1976, Goodman Games will use this Kickstarter to fund a series of adventure modules for METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA. These adventures will be produced to the same very high standards as our Dungeon Crawl Classics adventure modules. They will be stand-alone, self-sufficient, and ready to play “out of the box,” allowing the game master to drop them into any METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA campaign. The intent of these new adventure publications is to jump-start your own home group with a very easy approach to new play.

A total of three new adventure modules will be produced, each of them expected to be from 12-20 pages in print. (These three are in addition to “The Android Underlords,” the special adventure released at Gary Con 2014 when this Kickstarter was announced.) All will be written using the original 1976 rules. One of the new adventures is a set of drop-in encounters, written by METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA creator James M. Ward, with his unique perspective on the game’s original vision and evolution. A second adventure is written by Michael Curtis, known for his work on Dungeon Crawl Classics adventure modules, as well as Stonehell Dungeon and The Dungeon Alphabet. A third adventure is written by Jobe Bittman, whose adventure The One Who Watches From Below won the Goodman Games Mystery Map Adventure Design Competition in 2012.

The adventures will be released over the course of a year, providing ongoing support to the play of METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA. A new adventure will be released quarterly in PDF format to Kickstarter subscribers, with a final print compilation delivered at the end.

In addition, the deluxe hardcover edition will include new METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA supplemental material by James M. Ward, Michael Curtis, and Jobe Bittman. Mr. Ward has created a compilation of mutant and human NPCs, as well as new creatures, to populate your adventures. He has also written a new introductory adventure that can be used to launch any METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA campaign. Through the process of playtesting their new adventures, all three authors have created a variety of new material suitable for home play, ranging from minor new rules to significant additions (like a new variety of command ring), all of which are included in supplemental material throughout the deluxe hardcover and new adventures. The hardcover will also include pages suitable for photocopying as a home-use game master's screen. Finally, the hardcover will also include Michael Curtis’ optional rules on unusual appearances for mutants, as well as his article offering advice to modern game masters attempting to instill a classic 1970’s feel into their sessions.

The Introductions

METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA is important as a game. It is also important as an icon of gaming history. Like the progenitor of a family clan, its traits can be identified in decades of subsequent gaming history. In order to place the game within its proper context, this deluxe hardcover includes several introductory articles with various perspectives. Tim Kask, original editor of The Dragon and the very first employee of TSR, recounts his experiences as an early playtester of METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA with Gary Gygax and others. Jon Peterson, author of the popular D&D history Playing At The World, provides a scholarly perspective on METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA and its early development. Marv Breig, active member in the OD&D community and longtime MA fan, interviews James M. Ward regarding his early days at TSR, the development of MA, his own gaming experiences, and many other subjects. The collective perspectives provided by these introductory articles will broaden the reader’s experience in actually playing the game.

Why Kickstarter?

Goodman Games has more than a decade of history producing quality RPG supplements. Why use Kickstarter for the METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA Collector’s Edition?

First, Kickstarter lets us test interest in a deluxe oversized hardcover format. METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA is a classic, and we’d like to present this classic in a prestigious legacy format that can be played and passed through generations of gamers. Traditional hardcover formats are impressive, but Goodman Games would like to go even further: we would like to publish METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA Collector’s Edition as an oversized hardcover. Our goal is a printed page size of 10.5” wide x 14” tall. This impressive format is durable, heavy, prestigious, and, frankly, awesome. Our intent is to print the book using Smythe-sewn binding, the same kind of durable sewn-in binding used in college textbooks. Smythe-sewn books can withstand constant use but are much more expensive then the “regular” hardcover gaming books you own, most of which use a glue-based binding (which tends to dry and crack over time). Additionally, we plan to use an extra-heavy paper stock. Our Dungeon Crawl Classics Role Playing Game modules already utilize a paper stock that is heavy enough that you can’t see the ink on the opposite side of the page under normal indoor lighting conditions. For METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA Collector’s Edition, we would like to utilize an even heavier paper stock than we currently use in DCC modules. METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA has already endured as a favorite game for 38 years. We’d like to publish a book whose paper and binding can last another 38 years.

What do you mean, "oversized hardcover"? THIS is what we mean! Here is the mockup that was shown off at Gary Con 2014, with a copy of MA 1st printing in front of it. Yes, "oversized" is big! Note: This is only a mockup; final cover design may vary.
What do you mean, "oversized hardcover"? THIS is what we mean! Here is the mockup that was shown off at Gary Con 2014, with a copy of MA 1st printing in front of it. Yes, "oversized" is big! Note: This is only a mockup; final cover design may vary.

The large format also provides a benefit in how we present the material. Our goal is to reprint the original pages at approximately 10% larger than their 1976 publication. The 1976 edition used a small font size. 10% sounds like a minor adjustment but it is just enough to make the original text easier to read, without making a noticeable change in the presentation. The oversized pages also provide an excellent format for reproducing the various short magazine articles which originally supported METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA. And finally, the larger pages are an outstanding canvas for the new illustrations we have commissioned.

Of course, producing the material in this deluxe oversized format is very expensive. And this leads to another reason to use Kickstarter: we’d like to go even further on the deluxe spectrum. We’d like to offer a gold foil cover variant on the collector’s edition. And a slipcover. And even a leatherbound edition. All of these are expensive. Provided the Kickstarter funds, they will be options.

And finally, Kickstarter lets us make a splash. We believe there are thousands of dormant METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA fans out there with fond memories of their past games. Now is your chance to find each other! Join this Kickstarter, become part of the METAMORPHOSIS ALPHA community, and let your future adventures on the starship Warden take flight.

FAQ

Is this Kickstarter affiliated with MA 5E / Signalfire Studios? No, this Kickstarter is unrelated to other Metamorphosis Alpha Kickstarters. Goodman Games has licensed the rights to publish MA 1E and is not involved in the 5E project in any way. It is not possible to transfer a pledge from the MA 5E project to this project, or vice versa, as they are being produced by unrelated companies.

Shipping & handling: Shipping and handling charges will be invoiced at the end of the Kickstarter. This allows us to give you the best price for your order. For USA orders, we will provide an option for media mail shipping (approximately $10-12) or priority mail (approximately $20-22). Because this is an oversized hardcover, shipping charges will be higher than for a traditional hardcover book. International orders will be invoiced at actual postage cost plus $5 for handling. International postage requires hand-written customs forms, and waiting in line at a post office. International postage also has long transit times, and depending on the destination can be very expensive. If you are unsure how expensive international shipping can be, please ask us for an estimate. Depending on which items are ordered, we anticipate international shipping to be in the $25-$40 range for Canada, and $35-$60 range for other international destinations.

Risks and challenges

Goodman Games has been publishing role playing game products since 2001. The majority of the material for this project is already completed. The primary risk is if there are delays in the layout / printing phase, which means a primary risk of delay rather than completion.

FAQ

  • At the end of the Kickstarter we will send out a survey. It will ask for "the usual information" such as your mailing address. It will also include a form where you can input information on any add-on items. (There are several "standard" add-ons, so there will be yes/no questions for those, and then an open comments field where you can indicate any unusual requests.)

    Last updated:
  • Our goal is to consolidate items into one shipment, as much as possible. The only item that will not be available for consolidated shipping is the compilation of the three subscription modules. That compilation will be available early next year, while all other items (main book, dice bags, poster, etc.) will be available in approximately August/September. We will consolidate all items except the module compilation into one shipment, to save on shipping costs.
