About this project
Dungeon Crawl Classics Role Playing Game (DCC RPG) is a tabletop RPG that combines an old-school aesthetic with modern rules. Less than two years after launch, it is in its third printing and exploding in popularity.
In 2013, Goodman Games launched the DCC World Tour. The DCC RPG creative team ran games at cons around the country, and fans were given free swag to support events at local stores and cons. The swag included mechanical pencils, buttons, bookmarks, and badge ribbons – free for any game run at a store, con, school, or other public place! Judges who ran multiple games continued to rack up prizes: a T-shirt at 3 games, an iron-on at 5 games, a brass belt buckle at 7 games, and a super-secret prize at 9 games.
Now it’s 2014, and Goodman Games is running this Kickstarter to expand the World Tour program. This Kickstarter adds new swag items: more buttons, stickers, patches, paper pads, spiral notebooks, graph paper, sticky pads, shot glasses, posters, beer cozies, trucker caps, another T-shirt, another brass belt buckle, and even custom folding chairs and 5’ tall character cutouts. We’re offering stretch goals that include bumper stickers, pads of character sheets, and – hold on to your moustache – a 2’x3’ blacklight-sensitive velvet poster of the DCC RPG logo. And with sufficient funding, the Band will attend local cons for solo performances, or potentially show up to run a game at your house. Rock on!
Why pay for swag when it was free last year? First, if this Kickstarter funds, the swag will still be free for events run as part of the World Tour. A small contribution up front for this Kickstarter can get you free swag when you run games for the rest of the year. Second, this Kickstarter will get you swag if you’re not part of the World Tour. Some gamers aren’t able to run games at stores or cons, for a variety of reasons, and this is their chance to grab some swag. Third, the best items in the World Tour are reserved for the judges who run awesome events for us. This Kickstarter also allows an option for players to pick up some of the same swag.
Minimum manufacturing runs: Swag is expensive, and most items come from traditional manufacturing with minimum print runs. Many gamers are now used to print-on-demand…but that’s not how it works with brass belt buckles and custom-printed trucker caps. For many items in this Kickstarter, it costs nearly the same to print 100 as it does to print 1,000. This Kickstarter is about funding the minimum manufacturing runs to get swag produced.
The more you buy, the more you save: Because of the minimum runs involved, successful funding of this Kickstarter means we’ll have a lot of swag. A lot. We’ve built the pledges to pass on some of the economies of scale. Therefore, the pledge tiers have an “individual” tier and a “gaming group” tier. We encourage groups to go in together to share in the savings.
Special items: Some individual items are so cool, we can’t resist including them. Things like a custom-printed super-plush DCC RPG folding chair for your game room. Or a 5’ tall cardboard cutout of Hugh the Barbarian. Yeah! These items are expensive so they are presented as individual add-on pledges.
Who can participate? This Kickstarter is open to everyone. While the World Tour will still focus on games open to the public, this Kickstarter gives everyone a chance to pick up swag. This Kickstarter is for you if you are an international customer, an online gamer, or someone without the time to run public games. This Kickstarter is for you if you have a big gaming group and can never seem to get enough swag. This Kickstarter is for you if you’re a DCC collector and want to “have it all.” And this Kickstarter is for you if you’re just a big fan of DCC RPG who wants to show your support!
Retailers: The World Tour is all about judges running public game sessions at local stores, cons, and schools. If you would like to have someone run a DCC RPG session at your store, contact us! The judge will bring lots of swag to pass on to your customers.
Pledge levels: The chart below shows the contents of each level, with the details as described below.
Here is the list of available swag for this Kickstarter. The pledge amounts, and what you get for each pledge level, are below.

Premium Swag Items
Custom folding chairs and character standups are classy game room accoutrements available for individual purchase.
Custom-printed 3” foam folding chair: For the ultimate in game room awesomeness, this black folding chair has iconic DCC RPG imagery printed on the back and seat. The foam is an ultra-comfortable 3” deep. Compare to normal folding chairs at 5/8” thick. You can game for hours in this chair!
Character standup display: This 5’ tall display is a cardboard cutout of Hugh the Barbarian or Shana Dahaka. Like the movie star cutouts you see at the movie theater! Perfect for your game room.
DCC RPG third printing: What? You don’t own the game yet? Why have you read this far? But wait, we have a solution! BUY THE BOOK!
The Band: The next level of swag is games with the Band. Join Joseph, Doug, Harley, Mike or Dieter in various forums to help further the World Tour!
Fearless New Judge (6 available): 1-hour online session (chat or Skype-equivalent) of Q&A with Joseph, Doug, Harley, or Mike. Ask whatever questions you want – rules, game style, whatever.
Blood in the Water (4 available): A 3-hour online play session with Harley or Mike. Have your PC killed by a famous adventure author!
Villain of the Band (2 available): You or a single character of your choosing are The Bad Guy. We will include the name and likeness of your choosing as a villain, monster, or NPC in an upcoming adventure, with an associated appearance in an illustration (where you will most likely be killed off). This pledge also includes all the individual swag levels. The fine print: note that this pledge does not include the original art. It is the “appearance and naming rights” associated with at least 1 image and 1 character in one module. Allow up to 12 months for image to be properly placed in an upcoming adventure, illustrated, and then published.
Open For the Band (4 available): Pledge for a Goodman Games exhibitor badge at Gen Con, with special privileges. You can join us behind the booth for the last-minute scramble before Thursday opening. This pledge level includes 1 copy of all Gen Con new releases, including specials. (Hmm, wonder what those might be?) And of course you’ll literally be the first customer at Gen Con so you get first dibs on the whole booth. You are welcome to hang out behind the booth at any point in the con, including the Total Madness of the opening hours, when we usually get mobbed. You’ll get to meet everyone involved in the booth, and we’ll invite you along to some planning sessions, team meals, and other similar events. This pledge also includes all the individual swag levels. The fine print: “Behind the booth” is usually cramped quarters. We’ll often be busy with customers but can stop to chat in the lulls (mid-day Friday and Sunday are usually slow times that are good for hanging out). This pledge requires absolute secrecy, and signing an NDA, regarding product plans discussed at the planning sessions.
Album Cover (2 available): A caricature of your choosing joins the Band, battles with them in an adventure, makes an appearance on the “We’re with The Band” image in a module, and is subsequently killed off in a future module (preferably in a horrific method by a gory monster). You can choose whether the caricature is yourself, a character, or someone else. This pledge also includes all the individual swag levels. The fine print: note that this pledge does not include the original art. It is only the “appearance rights” associated with at least 3 images. Allow up to 12 months for images to be properly placed in upcoming adventures, illustrated, and then published.
Solo Album, USA or International (7 available): A member of the Band (Joseph, Doug, Harley, Dieter, or Mike) will fly to your house to game for the weekend! We can run DCC RPG sessions or play anything else you have in mind. The weekend will be Epic and memorialized in future adventures – as much as possible, we will provide playtests and previews of upcoming material. This pledge also includes all the individual swag levels. The fine print: at least 16 hours of gaming over 2 day period. We will make every effort to accommodate the request as quickly but realistically we must ask for up to a 12 month window to schedule a time amenable to all parties (allow up to 18 months for international destinations, where visa applications may be necessary). Available in continental US and Canada for USA pledge level, or Europe or South America with international pledge level. Depending on logistics of visiting international locations, we reserve the right to apply additional cost for expensive / hard-to-reach locations – please query regarding visiting specific international locations.
I Brought The Band (2 available): The ultimate house party. At least 3 of the Band (Joseph, Doug, Harley, Mike, or Dieter) – and possibly more, depending on logistics – will visit your home to game for the weekend. We’ll obviously play a lot of DCC RPG but the Band also plays other games if you’re interested. (Ask Joe and Doug about Puerto Rico and Star Wars Miniatures!) This pledge also includes all the group swag levels. The fine print: At least 16 hours of gaming over 2 day period. Available only in continental USA. We will make every effort to accommodate the request quickly but realistically we must ask for up to a 18 month window to schedule a time amenable to all parties.
A Ride on The Wizard Van (10 available): If this Kickstarter funds, we will add the option for a new tier, A Ride on the Wizard Van. (This tier is currently unavailable since the Kickstarter has not yet funded.) See the stretch goals for more info on the Wizard Van. This $10,000 tier will help us hit that level quickly! This tier funds a ride on the Wizard Van as it embarks on a multi-month tour to visit game stores and cons around the nation. The tour will include your house, and your choice of game store or con in your metro area. The Wizard Van will arrive at your house with one copy of every Goodman Games product released in 2013 and 2014. When the Wizard Van arrives at your home, at least 1 member of The Band will be on board, there to game with you for a weekend. You are then welcome to join the Band in the Wizard Van as it blazes on its holy quest to bring the dogma of DCC RPG to the world. Future DCC RPG modules will include your likeness as a member of the Band, to subsequently be killed and replaced, and your name as an NPC or monster name (as in the Album Cover and Villain of the Band tiers above). The Wizard Van’s summer gaming tour will never truly end, as legends of the Wizard Van are told and retold through generations of gamers. If you help fund the Wizard Van, you ARE a level 20 gamer, and the kingdom shall be yours. Note: Joseph gets to pick the music in the van, not Doug. That one right is reserved. The fine print: USA pledges only. Buying and retrofitting a van is not fast. We will make every effort to complete quickly, but please allow up to 24 months for arrival of the Wizard Van and publication of various products. This pledge tier funds the Wizard Van and includes you as a key part of the experience, but the van itself remains the property of Goodman Games as a key marketing asset. This pledge also includes all the group swag levels. Please note that our goal is to retrofit a 1970’s van, but we have to work with existing inventory on retro vans, which aren’t always available commercially. The final van will be 1970’s in “look” but may be later in manufacturing date depending on availability. Finally, please note that this pledge level isn’t relevant if the wizard van stretch tier doesn’t fund. In the event that does not happen, you will be given an option for a refund or to convert a portion of this pledge into another pledge tier.
The Stretch Goals
These are some fun ideas we’d like to throw in if the Kickstarter goes well.
Bumper sticker: With the DCC RPG logo reading, “My boss is a gongfarmer.” (Thanks for the suggestion, Mike Curtis. – Joseph, your boss.) This will be the first stretch goal. When the Kickstarter funds, we will evaluate the mix of pledges and announce the stretch level.
More sheets on the 0-level character sheet pad: The pad of 0-level character sheets initially has 25 sheets per pad. We’d like to add more sheets to the pad – this gives you the chance to kill off even more characters! This will be the second stretch goal. When the Kickstarter meets its first stretch goal, we will evaluate the mix of pledges and announce the stretch level.
Custom character sheet pads: 7 additional pads of character sheets, one per class. This will be the third stretch goal. When the Kickstarter meets its second stretch goal, we will evaluate the mix of pledges and announce the stretch level.
Awesome black velvet blacklight-sensitive poster: The perfect accessory for your 1970’s gaming den, this 23”x35” poster is printed on black velvet. It features the DCC RPG demon skull logo in blacklight-sensitive print. Just like the one you had in college! Put on some tunes, break out the bong, and play some DCC RPG. Wait, did we really say that? No bong. No bong. This will be the fourth stretch goal. When the Kickstarter meets its third stretch goal, we will evaluate the mix of pledges and announce the stretch level.
The World Tour Program Guide: To commemorate all the awesome games of 2014, we’ll publish a 2014 World Tour Program Guide after the 2014 tour ends. This will include photographs and game recaps from any tour participants who want to send them in, as well as a World Tour DCC RPG adventure and some other new content. This will be the fifth stretch goal. When the Kickstarter meets its fourth stretch goal, we will evaluate the mix of pledges and announce the stretch level. The fine print: The 2014 World Tour obviously has to end before we can produce this book. Delivery is anticipated in the first half of 2015.
The Wizard Van (to be added as $75,000 stretch goal after initial funding is complete): The World Tour is planned to build through the years and eventually reach Epic Proportions. To that end, we have added The Awesomest Tier Ever: The Wizard Van. You heard right. If the Kickstarter hits $75,000, this stretch goal funds Goodman Games purchasing a 1970’s van, retrofitting the engine, refurbishing the interior into the ultimate mobile gaming lounge, painting some awesome wizard art on the exterior, and then embarking on a World Tour. Plush sofas, game table, captain’s chairs, bubble windows, and an 8-track player will await your gaming pleasure. The van’s exterior will be custom-painted by Doug Kovacs himself, complete with a new wizard image on the side (potentially to be reprinted on a future book cover). The world has never known the awesomeness that will be carried by this van from city to city as it rolls forth upon the landscape of gaming. The Wizard Van will subsequently embark on a multi-month tour to visit game stores and cons around the nation. If you pledge for a ride on the Wizard Van, the tour will include your house, and your choice of game store or con in your metro area. See the Ride on the Wizard Van pledge for more information. The fine print: Buying and retrofitting a van is not fast. We will make every effort to complete quickly, but please allow up to 24 months for arrival of the Wizard Van and publication of various products. This pledge tier funds the Wizard Van, but the van itself remains the property of Goodman Games as a key marketing asset. Please note that our goal is to retrofit a 1970’s van, but we have to work with existing inventory on retro vans, which aren’t always available commercially. The final van will be 1970’s in “look” but may be later in manufacturing date depending on availability.
If I run a World Tour game, do I still get free stuff? Yes! The purpose of this Kickstarter is to gauge interest in an expanded assortment of swag items. If this Kickstarter succeeds, then your World Tour games later in the year may come with even more, varied swag.
If I can get this swag free with the World Tour, why pay for this Kickstarter? If this Kickstarter funds, the menu of swag options with the World Tour will greatly expand. The Kickstarter also allows you get more DCC swag options for your home group, in a way we weren’t able to offer previously. For example, it’s hard to justify offering shot glasses and beer cozies for games run publicly at game stores! But we can provide DCC shot glasses with this Kickstarter. Items that are not suitable for World Tour games will be offered from the Goodman Games web site after the Kickstarter.
Add-On Items: If you pledge any "gaming group" level that includes shot glasses, beer cozies, or T-shirts, you can add on additional items. Each additional beer cozy is $2, each additional shot glass is $3, and each additional T-shirt is $20. Simply add the amount on to your pledge and indicate your request in the comments. Please note that these add-on items are available only for "gaming group" pledge levels that already include the indicated items.
Shipping & handling: Shipping and handling charges will be invoiced at the end of the Kickstarter. This allows us to give you the best price for your order. Depending on the size of your order, we will use flat-rate priority mail envelopes wherever possible in order to speed up the shipping process. Current flat-rate envelopes are $5.80 for small boxes, $12.35 for medium boxes, and $17.45 for large boxes. Domestic shipping charges will be invoiced at actual postage cost plus $2 for handling. International orders will be invoiced at actual postage cost plus $5 for handling. International postage requires hand-written customs forms, and waiting in line at a post office. International postage also has long transit times, and depending on the destination can be very expensive. If you are unsure how expensive international shipping can be, please ask us for an estimate.
Risks and challenges
Goodman Games has been in business since 2001, and has published more than 200 books. We've released more than 80 titles in the Dungeon Crawl Classics line of adventure modules, and have already succeeded in running the 2013 World Tour. The primary risk associated with this project is in vendor fulfillment, if a particular vendor cannot supply a product (such as mechanical pencils or posters). Typically there are other vendors available for such supplies, and the consequence will be nothing more than a delay.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
