This Kickstarter funds the creation of a Dungeon Crawl Classics adventure module with a Christmas theme, which includes special scratch-off character sheets for play. Yes, just like the lottery! The adventure is thematically tied to the holiday season and is the perfect adventure to play over your holiday break! The character sheets tie into a specific mechanic described in the adventure, and will enhance the play experience significantly as the players “discover” their characters and recover lost memories by scratching off the appropriate squares.
The adventure module is 24 pages long, written by Marc Bruner with cover art and maps by Doug Kovacs, and interior illustrations by Cliff Kurowski, Doug Kovacs, and Stefan Poag. The module's page size is 8.5"x11". Each module includes 6 loose-leaf scratch-off character sheets, also measuring 8.5"x11", illustrated by Stefan Poag.
This Kickstarter runs for about two weeks centered around Black Friday. We are prepared to ship several hundred orders in time for Christmas arrival to US addresses, with the balance arriving after Christmas. International orders will be shipped at the same time but we can’t guarantee their Christmas arrival (sorry international guys).
The Story Behind This Project
Each year, Goodman Games publishes a DCC adventure with a holiday theme. These are the perfect adventures to read or play during the Christmas season. (You can purchase prior-year adventures from our online store.)
This year we’re doing the same, with a twist. We love to do fun, unique things with our adventures. Over the past year we have experimented with scratch-off applications, including a fun scratch-off convention game called The Dungeon of Nocyrag that was released at Gary Con 2016. The Dungeon of Nocyrag was our “proof of concept” and initial foray into printing scratch-off products.
For this year’s holiday adventure, author Marc Bruner had an intriguing idea whereby the characters forget who they are, and have to re-discover their identities. (This ties into the plot of the adventure, which you’ll discover when you read it!) After discussing many ways for this to work, we realized the scratch-off application would be perfect.
Throughout the course of the adventure, characters make certain checks to “remember” the identity or abilities of their characters. As they make such checks, they can scratch off the appropriate box on the sheet and discover what their character knows – or does not!
There are dozens of characters randomized under the scratch-off boxes. No two groups will get the same characters, and every adventure will be slightly different. The players will have all the usual fun of a DCC module, enhanced by the fun new mechanic of the scratch-off character sheet.
What about replay value? Don’t worry, we have you covered! The scratch-off character sheets are one-use-only, but the PDF of the adventure also includes a table where you can randomly assign 10 pre-gen characters to your players. So even after you’ve used up the character sheets, you have the ability to utilize the “character memory” aspect of the adventure. Or you can play the adventure without this aspect, as well – it works either way.
You can also use the adventure for ongoing campaign play, if you choose. The “discover-your-character” aspect is optional, not mandatory for the plot. Finally, as an added bonus, the character sheets have been designed in such a way that they can be used independently of the module itself!
The Production Process
The specialized process for the character sheets requires coordination between two printing companies. We have already printed advance copies of the scratch-off sheets, which you can see photographs of here. We’ve already worked out all the kinks on the scratch-off aspect, and the production of the adventure module itself is something we have done 100+ times before.
This adventure is being printed domestically, and we are confident about a Christmas delivery time frame. The adventure is already written, edited, illustrated, and laid out. Some example pages and illustrations are provided here.
The Adventure Itself
Twilight of the Solstice is a level 4 DCC RPG adventure by Marc Bruner.
A conflict at the end of time! On the eve of the winter solstice, long-banished giants from the frozen void strive to complete a ceremony that will cause an endless winter to envelope the world. The adventurers find themselves torn from existence, stripped of not only their equipment, but their very memories, and summoned to the far edge of the world to repair an ancient temple of time. Will you recover your abilities and solve the challenges of the world clock before the end of time itself?
An exploration-based adventure taking the characters deep into the icy depths of the unknown, Twilight of the Solstice tests the players ability to confront the challenges of the harsh winter setting while also unraveling the singular puzzle of their own identity. Faced with limited knowledge and time, only the most crafty - and lucky - can hope to defeat the returned agents of primeval chaos and restore events to their proper course!
The highly specialized nature of this project involved some pre-commitments to the printer, so we have limited the number of print rewards to 600 copies. If you guys surprise us with extraordinary demand we will try to accommodate, but for now the project is bounded with these pledge levels:
- The basic pledge is $15 for a print and PDF copy of the adventure module, along with 6 printed scratch-off character sheets. If you order at this level, you select the appropriate pledge level to ship via bulk mail or priority mail. See below for more information.
- There are a limited number of $20 pledges that include an additional pack of character sheets (for a total of 12). These are available only in the US and will ship via priority mail.
- Finally, there is a $7 option for a PDF edition of “just the adventure.” In this case you don’t get the beautiful scratch-off character sheets!
Retailers, we have set aside some copies for distributors. Please contact your distributor and you should be able to get a copy through them!
Pledges to Ship In Time for Christmas
If there’s a hard-to-satisfy gamer in your life, this is the perfect gift! We’ve done some prep work to ensure we can ship up to 400 copies of the book to US backers to arrive in time for Christmas, 200 of which have a set of extra character sheets. Select the “priority shipping” pledge for this option. The shipping cost is $9 for priority mail, there are a limited number of these pledges, and this option is only available for US backers.
The “regular shipping” pledge is also $15, with a lesser shipping charge. US orders at this level ship via bulk mail at a cost of $5. Bulk mail takes 1-3 weeks to arrive (versus a few days for priority mail). It may still arrive in time for Christmas but we can’t guarantee it. All international orders ship under this pledge level via air mail at a higher cost that varies by country.
We don’t anticipate any stretch goals for this Kickstarter. This is a fun, small project to fill a very specific need. You didn’t even know you had this need until you read this far, did you? But you do have this need. You NEED a scratch-off character sheet and adventure to play over Christmas break!
Marc Bruner is the author of Twilight of the Solstice. Marc was introduced to DCC RPG by a friend shortly after the game came out and has been running games ever since. This is his first DCC published adventure.
Doug Kovacs painted the cover for Twilight of the Solstice, and also illustrated the maps and several interior images. Doug is the primary visual influence on DCC RPG. He painted the cover art for DCC RPG and for most of the published adventure modules, including this one. His maps have set a new standard for fantasy cartography.
And that’s it!
We’re excited for you to check out this awesome project, and we hope you are too! If you have any questions, just ask!
Risks and challenges
Goodman Games has produced 100+ adventure modules, including one prior scratch-off product. The primary risk we anticipate is the possibility of delays at the printer.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
