Summary of Kickstarter:

  • Funding level supports hardcover publication of Age of Cthulhu 8: Starfall Over the Plateau of Leng, by Jon Hook. Written for Call of Cthulhu, Sixth Edition, it's the longest AOC module yet, at 64 pages of pure terror!
  • You can support this goal by pledging for the adventure itself, as well as adding on other Age of Cthulhu adventure modules, which are on sale for 25% off as part of this Kickstarter.
  • Every pledge automatically receives a free PDF edition of one other Age of Cthulhu adventure of their choice. Learn about the whole line!
  • Stretch goals will make this adventure experience even more exciting, and include props, a booklet of illustrated player handouts, printing updates (such as a sewn-in bookmark and slipcase), and even inclusion of another short scenario!

Update 6/22: With less than two hours to go we have passed stretch goal #4! The book of handouts will now be expanded to include at least 10 new handouts!

Update 6/20: Great news: we have passed another stretch goal! The project will now include not just Starfall Over the Plateau of Leng, but three additional mini-scenarios: The Gang's All HereRisen is the Moon, and Transatlantic Terror. This is in addition to the extra 12-page insert of the handouts and pregenerated characters, the perforated tear-out sheets of business card props for the pregens, and the additional NPCs for adventures in and around Eureka Springs! And this is all in addition to the free scenery from Fat Dragon Games. This sounds like a pretty good deal for a $25 pledge! Next up is stretch goal #4 at $10,000, which is another 10 pages of new handouts!

Age of Cthulhu is an officially licensed line of adventure modules published by Goodman Games for Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu role playing game. Set around the globe and torn from the pages of the hidden history of the world, Age of Cthulhu adventures bring new secrets and mind-bending horrors to your 1920s Call of Cthulhu game. Each adventure comes with copious player handouts, detailed maps, and pre-generated investigators ready to risk their lives and their sanity to confront the horrors of an uncaring universe.

This Kickstarter seeks to publish Age of Cthulhu 8: Starfall Over the Pleateau of Leng in a durable hardcover format. Starfall Over the Plateau of Leng is the longest AOC module yet, with 64 pages of terrifying adventure compatible with Call of Cthulhu, Sixth Edition. A durable hardcover format gives this book great display value on your shelf. It also allows us to make use of the endsheets as expanded venues for additional art and player handouts. Finally, we have several stretch goals to expand the player experience: props, a book of handouts, and more!

Starfall Over the Pleateau of Leng

An investigation into the whereabouts of a missing artist becomes a manhunt for her suspected murderer. The trail leads to the impossible, deep into the mystical realm of sleep, The Dreamlands. The investigators must journey to the very heart of the Plateau of Leng, to the fabled Pharos of Leng, if they are to find their quarry, but it may all be for naught, as a giant falling star threatens to destroy both The Waking World and The Dreamlands.

This classic 1920s jazz era Age of Cthulhu scenario takes the investigators from the hustle and bustle of Arkham, Massachusetts, to the beautiful and peaceful forested highlands of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and beyond to the frigid climate of the Plateau of Leng. In this scenario, the investigators are members of the International Historical & Archaeological Society (IHAS). The IHAS is a global order of scholars, historians, and philanthropists who share a common interest in the documentation, preservation, and study of history.

Starfall Over the Plateau of Leng features weird science, extra-dimensional travel, mysterious Dreamland locales, nightmarish denizens, and a falling star that could destroy two worlds. Depending on what clues the investigators follow, there are multiple ways to access The Dreamlands; and in one playtest three different methods were used! Starfall Over the Plateau of Leng provides multiple avenues of investigation and multiple means for investigators to advance through the scenario.

The author, Jon Hook, is a fan of Dreamlands fiction by H. P. Lovecraft and other authors in the 'Lovecraft Circle.' Jon says, “The Age of Cthulhu line of adventures is all about globe-trotting, and the unspeakable horrors that hide in every corner of the earth. So I thought a natural extension to that would also be travel to The Dreamlands. I wanted to write a scenario that required the investigators to travel to The Dreamlands so they could experience that side of horror too.”

Stretch Goals

Update 6/22: With less than two hours to go we have passed stretch goal #4! The book of handouts will now be expanded to include at least 10 new handouts!

Update 6/20: Great news: we have passed another stretch goal! The project will now include not just Starfall Over the Plateau of Leng, but three additional mini-scenarios: The Gang's All Here, Risen is the Moon, and Transatlantic Terror.

We are excited to make this most ambitious Age of Cthulhu project yet! Our goal is to produce a play experience, not just a book. The core hardback already includes an outstanding adventure with many great maps, illustrations, and player handouts. In addition we have these stretch goals:

Stretch goal #1 at $5,000: FUNDED! The adventure will be printed with a perforated tear-out sheet of business cards for the members of the International Historical and Archaeological Society. These business cards correspond to the pregenerated characters and will help the players get into the role of their characters.

Stretch goal #2 at $6,000: FUNDED! The adventure will be printed with an additional 12-page insert of the handouts and pregenerated characters (slipped inside the cover or shrink-wrapped with the book). This allows you to hand the pregens to your players to get started immediately, while also giving us the opportunity to print some of the handouts in a larger format.

Bonus goal at $7,000: FUNDED! Author Jon Hook will write another mini-adventure called The Gang's All Here, set in Eureka Springs. Read about it in our latest update!

Stretch goal #3 at $8,000: FUNDED! The adventure will be printed with an additional Age of Cthulhu mini-adventure, Transatlantic Terror, which works as a natural interlude in any session requiring transatlantic travel.

Stretch goal #4 at $10,000: FUNDED! The 12-page insert will be expanded with at least 10 pages of new illustrations and handouts, providing an even more immersive experience for your players.

Stretch goal #5 at $12,000: The hardcover will be printed with a sewn-in satin bookmark, and a 'black book' dust jacket – ominous, unearthly, and suitable for keeping the adventure title a secret from your players…

Stretch goal #6 at $13,000: All orders of the hardcover will include 6 stickers of The Yellow Sign. Stick ‘em wherever you want!

Stretch goal #7 at $15,000: The player handout insert (now 22 pages with stretch goal #4) will be expanded with another 10 pages of new illustrations and handouts, providing an even more immersive experience for your players.

Stretch goal #8 at $17,000: The hardcover will be printed in an attractive full-color slipcase for beautiful display on your bookshelf.

Stretch goal #9 and beyond: Let’s get there and we’ll find out!

Add-On Items

Goodman Games has been publishing Age of Cthulhu adventures for more than five years, and as part of this Kickstarter we are holding a 25%-off sale on prior volumes of the existing line!

To help this Kickstarter fund the highest level of stretch goals we encourage you to add on to your pledge. Simply add on the funds for any of the following Age of Cthulhu items, and at the end of the Kickstarter we will send out a survey where you can specify what the additional funds are for.

Each volume listed below is priced as indicated, at approximately 25% off (rounded to the nearest dollar). You can pledge to add on for PDF only or for print+PDF. For print+PDF, the PDF is free and the discount is applied only to the print cost. All print copies will be bundled in one shipment at the end for most economical shipping.

The Age of Cthulhu Line

Age of Cthulhu adventures include many of the classic elements of Call of Cthulhu: action, investigation, and a forbidding sense of horror. Though the adventures utilize real locations and historical events, Age of Cthulhu is first and foremost dedicated to exploring the horrors of the Cthulhu Mythos, and to bringing the excitement of heroic pulp-themed adventure to your gaming table. So dim the lights, draw your trusty sidearm, and prepare to venture into the unknown…

This is the eighth adventure in the Age of Cthulhu line. The line has been in production for nearly five years, and a strong team of authors, editor, and artists has continued to build a solid reputation for Age of Cthulhu. Backers of this Kickstarter will also receive a PDF of another Age of Cthulhu adventure of their choice, and can pledge to add on hardcover copy of prior adventure modules at a special 25% discount!

About the Team

AOC8: Starfall over the Pleateau of Leng is written by Jon Hook and edited by Matthew “Pookie” Pook, with interior illustrations by Brad McDevitt, cover art by Eddie Sharam, cartography by Tom Martin, and layout by Jessica McDevitt. Fans of the line will recognize many of these names from other recent AOC modules.

About the Author: Jon Hook is unassuming and quiet; he’s the wallflower in a room full of extroverts. He’s exactly the kind of man who is secretly a cultist plotting to unmake the world. Jon discovered the literary works of Howard Phillips Lovecraft through Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu role-playing game. Jon was introduced to the game after one of his childhood friends purchased the first edition box set of the game back in the summer of 1982, and Jon’s been insane ever since.

For years, Jon designed Call of Cthulhu game scenarios for his local gaming group, until he decided to enter Chaosium’s Call of Cthulhu Halloween Adventure Contest in 2009. Jon’s scenario, “The Faculty Party,” was one of the winning entries. With his courage bolstered, Jon continued to develop his writing skills, and his efforts were rewarded with his Call of Cthulhu scenarios published through Chaosium Inc., Golden Goblin Press, Yog-Sothoth.com, and Protodimension eZine.

Jon discovered Goodman Games’ Age of Cthulhu line of adventures as it was being launched with Age of Cthulhu vol. I: Death in Luxor. Jon really liked the production and format of the scenarios, and was inspired to see if he could add his voice to the fabric of scenarios that were being published in the Age of Cthulhu by Goodman Games. Jon took a shot in 2011, and 'cold call' submitted an idea for a scenario to publisher, Joseph Goodman. The gamble was successful, for Joseph Goodman was interested to develop and publish Jon’s idea, and in 2012 Age of Cthulhu vol. VII: The Timeless Sands of India was published.

When he’s not exploring the depths of madness, Jon and his wife of nearly twenty years, Kara, do their very best to raise their two young children, Coleman and Celia. Fans who’d like to actually hear Jon prattle on about H. P. Lovecraft and the Call of Cthulhu role-playing game are invited to listen to the Miskatonic University Podcast at www.mu-podcast.com, where he is one of the co-hosts of the show.

About the Editor: Matthew Pook is English. It is his task to make Spot Hidden rolls on an almost prodigious basis, ‘tut’ quietly to himself and shake his head, before politely suggesting to Jon Hook that he might like to re-work the scenario.

His first encounter with H.P. Lovecraft came in 1980 when he discovered a copy of At the Mountains of Madness, began reading it, and then put it back on the shelf again wondering what exactly it was all about. He was thirteen. It took the discovery of the Call of Cthulhu boxed set in 1984 to put him on the right track. Since then he has played more than a few scenarios and campaigns, read an awful lot of them, reviewed almost as many, and now gets to edit and proofread some of them. These began with the infamous Masks of Nyarlathotep Companion, and have continued with titles for Cubicle Seven Entertainment, Miskatonic River Press, Modiphius Entertainment, Sixtystone Press, and of course, Goodman Games, the latter including Age of Cthulhu vol. III: Shadows of Leningrad, Age of Cthulhu vol. IV: Horrors from Yuggoth, Age of Cthulhu vol. V: The Long Reach of Evil, Age of Cthulhu vol. VI: A Dream of Japan, Age of Cthulhu vol. VII: The Timeless Sands of India, and now, Age of Cthulhu vol. VIII: Starfall Over Plateau of Leng. (If you think that the last sentence needs editing, you now know what he has to put up with).

Matthew likes to review games. His reviews appear regularly in The Unspeakable Oath and at Reviews from R’lyeh. He lives with a ridiculously large games collection, an understanding perky Goth, and the requisite five cats. Only one of which is black. The other four are related.

About the Artist: Brad McDevitt, the artist for the interiors on Age of Cthulhu, has been a fan of H.P. Lovecraft’s writing since his teens, more years ago than he cares to talk about, when he read The Outsider in a book he borrowed from his freshman English teacher. He has been hooked ever since. Ironically, he had read through most of Lovecraft’s other stories before he was able to track down the actual Call of Cthulhu story itself… the wait was worth it.

Even being a fan, he did not know there was a role-playing game based on the Cthulhu Mythos until almost a decade later, at Bashcon in Toledo, Ohio. He has almost never had so much fun having a character get ripped limb from limb by an enraged Elder Thing, except for the time a Mi-Go sucked his character’s brain out, or the time he accidentally summoned Azathoth and was standing about five feet from the fiery Elder God when it manifested.

Working on Age of Cthulhu (and the occasional Chaosium Call of Cthulhu book) is very close to a dream come true. He gets to draw horribly mutilated corpses and nightmarish monsters on a regular basis and get paid for it. He would like to say he also likes to draw puppies, flowers, and fluffy bunnies, but his mommy told him never to tell a lie.

Brad loves to hear from his fans (assuming he has any) and may be reached at bkmcdevitt@yahoo.com. More of his work may be seen at www.bradleykmcdevitt.net , at Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bradley-K-McDevitt-Illustration), Tumblr (http://www.tumblr.com/blog/artmann100), and on Twitter (https://twitter.com/bkmcdevitt).

Shipping & Handling

Shipping and handling charges will be invoiced at the end of the Kickstarter. This allows us to give you the best price for your order. For USA orders, orders will be shipped via media mail at an expected cost of approximately $5-6, depending on final weight of product. International orders will be invoiced at actual postage cost plus $5 for handling. International postage requires hand-written customs forms, and waiting in line at a post office. International postage also has long transit times, and depending on the destination can be very expensive. If you are unsure how expensive international shipping can be, please ask us for an estimate.

Risks and challenges

This is the eighth book published by Goodman Games for the Age of Cthulhu line. Assuming funding is attained, we do not anticipate any challenges in publishing.
