What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

About

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Orion Driver Board is a FR4 2 layers PCB designed for high power LEDs drivers. With dimensions of only 130 x 60 mm it is fully compatible with future releases of ORION platform lights or can be used as stand-alone board in custom projects. This board was designed with main purpose of powering large number of individual LED channels in a small footprint and to provide maximum control and safety levels. Next to 6 CC LED drivers, Orion Driver Board provide a secondary 12V CV channel, a 5V or 3.5V CV (on your choice) together with a dedicated adjustable temperature dependent fan control circuit; Even more, a safety thermal switch come as option and will turn off all LED drivers if temperature reach certain high levels, but will allow the fan to work until temperature is brought back to safe range. On side B can be mounted 6 x SMD drop resistors (10k) so the LEDs to not be powered if there is no PWM signal to drivers. This avoids the common problem of having the LEDs go to 100% brightness when the controller is reset PWM-IN also have double row connectors (for IN-OUT configuration or bridging together multiple channels on same PWM-IN).

  • Accept all up to 6 MeanWell LDD-H drivers (including new LDD-1200H and LDD-1500H) and MeanWell LDD-1000L, LDD-1200L, LDD-1500L (sold separately)
  • 6 channels of dimming (max 14 LEDs/channel - 12 recommended due to voltage bins fluctuations)
  • Drives up to 84 3v LEDs up to 1500mA (45V available per channel) - CAUTION - Board max power is more than 375W - it is strongly recommended to keep total power at less 250W
  • Sockets provided for Meanwell LDD drivers allow for removal, upgrade and replacement (optional)
  • works with virtually any PWM controller (Arduino based DIY included)
  • Utilizes inexpensive 12V, 24V, 36V or 48V DC power supplies (not Included) - CAUTION - maximum LEDs / channel is limited by voltage of main power supply
  • Fully adjustable fan start-up temperature via a multi-turn trimmer
  • Powers up to two 12v Fan (no extra fan power supply needed!) temperature controlled + one output constant 12V
  • Powers controller / Arduino board (no extra power supply needed!)
  • Thermal safety shut-down of LEDs, but still keep fan running until safe temperature is achieved (optional)

 CONFIGURATIONS

  • CONFIGURATION A - in case your project uses passive cooling and don't need the fan control, then this configuration is what you need; Comes with pre-soldered 10k drop resistors, pin connectors for PWM-IN & LED-OUT and a terminal block for V-IN
  • CONFIGURATION B - as standard configuration used in Orion lights, on top of A configuration will add 24-36/12V converter, 5V DC/DC converter, temperature controlled fan output with adjustable trimmer (start temperature can be set by yourself), temperature sensor with 20 cm wires. Of course, everything already mounted and tested.
  • CONFIGURATION C - is identical with Configuration B, with only difference that board can be powered with 48-56V DC.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS:

  • complete the Orion X, Orion S and Barracuda X lighting platforms (use of the Orion Board) - those projects are almost finalized, now in tests/prototyping phase
  • develop a smaller version of Orion Board (3 channels only) to be used in future Barracuda S and Sapphire light platforms
  • develop the open-source Arduino based controller for all above lighting platforms (software at 50% development phase)
  • bring all the above platforms to IOT (not started)

Risks and challenges

I know from my professional experience that there are always some risks involved when manufacturing a new board, but for now prototypes are available and tests runs without issues.
