About

20" aluminum wall clock (blue LEDs, blue acrylic clock face, black case)
20" aluminum wall clock (blue LEDs, blue acrylic clock face, black case)

The Light Pipe Clock operates on the principle of light refraction using end-lit acrylic "light pipes" that conduct light and disperse it according to the refractive index between the light pipe and the painted substrate on the side of the light pipe. While the concept of using a "light pipe" as an indicator is not new, practically all applications have been limited to vehicle instrumentation, e.g. speedometer indicator. Another difference in the implementation of light pipes here is that the light pipes are made of round acrylic rod, whereas light pipes in other applications usually consist of square or rectangular rod. The round rod in effect becomes a magnifier and this produces a clean, crisp indicator. The pictures don't do justice. Really :-)

Also key to the operation of the clock is the use of conductive circuit boards and contacts that allow the hands to spin infinitely. The circuit boards and contacts are gold-plated for maximum conductivity and reliability. I personally designed the boards and have them made in small batches.

The concept of the clock was born roughly 30 years ago when, as a child, I became frustrated with being unable to read a standard digital LED clock without my glasses. The clock started as a side project and was continually shelved and resurrected. I finally decided to bring it to the forefront and seek financial support to enable me to bring it to market.

Risks and challenges

As with any design project involving a physical product there are risks related to the sourcing, supply and logistics of parts and materials.

To mitigate these risks I've already procured large quantities of raw materials such as the acrylic rod, LEDs and gold contacts. Regarding parts not yet acquired I've either lined up suppliers (spun aluminum housing, acrylic for clock face, circuit boards, clock movements) or I am currently researching them (power supplies).

Other risks related to manufacturing and delivering a physical product are labor, workspace and logistics related to packaging/shipping the end product. Currently I lease my own private makerspace. Depending on the level of funding I would either make the clocks myself or contract the work out (e.g. NextFab.com), or divide the manufacture between both. I've also secured warehouse space (in the same building my makerspace occupies) in an industrial park [that just happens to be] located in between a packaging manufacturer and the local U.S. Post Office.
