Snapzoom the universal iPhone and Android adapter turns ordinary binoculars into super telephoto lenses.

Aloha Kickstarter we are Daniel Fujikake and Mac Nguyen of HI Resolution Enterprises. We live and work in Honolulu, and our inspiration for Snapzoom was born of our passion for surfing and photography.

About a year ago we started using binoculars as a telephoto lens for our smartphones. We were amazed with the quality of the photos and videos, but connecting our phones with the scopes was pretty frustrating. We set out to find a simple solution and came up with Snapzoom the universal smartphone scope adapter.

What does Snapzoom do?

Snapzoom connects and aligns a smartphone camera with the eyepiece of an optical scope. The scope then becomes an accessory lens, and the smartphone camera’s image is magnified by the power of the scope. For example, the iPhone 5’s camera is equivalent to a 33mm lens field of view. Adding a Snapzoom and the average 10x power binocular increases the size of the image to a 330mm lens field of view.

What makes Snapzoom so awesome?

  • It’s totally universal! Snapzoom works with all major smartphones, with or without a case, and all single or dual eyepiece scopes, like binoculars, spotting scopes, telescopes, and microscopes.
  • Snapzoom turns your smartphone into an autofocusing scope viewfinder, which allows small children or groups of people to share the view.
  • Snapzoom locks your smartphone’s camera to the scope in the landscape position, so your videos will be easier to watch on larger screens.
  • Our patent pending design allows Snapzoom to be securely worn on a pair of binoculars during outdoor activities.
  • Snapzoom is simple to use, and it connects in seconds.

Why do I need a Snapzoom?

The versatility and convenience of Smartphone cameras have changed the world of photography forever. The only limitation is their slim profile, which restricts them to a fixed focal length lens. Snapzoom liberates your smartphone by utilizing the high quality optics in your binoculars to maximize the reach of your smartphone's camera, and get you closer to the action.

Most adapters on the market are made by optical scope companies, exclusively for their products, and are limited to use with a single phone model.

Other "universal" adapters are quite complicated and include several attachments for the different eyecup sizes, and you must use their specific model phone case to connect to the eyepiece.

Snapzoom is the only universal adapter that makes long-distance smartphone photography fun and affordable for everyone.

Why we need your help?

We have finished with our design phase, and have lined up qualified manufacturers in the US and overseas to insure a quality product at a fair price.

The biggest cost involved with the manufacturing of Snapzoom, is the creation of the injection molds. Snapzoom functions simply, but its parts are complex, and the molds to make them are incredibly expensive.

We are asking for your support to fund the initial costs of creating the injection molds, and to buy hardware in larger quantities. With your help, we can begin production, and start shipping Snapzooms to backers as early as August 2013.

Please spread the word and share our project with your friends, and thank you for checking out Snapzoom!

Note: Snapzoom is patent pending, and will retail for $74.95 (phones and scopes are not included). iPhone, Apple, and Apple logo are registered trademarks of Apple Inc. Samsung, and Galaxy s3 are a registered trademark of Samsung Corporation.

Snapzoom in the news!

TUAW- “Rather than fitting inexpensive optics to the iPhone, Snapzoom can take advantage of quality binoculars or scopes that you already own.”

DP Review- “Snapzoom offers sample images….that look interesting enough to make us want to put the device through our own thorough testing."

PetaPixel- “...attach a slew of optical scopes (i.e. binoculars, telescopes, etc.) to your smartphone in lieu of a telephoto lens.”

Cult of Mac- “Why buy some dumb iPhone telephoto lens when you could just drop $70 on an adapter that weds your iPhone with a pair of binoculars.”

The Phoblographer- “I really didn’t expect much out of the project until I saw some example footage of some video shot through everyday Nikon binoculars.”

Engadget- “the smartphone adapter for binoculars, telescopes and microscopes is up for grabs on Kickstarter to let you zoom in on the moon, bacteria or whatever else you can think of.”

Gizmag - “While it’s true that you could just hold the lens of your phone up to one eyepiece of the binoculars, the Snapzoom allows users to set the phone to the optimum position and then keep it there”

Cnet- “If you've always wanted a pair of HD digital binoculars, you could very well get some without shelling out the big bucks.”

The Mac Observer- “Your photos benefit from the optics in your binoculars and other long distance viewing tools, and lets you use the gear you already have as a telephoto lens.”

Tech Crunch- “you could miss opportunities to capture great moments, especially when you’re missing out on the great optical zoom available on some more expensive or specialized dedicated camera devices. That’s what Snapzoom hopes to fix with its binocular mount for smartphone cameras, and the best part is that it’s completely universal”

New Stretch Goals!

Thank you all for your awesome suggestions!

If we make it to $85,000, every Snapzoom starting from the $45 pledge level will include a storage pouch, and simple screen shade.

If we make it to $90,000, every Snapzoom starting from the $45 pledge level will include the storage pouch, screen shade, and a tripod adapter!

If we make it to $95,000, every Snapzoom starting from the $45 pledge level will include the storage pouch, screen shade, tripod mount and a counter weight accessory! (The counter weight helps keep the Snapzoom balanced in the landscape position while mounted on single eyecup scopes)

If we make it to $100,000 every Snapzoom from $45 pledge level will include all the accessories listed above, and you’ll able to choose from two new colors, Pink and Camouflage.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

We have tried to minimize our risk by sourcing duplicate manufacturers both in the US and overseas, for all of Snapzooms custom parts. Because we want your Snapzoom to last we are using quality Stainless steel and brass hardware, and durable nylon for the molded parts.

We have thoroughly tested our design over the past few months, and are certain Snapzoom is ready to take your photography to the next level.

If our project becomes highly successful there is a possibility that the expected deliver times would need to be extended. If this happens we’ll deliver Snapzoom rewards in the order that they were placed, with the early backers and early adopter rewards having priority in the delivery schedule.

FAQ

  • Yes it will, and everything will look amazing on that huge screen! Snapzoom can accommodate all major smartphones, with or without a case, with a width up to 4in. (10cm), and a .80in. (2cm) depth.

  • Yes, we are working on it, and will try hard to make it apart of the final design.

  • We would love to say yes to this one, but in it's current form, it's not possible. Another problem we've encountered using larger tablets, is that in some cases they can act like a sail and significantly increase camera shake.

    Last updated:
  • We haven't tested it on one yet, but unfortunately we don't think it would. The grip of scope mount arms are not designed to withstand the force of the recoil. We will test it to see if it would work for just observation. UPDATE: We went to B&H in NYC today and got to test the snapzoom on a ZEISS rifle scope, and it definitely does not work.
