"This is science fiction. The Artefact is incredibly well thought out from scientific, ecological, socialogical and evolutionary standpoints." Rob Lang The Free RPG Blog
"I really think, that if you like sci-fi games, this game has something different to offer." Richard Lorio II Rogue Games
"I really like the level of detail Emmet put into the design of the setting – I guess I am a sucker for planet-building civilizations (Ringworld, Rama, Banks Orbitals, GIMME)." Nils from Enderra
Why a Kickstarter?
We have a game already, why does The Artifact need money? The majority of money that does not go to fufilling the rewards will be going to paying artists. We've taken the art as far as we can. The need now is to get professionals involved to really polish the look of the game and have a book that will knock some socks off. Any remaining money if any will be going to pay for editing and layout professionals.

Join humanity as it reaches out to the stars in desperation for a new home. There isn't time to terraform a new planet. Our only option is The Artifact a strange manufactured world, far larger than Earth but it's been designed for humans to live on it. In fact humans are already living there and have been as long as their history records.
Join the Artifact Study Organization (ASO), the Indo-China Alliance (I-CA), fortune seeking corporations and Earth's new ally the Scimrahn as they fight for survival against the mighty Kelrath and the Chezbah technocracy.
There are a bunch of talented artists that we're putting to work with a successful kickstarter. These guys are the big reason for the Kickstarter. I've done what I can do to communicate the look of the game but they will greatly improve the look of the game and the quality of the art.

A long and glorious history
Sixteen years ago The Artifact was created with the question, what would a manufactured world look like? What would you find there? How can we make a world like that interesting and exciting? We started out with some basics and created three factions struggling for dominance. Over the years, the structure of the planet came into sharper and sharper focus. We had to explain to players what things on this world were made of, what people eat and how they live their lives.
We made a system that we worked hard to keep consistent, rules applied everywhere instead of special case rules. Early on a mechanic that allowed characters to get a mastery of their skills but still be challenged came into use called the Fraction Column. Simply, these are fractions of the character's attributes that allow for better roll results.
Over the years, players poked holes in the system and we patched them ad hoc. It worked but then a revelation flashed before us and an updated more coherent ruleset emerged. New tools made playing survival scenes fun and made things like fixing a teleporter pad that were complicated, simpler and more enjoyable.
The Artifact is and will be a free game. When this Kicstarter is successful The Artifact 3rd edition will get a Creative Commons license. What's more the PDF will be available for free. So why support a game that's free? Mainly for the rewards, maybe you'd like a nice softcover book, maybe you'd like a full color book? Maybe you'd like your name on the back of every book and PDF? Maybe you want to put your company name on the book as it will grow into a megacorp by the year 2085? That's for you to choose but no matter what you choose, we'll be grateful for your support.
One Beefy Book
We're not sure what the page count will be when this edition is done but the text by itself is at 200 pages. There's already hundreds of pictures for the book and pages of maps. The majority of the Kickstarter funds will go to commissioning even more artwork by some really talented artists including new cover art.
Pie In the Sky
I'll already be having a great time getting the book together and making a awesome playing and great looking game but if something extraordinary were to happen, like we raise more than the goal, we might just be able to do a full print run. If that happens, there is plenty of additional material that needs to be updated to the new rules and I'll set stretch goals for each new book being added to the rewards, maybe as a PDF, maybe as softcover books dependent on what I can accomplish with the pledges. Let's see how things turn out and I'll keep you updated.
First Stretch Goal: $6,500 - The Player's Handbook
I was of the opinion that I should wait to post a stretch goal until we got closer to the main goal. Apparently that's not how it's done (what do I know, I'm new to this). So for the first stretch goal, I will include a rebuilt Player's Handbook with new cover art and updated content. The Player's Handbook is a treasure trove of information about the world intended for the players to dig into describing the world in depth. It also contains more tricks and tools for Comm Officers and then rest is absolutely packed with more toys for the players in terms of equipment. You'll get the PDF at the $10 donation level, a softcover at the $25 level and up and a color softcover at the $80 and up level.
If you're still curious about Emmett O'Brian, he's 36 years old and started playing RPGs with Star Frontiers somewhere around 1985. He liked it but thought he could do even better (at 11! oh the hubris!) and started designing RPGs and kept playing them. Other major influences were Robotech, Battletech, Cyberpunk and d6 Star Wars. At a young age his mind was inexorably warped by Star Wars, Starblazers and the Robotech series.
Who Is Store32?
We have one "face" to our group and that is Emmett, there are others that are contributing behind the scenes. A lot of it is just by playtesting but some of our playtesters also like to dip their toe into world building or stress testing the rules. We challenge each other's conceptions and spend countless hours discussing what flavors of pie are popular in the Kelrath City of Penalon. None of us get paid for this, we just really like RPGs and we really like The Artifact. Yes, someone is probably going to put us in the nice comfy white jackets again if we keep this up.
Kicking it Forward
I'm relatively new to Kickstarter but I want to support the projects here. My problem is I keep finding the ones I really like after they're already funded. To be sure I'll be tracking down those projects and buying from them. But! I also want to kick it forward, so 5% of profits will be invested in more projects down the line. I'll just have to do a better job keeping my eyes pealed.
