Right up front this is what we are trying to accomplish: A Pay What You Can Recording Studio at Dreamship Community.
Now here are the "ands" and "ifs," or "why's" and "buts!"
DREAMSHIP COMMUNITY is a collective of individuals, a sober space, and a safe space clear of oppressive behaviors. We are an inter-generational house full of families and diversity, artists and dreams. We host open mics, workshops, music and rock shows, poetry readings, one act plays, and pancake breakfasts. Anything to bring a community of friendly folk closer together to learn from one another.
"PAY WHAT YOU CAN": this phrase confuses some people, but it means exactly what it says. To be a part of this community, to use the services of this studio, you donate the amount of money you can afford given your means and financial situation. An honest and open conversation is had with the client about what they can spend, and what services a contractor can provide, and a middle ground is met. Even if a client has nothing, we find a way to work with them because art should not be confined to those who are wealthy. You may be asked to volunteer at Dreamship, or help promote, or any number of things.
The idea for this project comes from my own personal experience of recording bands for years (and being recorded myself) both in and out of pro audio environments. There is a huge gap between the "we just formed a band and need a demo" level and the "I am an established artist ready to go into a real studio environment with a producer and record a full length album." There are very few options for entry level artists to produce examples of their work to shop around and get gigs, and thus they end up spending thousands of dollars to record a CD when they have not had a chance to learn about their own chemistry within their project yet.
We hope to provide an alternative, stepping stone option for entry level musicians, artists, and poets as well as folks who just do not have much money. Please consider donating! Incentives for this include recording time and a thank you song including all the contributors!
We are setting the bar at $1000. This just barely gets the room built, with a secondary goal of $2000 we could soundproof it, get additional recording gear and more! Please share this as much and as often as possible and donate if you can!
Risks and challenges
There are very few risks once we get funded, one of them being constructing the actual room. However, Dreamship is a community of 11 amazing individuals, many of who have construction experience. We also have several folks interested in donating time. There is already a whole community waiting for this to happen, and we would love you to be a part of it! We already have some microphones and interfaces donated, and will use extra money to buy even better gear for the studio!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
