About

Hello, my name is Annie Basulto, I am the grandniece of Pedro Telleria. The Pedro Telleria Project is about the journey of my discoveries of Cuban-born musician and composer Pedro Telleria.

A few years ago my father, Kenneth Basulto, presented me with some items his uncle Pedro left behind after his passing in 1973.  His documents contained hundreds of newspaper clippings following his music career with photographs and music contracts. Suddenly my investigative research became the storyline, pointing out numerous cases of misidentification or lack of acknowledgment of Telleria's career throughout Cuban music history literature in the United States and abroad.

Pedro Telleria was born in Cardenas, Cuba in 1902 and attended the University of Havana to study medicine. Newspaper articles discuss his early career and mentioned that he would pursue his passion of music throughout his studies, and soon withdrew after finding some success as a musician amongst local Cuban orchestras around the late 19-teens.

I began to conduct basic research and Googled PEDRO TELLERIA in the search engine, but I was unsuccessful. I suddenly became committed to investigating and collecting his career achievements and accomplishments because I felt there was so much more to be discovered. I began my quest and named it THE PEDRO TELLERIA PROJECT.

After a few days of research I found a connection to Don Azpiazu and the Havana Casino Orchestra in 1932. Click here to enjoy this amazing footage found featuring the famous orchestra, Cuban landscapes of the 30's, Rhumbera Alicia Parla and we find Pedro Telleria performing live for the first time.

The documentary film, “One More Night...with Pedro Telleria and his Orchestra,” will offer historic insight on the history of Cuban music and its musicians whom migrated from Cuba to the US and Europe, and how he impacted the trajectory of American Music and the research efforts in discovering his participation and contribution.

In 2014 I had the opportunity to film the following interviews:

  • Kenneth Basulto, Pedro's nephew
  • Jerry Statler, Kenneth's childhood friend
  • Cristobal Diaz-Ayala, Discographer and donor of the Diaz-Ayala Cuban Music collection at Florida International University
  • Eloy Cepero, radio host and Music Collector
  • And I flew to New York to interview Vincent Livelli, 91 year-old Latin Music enthusiast, dancer and storyteller

March 2016:

  • Film Editor Romina Rey edited two versions of the trailer utilizing the above interiews, one with English subtitles and one with Spanish subtitles.

April 29th 2016:

  • The documentary film trailer for, “One More Night...with Pedro Telleria and his Orchestra,” premiered for the very first time to the public at a presentation sponsored by Florida International University Libraries, The Cuban Research Intstiture and Diaz-Ayala Music Collection in Miami, Fl.

First, my goal is to visit the Island of Cuba for important research opportunities. His early childhood and career are still unclear.  The only discovery to date is pre-1930's where we find an image taken in Cuba in 1928 a part of Orquesta Cuba.  Research and funding will allow me access to historical locations needed to tell his story and access to documents that are not digitized and require in-person research.

Examples of Overall Allocation of Funding:

  • RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
  • RESEARCH IN CUBA
  • TRAVEL EXPENSES
  • FILM EQUIPMENT
  • RESEARCH IN NEW YORK
  • RESEARCH IN MIAMI
  • HISTORICAL DOCUMENTS FEES
  • LICENSING FEES FILM CREW

The final phase for furture reseach will be to trace his journey of the European Tour with famous Orchestra leader Don Azpiazu and the Havana Casino Orchestra in the early 1930's.  This time period was written about by writer and Musicologist, Alejo Carpentier, and his first hand account of his experience in Parisian cabarets.

Tellerias’ work spans from musician, to Orchestra leader and composer. Miraculously, a few of his 78 rpms records are currently housed at the Diaz-Ayala Cuban and Latin American Popular Music Collection at Florida International University in Miami, Fl.  Telleria's work can be found in other University Music Collections and State Archives across the country.

I have collected numerous documents through research facilitated remotely in the US, finding online resources, corresponding with University music collections and state archives such as The University of North Texas, New York Public Library and many more archival resources.

I look forward to sharing Pedro Telleria's story. His story was never written, so here's an opportunity to dig into history and tell it for the very first time. There are many musicians and artist like him that are in the shadows. Here is my contribution to music...to my uncle Pedro...and to his legacy.
