I design jewelry in a biomechanical, Art Nouveau meets H.R. Giger aesthetic.
The products I make are produced, not through the usual methods of mass manufacturing, but through rapid fabrication. Items are created in a computer with modeling software, and then converted from bits to atoms using 3D printing technologies. By using this method, an item can be replicated a thousand times, or only once. There are no molds, there is no casting, there are only robots building each item from the physical pixels of the material required.
This means these things made of matter are not much different than any other piece of intellectual property such as music, movies, or software.
I've been using Shapeways to print my designs in steel and plastic, and selling them online and at gallery shows for a retail markup. Since the work to produce this jewelry is entirely digital, and I believe in the idea of enriching the public domain with intellectual property, I want to make the designs freely available for everyone to modify, mash up, resell, print by the one or by the dozen, or insert into their game, movie, or art.
However, this is my livelihood, and I still need to eat and have a roof to work under ::)
How to Make This Possible
This project is to fund the release of my three most popular jewelry designs from commercial slavery. They are:
Reminiscent of a dragon or bat wing. These can be produced for $10.20 per pair in stainless steel via Shapeways
An alien ouroboros ring. Production cost is $4 to $7 depending on ring size.
A floral, nouveau inspired pendant. Production cost is $7.20 in stainless steel.
Within 1 day of the project being fully funded, I...
- Will make the original 3D models for these three items available for free download from my website.
- Will upload them to Thingiverse, a repository of open source product designs.
- Will make them available to be 3D printed, at cost of materials from Shapeways.
- Will put all three under a Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike license which allows the following:
"... lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work even for commercial reasons, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms. This license is often compared to open source software licenses. All new works based on yours will carry the same license, so any derivatives will also allow commercial use."
The Benefits for Those Involved
For myself [the design monkey]
The funds for this project go towards my time and effort to create the jewelry, allowing me to relinquish the need to make a commission off of every piece produced. Because of this, I can put my efforts towards designing new jewelry instead of spending it trying to sell enough of previously created pieces to make it work.
For you [the prospective backer]
Even if only 150 people donate $10 each, they will still be able to purchase the jewelry items for less than I would have to charge at a retail markup.
For those who donate more than that, you are contributing to make these items available to anyone in the world at cost of manufacturing, to enrich the creative commons, and to support a business model that promotes creation of new work, instead of promoting the hoarding of that which has already been created.
Also, check out the cool rewards ::) ------>
If my goal is exceeded, for every additional $500 I will release another piece from my line under the same terms as those above. Including the following:
