About this project
Thanks to your support, this project has been successfully funded!
Here's what it's all about!
Have you ever bought a new vehicle that has let you down so badly, you just don’t trust it any more?
Did you take it up with the deler and even the importer and try to resolve it amicably but just got sucked into their little game of "cat and mouse" that they play so well?
Have you ever felt that sometimes the big guys have it all worked out, and know that you will eventually run out of time and money required to continue to fight for your rights?
We’ve decided, after nearly 4 years of relentless emails, meetings and legal costs, to give up on their little game and start a game of our own...
We are going to totally destroy our $49,000 Jeep Cherokee, for 3 reasons.
1. It's been the most unreliable car we have EVER owned (and still has issues today!).
2. We don't think it's right to sell our defective car onto someone else
3. We have been approached by many of you in the same situation as us, so we hope our action will get the government to review the current Australian Consumer Law and introduce a "Lemon Law" like the one that has been in the USA since the 1970's that protects consumers from defective vehicles.
Check out the video that tells you all about it, if you can't see the video, the words are below for your enjoyment and involvement.
I bought a new car that was cursed from the start.
It’s had so many problems, just look at my chart!
The fuel line dropped off at the time of the delivery.
If only I'd known, this was the start of my misery.
If I’d known back then, what I now know today.
I'd have torn up the paperwork and said NO WAY!
Within 14 months there'd been issues galore.
Needless to say, I was annoyed to my core.
I went to the dealer, and Chrysler Australia.
Trusting they’d help with this monumental failure
They raised me a case and gave me a number,
I so looked forward to seeing the end of my Klunker.
Nothing came back but a call from their agent,
your car’s ready again, and thanks for your patience!
I was fuming inside, but what could I do,
I needed a car, as I'm sure you do too.
By the 17th issue I was done this purchase,
and demanded a meet with those running this circus
My meetings were rejected with every request,
Then one was accepted, I thought I was blessed!
We met in Melbourne for 2 friggin hours,
hoping they'd help me with their senior management powers.
All I got back was a bill and a note.
Here’s a free battery, now go home little bloke.
The very next week they made me an offer.
half of my purchase price, to stick in my coffer.
Gave it some thought, now really i did!
But why take only HALF for my piece of shiiiii…
..it wasn’t long after, that I took them to court,
where they upped their offer with a cough and a snort.
500 bucks more is what they said after,
I dropped 10 GRAND in my-attempt-to barter.
They sent in a letter demanding I remove,
the comments on Facebook that they found to be rude.
They went on to demand, and I tell you it’s true
An apology from ME in the Financial Review!
Lost and frustrated, what should I do next,
I could sell the damned car, but then I’ll never have rest.
Cause why should my lemon be sold on to another,
To pass on my problems and have them suffer?
I've resolved to DESTROY IT and you can too,
By pledging for options of what we can do.
Cause if YOU place a pledge, I have a surprise!
Come and smash it yourself… just watch your eyes (wear safety glasses)
We can hit it with hammers, with crowbars and then
We’ll shoot it with arrows again and again.
We'll smash out the windows and chop off the doors,
And while we do it, you’ll hear the crowd roar.
Cause everyone's invited to see it all happen,
and you can even HELP US ensure that it’s flattened.
And after you’re done you better stand right back,
Cause machines will roll in for the final attack.
The big boys are coming and bringing equipment,
And these guys I tell you, have total commitment
Their equipment is huge and will tear it like paper,
If it got any bigger there’d be nothing left but vapour!
But I need something left I can load on a tray,
'cause I’ve listed this wreck for one dollar on eBay!(seriously I have listed it for 1 dollar, just search "Destroy my Jeep" on eBay Australia.)
Now I’m not sure it’s worth it, cause it been nothing but trouble,
but maybe someone likes to collect rubble?
Did I mention TV, media and papers?
It’s got everyone talking, even my neighbours!
I’ve arranged a film crew, to stream it live on the day
and record it and load it on YouTube for replay
I know that the government's watching this now,
so I’ll give you my word and I take this vow.
I trust that my action will create a review,
of The Australian Consumer Law that's missing a screw.
Lemon Laws are missing that protect the consumer,
The U.S. have got 'em and that's not a rumor.
When the dust all settles and this Jeep is left smoking,
And our law is updated... and I’m not joking.
New cars will come with proper protection,
with a lemon law in place to stop the deception.
Raise the awareness of a law that we need,
and protect all others with this simple deed:
"Cause a car should just drive when you turn the thing on
And we shouldn't have to worry about damn things going wrong"
My Jeep will become known as car that made waves,
with a change to the law that sends lemons to a grave
Be part of a change and pledge if you could,
and we’ll sacrifice my Jeep for the greater good!
Thank you for listening to my little ditty.
Can you tell my dealings have made me a little bit sh!tty?
Many more victims have come forward so I'm not the only one.
Maybe this is why the government banned guns?
Just google the name and you see soon enough.
If you mess with an Aussie, don’t you dare call his bluff
I can't do this alone cause they're as big as they come
But I know that together, we CAN win this one.
Now I’m running out of words that will rhyme with my fight
So please get involved... and I’ll be checking so see if you’ve pledged by tonight
Risks and challenges
We have already checked out the legalities of this project with our solicitor, the local councils and the police and fire departments and there is nothing illegal about destroying your own car on private property.
Here are some of the questions people asked us during the establishment of this project.
Q. Yep, this sounds like fun, but why are you destroying at $49,000 vehicle?
A. This Jeep has been a major pain in the you-know-what since we purchased it. (seriously, the fuel line fell off at the dealership after we’d signed the paperwork, so we couldn't even drive our new vehicle home on the day we purchased it!) It has encountered 19 further issues over 4 years and has been towed 4 times.
We've tried for 3 long years to get the dealer & importer to replace/refund this vehicle but they are unwilling to comply. Nearly everyone we've spoken to has told us to burn it, and asked if they could light the match.
So this Kickstarter campaign was started to let people get involved and is spreading far and wide to people all over the world who’d like to show the big guys that the little guy (you and me) can still have the last laugh.
We hope that the importer takes this opportunity to review their policy on vehicle replacement and refunds, and makes life a little easier for others who may be going through the same pain.
Q. How did you come to the figure of $18,500?
A. We paid $49,126 for this vehicle 4 years ago and have been demanding a refund or replacement for the past 3 years. The manufacturer/importer has offered us a measly $22,500.
If we accept their offer, they could ON-SELL our lemon to some other poor sucker, which just isn't right.
We are now writing the names of our supporters all over the car, so we've dropped the amount by $4k to allow for the depreciation due to the requirement for a re-spray ;-)
Q. Can you legally do this?
A. Yes, we've been to the local councils, police and fire services.
Thankfully the kind police officer put away his taser gun after I explained WHY I wanted to set fire to my car (kidding, he didn't really pull out his taser gun, but he was very concerned the start of the conversation)
As long as this is carried out on private property and we take the proper precautions to ensure surrounding properties are not under any danger, we are not breaking any law.
Note, We will have safety equipment on site and a mechanic will safely de-gas the aircon, remove the fuel tank and remove all fluids from the vehicle before we start the demolition.
Q. What about insurances and registration?
A. The vehicle is currently insured and registered. We will de-register the vehicle, remove the registration plates and terminate the insurance in the morning before the event.
Q. Where will this destruction be held?
A. The entire event will be held on Saturday 4th October 2014 on private property in Bli Bli on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, Australia. All backers and the media are invited (encouraged) to attend.
Backers who come to the event are welcome to play out their pledge in-person if it's safe to do so (sorry, you can't play with the big-boys machines)
The actual address of the event is under wraps and will be announced closer to the event.
Q. What if you don’t make your target?
A. If we don’t make our target, you don’t pay a cent and we don’t proceed with this project. Simple as that, there’s no risk to you and no risk to us, and that’s why the Kickstarter model is such a success!
It would be a real shame though, as this will send a very clear signal to the government that a review of the law is required!
Q. What if you raise more than your target.
A. If we make more than our target, we will throw on a sausage sizzle and even purchase marshmallows to cook by the burning corpse of the vehicle,
We might even look at hiring more equipment (eg a crane to drop the vehicle from a great height, or a bulldozer to run over it perhaps?)
Q. What has gone wrong with your Jeep?
A. Please don't get me started...actually too late. here goes...Fuel Line fell off (at the time of getting handover in the showroom!), Loss of all climate controls (twice), Rattling in drivers door, Clock couldn't keep the correct time (for 2 years!), Bash plate hanging off, Turbo inlet manifold cracked (towtruck required), Rain sensor failed, Major coolant leak inside vehicle (towtruck required), External mirrors getting loose all the damn time (special screws so I can't even tighten them myself if I wanted to!), Ignition failure (towtruck required), Faulty seat belt tensioner, Heater exchange cracked behind dashboard, Starter motor intermittently running after the engine has started (has been replaced but keeps doing it), Drivetrain Control error (towtruck required), wipers intermittently coming on when driving in dry conditions, Rear strut leaking oil and had to be replaced... see why we want to burn it?
Q. Are you worried about the car “disappearing” before the event?
A. Sort of, based on past experience we don't think the thief would get very far before he'd be calling Jeep Assist, but just to be on the safe side, we have fitted video surveillance where it's securely stored and have 3 cameras watching the area where the vehicle is located. Additionally we have fitted GPS tracking to the vehicle so if the vehicle is stolen the police can track it within 3 feet of it’s location, so they can apprehend the thief and we can strap him/her to the car for the duration of the "Destroy My Jeep" event (OK we're joking about strapping the thief to it... but it would be fun!)
Q. Are other car manufacturers welcome at the event?
A. Why not, we've got a couple of pledges there for you to "sponsor" components of this event. You can even bring one of your cars along, and promote it at the event (check with me beforehand to ensure we've got the space please), just be warned that we take no responsibility if a stray arrow or flying bit of Jeep debris hits your car OK?
Q. Can I bring my lemon to your event?
A. Sure, if you think you can get it here, we will have other lemons lined up for the media to film on arrival and give you a chance to tell your story too.
Q. Is Jeep invited to the event?
Q. What can we do to help?
A. The most important thing right now is to get to our target of $18,500 as quick as possible, so we can destroy our vehicle and make a global statement about doing the right thing by customers and the requirement for a review of our law.
Next, please tell ALL your friends about this campaign by clicking the share button or just tell them to go to www.destroymyjeep.com or straight to this page.
Lastly, to make this a success we need lots of media coverage.
We have already had great coverage from the awesome people at The Courier Mail, The Daily UK, KIIS FM, Radio 2GB. Radio 4GB, ABC Radio, Sea FM and Mix FM and even on Television! (WIN News).
If you are involved in the media or know of people who are, please tell them to contact me or just direct them to this page. I am available for interviews, phone conferences, and whatever it takes to ensure this is a success and the law is reviewed.
For anyone who has an issue with this campaign, please send me your complaint in the mail, as I need the kindling to start the fire.
