Expletive Deleted Games: A little about us and Dice Table.
Hi everyone, we are Expletive Deleted Games and this is our first Kickstarter project, we hope the first of many. We are a new software company that is finding its way but is starting with lots of talent. Dice Table was an idea we had that we thought was needed, but was also a great way to start small and show off what we could do. Dice Table is a 3D physics based simulation for rolling dice. Unlike other dice apps, you will be able to save several sets of customized dice, with cross-platform networking capability, a hold table, and perfectly balanced dice from D4-D20. Also, aside from premium dice, tables and other optional add-ons, it will be absolutely free on all platforms.
How often have you gone to play your favorite board game and it was missing the dice? Now, you can stop searching the house and just pull out your cell phone. Want to play D&D or Vampire: The Masquerade over skype? Now everyone can open Dice Table and watch the rolls together. What we have so far is a playable beta version, you can find it here: expletivedeletedgames.com/dice-table.html. In order to play with the beta you will need the Unity Web-player installed on your system, it works just like flash or java. We feel unity is an amazing tool for creating 3D content, and it will allow us to easily port our games and apps to an amazing number of systems. We are looking for funding to finish Dice table and to port it at least to android devices, though we do want to eventually have it available on all mobile devices. We do want to move it onto Apple as soon as we can but the approval process is somewhat more time consuming and requires equipment we do not yet have. We also want to have a stand alone version for PC and Mac and we want all players to be able to play over the net no matter what device they are on.
Features we need to add.
Networking: Right now you can load Dice Table on your browser and simulate any number of Dice for just about any game you can imagine, but we want you to be able to share a table with your friends, no matter how far they are from you.
Additional dice and table designs: In the current Beta version, you can choose between 7 colors for your dice, but we want you to be able to customize your very own set of virtual dice. Once you have a Dice Table account, you will be able to create multiple sets of dice and customize them any way you want. We plan on offering premium dice designs and premium tables for a minimal fee, but using the app will always be free.
Mobile Versions: We can't finish the mobile versions of the app until we can purchase licenses from Unity for the mobile devices. Once we have the licenses we can produce those versions fairly quickly, although we will still need to get some additional equipment in order to test it and make sure everything is ready for release.
Features we want to add.
Improved lighting and other visual effects: Right now we are using the free version of Unity to create our games, but with enough funding we can move to the professional platform which will allow us to add many new and interesting visual tweaks. Who knows what we can accomplish? Roll a critical hit and we'll put a spotlight on that die. 3D textures will let you put your table on thick shag carpet. Additionally the pro versions will also let us use real-time shadows and keep the size of the app small so that you aren't running out of room on your smart phone.
D100: The ultimate weapon in any Dice Master's arsenal. Recreating the physical shapes of D10s 12s and 20s was a somewhat painfull process already, but we want to break through that wall of pain and bring you the elusive D100. We already have a percentile D10 so any game that will allow you to play any game that needs one but who doesn't want that big beautiful 100 sided weapon in their virtual dice bag?
What do you get?
Check out all our tiers of rewards. Anyone that pledges even a dollar will get their name in the credits, but pledge $75 or more and you will be in the credits as a Dice Master with a coffee mug to prove it. $150 or more will get you credited as Dice God and you can strut around town like an Olympian in your Dice God hoodie.
Pledges $5 and up will get you premium content such as additional tables and die designs, see the rewards section for details.
$25 or more and your own carpet can appear in our game, all we need is a high quality picture.
$50 and we'll ship you an Expletive Deleted Games T-shirt.
My personal favorite though is the $100 level. At that level and above, you will be able to ship your dice to us, or email us with multiple high quality photos of your dice, and we will put your dice in the game and link them to your account only. It will be just like Tron, but with your dice. Your friends will be able to see you rolling with your dice but they belong to you and only you.
How will we use your money?
The more we get the more we will be able to do. We need to purchase Unity add-ons in order create mobile versions, those are $400 each, ($1500 each for professional versions which will allow us to incorporate additional graphical features and keep the size of the app to a minimum). We also need the professional version of Filter Forge which retails at $400 so that we can access their huge library of textures and create our own unique textures so that we can create a huge variety of options to our users. Additionally Filter Forge will allow us to create filters that will allow a more realistic 3d textured effect on all of our 2D surfaces. If we can raise enough we also would like to port Dice Table to all of your favorite consoles, which involves additional software from Unity as well as development kits from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo and any required licensing fees. Depending on what works best when we begin integrating network capability we may also need a server that will coordinate all of the running games (we hope to avoid this but it may be necessary).
Risks and challenges
The two biggest challenges we face are both networking issues. The first is rather technical and has to do with the client-server relationship. We want to make sure that someone using the app on an iPad can connect to somebody using the web version, or any other combination. Until we can create and test the mobile versions we will not know for sure if our solutions will work without a dedicated server. The second challenge has to do with users logging on to the app. We may decide to use a 3rd party to handle log-ins, but again its something that we cannot decide until we are further along with mobile/networking development. We believe that these issues will be relatively easy to handle, but even in our worst-case estimation any problems we run into will not push back the release of the finished app by any more than one month.
We don't use any random number generation. Each die in the app is an object controlled by physics, Once the dice have been shaken the desired amount the dice are released and fall where they will. The dice are balanced by virtue of being created by a computer and are mathematically consistent.
For $25 and above, recieve a total of 6 premium tables, 4 premium dice, 3 premium carpets and if you send us a picture of your carpet we will include it in the game with your name, i.e. "Brad's Carpet."
Above plus a "DICE MASTER" coffee mug with a screen shot from Dice Table so you can tell your co-workers how you helped us develop the app that they now use to play Warhammer 40k. Also your credit in the game will be as a Dice Master.
My favorite reward. Send us your dice or high resolution pictures of them and we will use them as a template for a private die design in the app that only you will have, but other players can see you using. Basically use your own dice.
