About this project
UPDATE: Thank YOU!
Wow, we're so overwhelmed over here. Three whole days left, and we've crossed our first hurdle. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
We can press on with new strength because you've made it clear, in a very real way, that you support our film, and you support the change that the Music & Memory project will bring.
But this isn't over. Anything over our goal will only go towards making the film even better, and to help us bring it to even more theaters near you.
We are so grateful for all the new friends we've made, and we cannot wait to show you this film! Let's keep going, and send the world a message that we won't ever let the music stop.
The Alive Inside Team
About The Film
Alive Inside is the story of Dan Cohen, a small town social worker who discovers the power personalized music has to "awaken" and regenerate deeply locked memories in patients with dementia and Alzheimer's.
Today, in the US alone, there are 5 million people suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia, and this number is expected to double in the next 25 years. A staggering 1 in 6 of us will develop some form of dementia and, with the world's population aging, this number will only increase.
Alive Inside follows Dan as he struggles to change the lives for those affected, and to make personalized music a standard of care in all 16,000 nursing homes in the US.
UPDATE: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
I wanted to pause for a moment to tell you how moved I am by all of you who have given to ALIVE INSIDE. I understand the sacrifice and you are all heroes in my book. I'm so grateful that the beauty of giving music to our 'lost' elders has resonated with you.
In our world, people often see aging as negative. I have been guilty of this myself, but in making this film I got to see beneath the surface of Alzheimer's and dementia. ALIVE INSIDE is really about the beauty and the life inside all of us- even those who have lost so much.
More than your generousity with our KickStarter campaign, the personal stories you've shared with us have been amazing. So many of you have been so strong and open hearted as you've dealt with your aging loved ones.
One of the people who reached out to us is a man named Dave Roth. Both of Dave's parent's have Alzheimer's disease. After seeing one of our early screenings in NYC, Dave flew home to Kansas to deliver personalized music to his mother. He then sent us this video... You HAVE to see it!!!
Even more, Dave is a pit musician on Broadway and has started an iPod drive on Broadway!
To help a helpless person is good, but to help them feel ALIVE INSIDE is an even deeper gift in my eyes. When we experience another's pleasure it changes how we think of them, and this is where the magic lies!
Thank you for all that you are doing.
UPDATE: New Gift — Sponsor an elder for $75
We announced this early last week, but we wanted to make sure everyone had a chance to take part in it. Now that we're in the home stretch, we'd like to turn the attention back to what this is really about — bringing personalized music to elders all over.
Through Dan's work, Henry and hundreds more have been able to experience the awakening effects that music has over our minds. There are millions more in need and waiting.
Our motivation for making (and needing to finish) Alive Inside is that we believe this film will be the vehicle through which the world will come to believe in Music & Memory.
Over the course of our development we're striving to put Dan's face on the map and deliver 1,000,000 iPods to nursing homes.
You can help us along the road to realizing our goals right now.
Donate $75 dollars today and choose to either receive an iPod or have our team deliver an iPod, in your name, directly to an elder who needs it. We'll also arrange the consultation to set up their playlists with the songs that touch them the most.
You can pay it forward before your incentive has the chance to reach your hands.
Why We Need Your Help
About a month ago a clip from our film went viral. 6.4 million people watched it on YouTube in just over four days. In the clip we meet Henry, a 94-year-old dementia patient unable to recognize his daughter or even remember how many daughters he has. However, after listening to music from his past, he “awakens” almost instantly and is seemingly brought back to life.
This clip invoked an outpouring of emotion beyond anything we could have imagined. We've been flooded with emails and calls ever since Henry's story swept the web. People from all four corners of the world are clamoring to see Alive Inside and we want to bring it to them…and to you!
The thing is, the film isn’t quite finished. We’re almost done, but we still need to complete the color correction, audio mixing, graphic integration, acquire music rights, and create a digital cinema package, which we’ll need for our big theatrical release.
As part of our project we are also developing the official Alive Inside App. This App will help anyone, no matter their condition, find the music that has meant the most to them in their lives.
Right now we’re a small team of three working out of our director’s very small East Village bedroom (no joke). With your help we’ll finish the film, bring it to theaters this fall, and introduce the world to Dan, Henry, and the other friends we've met who have inspired us.
Sure. We need your money, but we also need your manpower. If you’ve come across this page, but you don’t have a dollar to spare, that’s OK! You can still be of tremendous help. Share this link, share this video and become a part of our community. Like us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter and tell your friends, your family and your colleagues to do the same.
Here's The Rest Of What We Need You To Know
- It’s all or nothing, folks. If we don’t meet our goal we don’t get to keep any of the money we’ve raised. So, if you donate a dollar and want us to succeed, make sure you tell everyone you know and your kitchen sink to donate too.
- Just so you know, this film was made without any affiliation with Apple. Music & Memory just uses their products. In fact, we’ve had no financial support from Apple or any other corporate sponsor. We’re bootstrapping this thing with a group of dedicated people working for little, and in many cases no pay.
- There’s no such thing as too much. Anything extra will only go back into the project, making the film even better, and getting it on to even more screens in the US and around the world!
Henry started a small fire; help us turn it into a big one. Let’s inspire the world, and help more people be Alive Inside. Please consider contributing today!
