About

One Bag. ANY fabric.
One Bag. ANY fabric.

The Stitchsmith clutch is the most customisable bag of its kind.

Designed to be transformed in minutes, this bag is capable of complementing your outfit, whatever you choose to wear.

Re-cover the Stitchsmith clutch in the comfort of your own home using ready-made fabric covers or create your own using virtually any fabric. You can do this again and again.

No specialist skills or tools required. Add the finishing touches of a clasp and a strap for a truly unique bag.

When you purchase a Stitchsmith clutch you will receive:

  • Stitchsmith clutch with two pairs of ready-made covers,
  • two pairs of templates for making your own covers
  • 2 clasps
  • 2 straps.

At least 8 different looks!

What’s a girl to do? You’re expected to be wearing something different every time you’re photographed, but having different clutch bags to complement different outfits is impracticable, expensive and a drain on the environment.

We've designed the most versatile clutch you'll ever own, meaning you can create a new look for every occasion, without the environmental impact.

Here are some of the styles we've worked up using fabrics which have been purchased from the high-street or recycled from existing items of clothing.

Unlike made-to-order bags, the Stitchsmith clutch can be customised in many different ways, again and again.

Changing one or more elements can give your bag a whole new look. Our patented design means you can have all of the benefits of a fast fashion product without the financial or environmental drawbacks.

To change the fabric on the Stitchsmith clutch, pull to release the clasp and remove the metal outer frames on each side of the bag.

The fabric cover can then be removed and replaced with a different cover - one that's made by us or created by you.

Wrap a different fabric cover around your clutch then re-attach the metal outer frame and clasp

Our ready-made covers have been designed by talented up-and-coming textile designers: winners of the Stitchsmith Prize for Design competition. You can find out more about these designs below.

After the launch we will be selling a wide range of fabric covers on our website, including silks, contemporary prints and luxury faux leathers.

Making your own cover is simple and doesn't require any specialist tools or skills.

The Stitchsmith clutch is held tightly closed by neodymium magnets. The clasps on the top of the clutch help open the bag but are predominantly there to hold the outer frame in place and to look good.

The clasps are held in place by an engineered ball and spring system which means they can be removed with a strong pull but there's no risk of them falling out.

Changing the clasp is easy: open the bag and pull out each of the clasp halves. Push different clasp halves into place.

We have designed two clasps: the Classic Clasp and the Signature Clasp. Both come in the box. We will be expanding our range of clasps after we launch.

The Stitchsmith clutch has separate attachment points for a shoulder strap and a wrist strap. These straps can be removed or tucked into the bag when not in use. Both straps come in the box. We will be expanding our range of straps after we launch.

The metalwork on the Stitchsmith clutch is available in two colours: gold and silver. This includes the outer metal frame, the clasps and straps.

You will be able to select your metalwork colour choice once the Kickstarter campaign has come to an end.

If we reach our stretch target of £125,000 we will also be able to offer the Stitchsmith clutch in rose gold.

Kickstarter is an all or nothing crowdfunding platform which means we'll only receive funding if we meet our target of £60,000 in 30 days.

If we are successful, then each of our backers will be charged at the end of those 30 days and we will deliver our first run of bags later this year.

If we fail to reach our target, then we will be unable to manufacture and none of our backers will be charged.

£60,000 is enough for us to pay for the tooling, materials and labour for a limited first manufacturing run of gold and silver Stitchsmith clutch bags.

We would love to surpass this target, however, and have therefore set a stretch goal of £125,000. If we reach this goal we'll be able to increase our manufacturing order size and offer all of our backers the Stitchsmith clutch in rose gold as well.

The Stitchsmith clutch is designed to be elegant and stylish but still big enough to fit your essentials (including a plus-sized smart phone if you have one).

Don’t be fooled into thinking this bag might be all style and no substance.

We’ve spent years meticulously engineering and re-engineering the product, prototyping and testing so that it doesn't just 'do the job'. We wanted to produce a bag that could last a lifetime.

Unlike some clutch bags which are poorly made and might only last a season, we were determined to create something much better: a bag that not only looks the part but also benefits from all the care and attention you would expect from a premium product.

Details of the materials used to manufacture the Stitchsmith clutch can be found in the FAQs.

When you purchase a Stitchsmith clutch we'll give you all the components you need to create multiple looks, all for the price of one bag.

This is what comes in the box:

  • Stitchsmith clutch bag in a metalwork colour of your choice, ready assembled with a Signature clasp and in a Prize for Design winning fabric
  • An additional pair of ready-made fabric covers made from a premium plain fabric to complement the metalwork colour of your clutch.
  • Two pairs of Stitchsmith foam backing templates for creating your own fabric covers*
  • Classic clasp (your additional clasp)
  • Wrist strap
  • Shoulder strap
  • Premium cotton dust protector bag

*Additional pairs of foam templates are available as an Add On (see below). We will continue to sell backing templates on our website once we have completed the first manufacturing run.

Once the campaign is over, we will be in touch to find out which metalwork colour Stitchsmith clutch you'd like and to collect your shipping address details. We will then keep you updated throughout the process, and you will become one of the first people to enjoy customising a Stitchsmith clutch in late 2019.

Please note that if you choose our duo or trio reward you'll be able to select any combination of metalwork colours via the survey. Ideal if you and your friends have the same taste :-)

We have two rewards which are exclusive to this Kickstarter campaign: It's Personal and It's All About You.

It's Personal

Make your Stitchsmith clutch as personal on the inside as it is on the outside.

We are offering 20 of our customers the exclusive opportunity to design their own lining.

Your personalised lining will be made from the same high quality fabric used in our other bags, but how it looks will be completely up to you.

When the campaign finishes we'll put you in touch with one of our designers who will work with you to conceptualise your design. You may already have a particular design in mind or you may have an idea that needs developing over a number of iterations with the help of our experts.

Once you're happy with the design we'll send you a sample of your bespoke fabric before we turn it into the lining of your bag.

By selecting this reward you'll instantly become one of our most valued backers.  We hope that your bespoke clutch will continue to remind you of your significant contribution in kickstarting our business.

It's All About You

This reward is the absolute showstopper and one for the seriously fashion minded.

We've partnered with Hand and Lock to bring you the most decadent clutch you can imagine.

Hand & Lock have 250 years' experience embellishing, embroidering and monogramming garments for the Royal family, the military and fashion houses including Dior, Hermes and Louis Vuitton.

We will put you in contact with the Hand and Lock design team who will work with you to design and produce a bespoke embellished cover for your Stitchsmith clutch. You may wish to use your own design as the starting point or you may prefer to take inspiration from the  experts.

This will be a collaborative process and once you're happy with the final design Hand and Lock will hand embroider this for you using the finest workmanship.

We will also arrange for you to meet with one of our product designers to design your own custom-made clasp which will be produced especially for you. You may might decide to design a clasp that includes your initials or an emblem that is special to you, or you might have another idea altogether. The choice will be yours.

And of course we'll finish your completely bespoke Stitchsmith clutch with a personalised lining, just as we've described in the reward above.

This is a real opportunity to experience working with high-skilled specialist designers to  create the bag of your dreams. In return we will be eternally grateful for the contribution you have made in making our venture possible.

NB: All of these meetings will take place in London but if that's not convenient, we can also work with you over the phone, by email or via Skype.

Once you've backed our campaign you'll be able to add any of the above Add Ons to your order before our campaign finishes on 29th May.

Clutch bags have two primary functions: to be spacious enough to hold your essential personal items and to complete your outfit. We now live in an age where every outfit we've worn to a special occasion is on social media before we've had a chance to remove our make-up. We're expected to be wearing something different every time we're photographed but having different clutch bags to complement different outfits is just impracticable. They can be costly, take up valuable storage space and wearing something only a handful of times is detrimental to the environment.

We believe you shouldn't have to damage the planet just to look good but we appreciate most people like a new look. This is why we developed a bag which can be used time and again yet can be revitalised whenever you want. We believe that if everyone accessorised more imaginatively we could make better use of the items we already own and help reduce textile waste. What's not to love?

Last year we launched the inaugural Stitchsmith Prize for Design - a competition to find beautiful designs with which to launch our bags. We received almost 200 entries from budding textile designers at UK universities. These were the winning entries...

These are the designs which will feature on our first manufactured bags. They are exclusive designs which are only available with the Stitchsmith clutch. We are thrilled to be able to give a platform to young textile designers and look forward to working with many more in the future.

The Stitchsmith Prize for Design will continue to run every year and we will be introducing a new category for jewellery designers so that we can produce some incredible clasps designs for you in the future. We'll also be sourcing designers through other channels other than our competition.

Our dream is to develop a community of talented textile and jewellery designers who will design fabrics and clasps for us but still under their own name. This means you'll have access, via our website, to some of the best designers without the big price tag. Our designers will get recognition and be able to use the Stitchsmith clutch bag to showcase their talent.

Inventor, Laura Camerer Cuss, came up with the idea for the Stitchsmith clutch having spent years attending special occasions without the perfect bag. From the beginning her goal was to design a clutch that was truly customisable: one that could be re-covered in any fabric, any number of times by the wearer.

Developing such a bag has not been an easy task and one that's taken a lot of teamwork. Creating a bag that has all the functionality of Laura’s original vision but that also looks elegant and stylist has taken countless prototypes and re-designs. We are proud to have created a bag so unique it’s been granted a patent.

All of our prototypes have been produced either by hand or using 3D printing technology. For actual production, however, we need to pay for manufacturing tools to produce the plastic and metal components of the Stitchsmith clutch. Up to now this project has been completely self-funded by Laura. She has been determined to take this project as far as she could without investment but now needs your help.

This tooling is expensive and the factories we are working with have minimum order quantities, meaning that we'll only be able to manufacture our bags if we're able to place a large enough initial order. Please support our project by sharing and pledging and help us get the Stitchsmith clutch into production! Thank you.

The Stitchsmith clutch has been meticulously designed in CAD by highly skilled product designers. Thanks to 3D printing technology we have been able to create numerous prototypes, each of which have helped shape the design. For over a year we have been in close communication with our chosen manufacturers with the assistance of a highly-reputable supply chain manager. Where necessary the design has been tweaked to ensure each component of the Stitchsmith clutch is straightforward to manufacture, fit for purpose and ensures that the bag will last for many many years to come.

Risks and challenges

We're confident we have a design that is both functional and beautiful. The biggest challenge for us is ensuring this design is manufactured to the incredibly high standard that we're aiming for, on time, within budget, and manufactured to our superlatively high standard. We weren't prepared to crowdfund until we were certain this was achieveable.

We have been working with a supply chain manager for over a year. Each and every component that makes up the clutch has been inspected by them and modified for manufacturing where necessary. They have assisted us with sourcing the different manufacturers we require, each of whom have been diligently audited and all manufactured components will undergo a strict quality control process.

By going through a supply chain manager we also significantly reduce the risk of budget creep and delayed delivery dates.
