About this project
Greetings! My name is Mary Cagle, and I'm the creator of the webcomic Let's Speak English.
Let's Speak English is an autobio comic about the 2.5 years I spent teaching English to elementary students in the rural town of Kurihara, Japan.
The original webcomic was hand-drawn and published online at Marycagle.com during my stay as a teacher, and covers all kinds of topics - from dealing with language barriers to learning how to be an adult. The strip naturally ended with my return to America, and I'm finally ready to assemble my journey as a book.
I had an amazing time in Japan with all my adorable students, but creating comics has always been my passion. Now that I'm back in the US, I'm making the transition to full-time comics work! This book will be one of my first big steps as a professional comic creator.
So here it is, the 100-page(ish) softcover book of Let's Speak English!
Here are the different items you can pre-order! LSE is a pretty cute and simple book, and thus so are these reward tiers! If you'd like to buy a tier twice (like to get a copy for yourself, and one for a friend), all you gotta do is double the tier price when you pledge!
Here are the designs for the sticker set and the double-sided bookmark!
The three last tiers have unique items! The $40 tier includes a one-of-a-kind bookplate with an original sketch and signature. The $100 tier gets you that and an original strip from the comic, drawn in ink on bristol and measuring 14x5.5 inches with rounded corners. You'll be able to request a specific strip or topic once backer surveys go out, and I'll do my best to cover as many requests as possible. It's first-come-first-serve on these fellas, though, so keep an eye out!
The $170 tier includes a commission on top of all that, so here's an example of what the commissions are like! These are original 8.5x11 inked cardstock drawings of a single person or humanoid character of your choice. Dogs or mythical creatures or whatever are also doable! Mecha men are out of the question, however!
If we go beyond our goal of $10,000, we've got a few surprises in store with the Stretch Goals!
At $15,000: Fancy spot gloss will be added to the matte cover so the art pops like WHOA! You won't believe it! (You'll probably believe it.)
At $20,000: I'll add additional content to the book! There's a lot of interesting stuff that happened during my trip that was hard to fit into the comics, so these would be extra pages of short stories with accompanying illustrations!
At $25,000: Donations! Five copies of LSE will be donated to public libraries across the US.
UPDATE! Beyond $25,000: For each additional $1000 we raise beyond 25k, we'll donate a copy to an additional library! We'll have a spot in the backer survey to suggest libraries for us to donate to :)
Let's Speak English is printed in partnership with Hiveworks (www.thehiveworks.com). The Hiveworks team will be helping with backer management, printing and shipping.
And the music in the video is Carefree by Kevin MacLeod.
Thank you for your support!!
Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarter, but I have the help of the Hiveworks team, who have years of general webcomic-and-print management. I'm confident that we'll see this Kickstarter through in a professional and timely manner, especially as the vast majority of the content work has already been done.
All delays to fulfillment would be linked to the creation of additional content for the book, which I'll begin work on as soon as we meet any relevant goals.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
