About

Guitar Education is in Trouble...

...and only you can help save it!

Overly dramatic? Nope! The proliferation of online tools - especially YouTube - has brought us to the brink of an extinction event for great guitar instruction.

If you’re an aspiring Rock & Metal guitarist, you need an Avatar - and fast. You know, like that “Dune” dude, or He-Man.

Word on the street is, a Six String Savior is about to manifest in book form - a Mighty Tome that harkens back to that guitar-centric era of the 80s and early 90s; before the Internet, before the over-reliance on videos, and before great guitar playing disappeared from the radio and popular culture. In other words, beginning guitarists -

You need this book, right here:

 About The Book

Beginner Guitar: No Wimps! is MGA’s landmark contribution to the education of all beginning guitarists. This is my 7th guitar book (and that’s not counting the Metal Mailing, Master’s Arena, etc.)

In No Wimps!, I’ve distilled over 15 years of experience teaching players of all ages, styles, and ability levels. If you’re a newbie on the guitar, there are a special set of problems and hurdles that you face. For you, No Wimps! is like the Golden Ticket in the Wonka Bar - you’ll have work to do, it won’t be easy, but if you follow where it leads, then you’re in for the adventure of a lifetime!

How It Works

No Wimps! is organized into 21 Sessions. Each is carefully designed to give you exactly what you need, in exactly the right order. You’ll take as long as you like to master each Session - it’s the results that matter, not the time table. Each Session is further organized into two areas: Physical and Mental. It’s this distinction, and the cumulative skill-building that results, that makes No Wimps! such a powerful and effective book. Here are just some of the topics and skills you’ll dive into, right away:

Physical

  • Holding and using the pick - the right way, for maximum speed and power
  • Details of left-hand placement, for the most efficient movement
  • The most useful chords for playing songs right away - and how to master them anywhere on the neck
  • Secrets of clean, crisp, and chunky Power Chords - a staple of Rock & Metal
  • Fundamentals of awesome soloing, like legato, alternate picking, tremolo, bending, sequencing, and phrasing

Mental

  • How to understand, build, and use chords anywhere
  • Fundamentals of reading rhythm, and how to mix rhythm with TAB
  • Master the notes on the guitar neck, like a real musician
  • Understand how scales relate to chords, and how guitarists use them to write great riffs, songs, and solos
  • How to take what most guitarists only think of as “patterns”, and actually make music with them - confidently, and all over the neck

All that - and a lot, lot more! “No Wimps!” is as detailed and comprehensive as it gets, while remaining clearly written and easy to understand throughout. There are tons of playing examples, exercises, and photos too!

Say...This Sounds Like It’s Written Already!?

Beginner Guitar: No Wimps! is pretty much complete. In its present form, the book weighs in at a detail-stuffed 115 pages. BUT - it hasn't been released yet! This Kickstarter is happening for two main reasons:

  • I’m including extra content, exclusive to the Kickstarter Special Edition of the book
  • It’s an opportunity to include other Metal Guitar Academy releases as part of the rewards, in special bundles

Here are some pages from the No Wimps! book (in no particular order), so that you can get a feel for how it’s put together:

Another benefit of the book already being written is that you won’t have to wait forever to get it. Creating the extra, Kickstarter-exclusive content, and proofing the book for spelling, typos, etc. is about all that will need to be completed after this campaign is successfully consummated. Then, it's time for you to rock!

Rewards

Check out the Rewards section of this campaign for more detail about each reward bundle. And, If you want to learn more about the other MGA books included in these rewards (like Sweep Picking: Steam Powered, The Chord Book, etc.) just go to MetalGuitarAcademy.com/books to read all about 'em!

About Metal Guitar Academy

Brett Miller - MGA's Head of Shred!
Brett Miller - MGA's Head of Shred!

Metal Guitar Academy is more a Movement than a company (or maybe a political party..., or a cult...) Well, ideally it contains the best aspects from all of the above, without the conformity or Kool-Aid! It’s even got an official ideology: the T.N.T. Guitar Strategy - Technique / Neck Knowledge / Theory™ Here's what it’s all about.

Explode Your Playing With T.N.T. !

There’s been a glaring deficiency in the World of Guitar Instruction: the lack of a beginner’s guitar method that tells the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. Namely, that right from the get-go, you need to be building a solid framework of skill in three areas: your technique, your knowledge of the guitar neck, and a “big picture” understanding of how music works (music theory). Most beginning guitar books (all, in fact, that I’ve seen - and I’ve seen a lot!) seem to do a lackluster job at all three.

Think of it like driving a motorcycle with a sidecar. All three tires need to be filled with air, or else you’re in for a bumpy ride (at best), or a complete wreck (at worst). Keep all three tires maintained, however, and you’re out for a smooth, exhilarating journey. Metal Guitar Academy books and courses are like your sidehacking pit crew - they know how to keep all three wheels in tip-top shape, and they want you to win!

Audio & Video Evidence

(or, “Does This Guy Really Know What He’s Talking About?”)

I encourage you to read all about my experience and background in the Bio section, but yes - you can rest assured that I’m the guy you want to be learning Rock & Metal guitar from. Many guitar instructors walk the walk...but can they shred the shred? You be the judge! For full transparency, here's AmpL SampL, a full-length album with two tracks from each of the six Brett Miller guitar records...

...plus a few videos: one “shred étude” called Rise of the Guilds”, and a couple of “off-the-cuff” improv jams that I recorded recently for fun (in the Shred Shed!)

Guitar charlatans lurk around every corner, both online and in your local music shop. You're right to be mistrustful at first - there's a lot of "ripping off" going on in the world of guitar instruction, more so than ever before. If I were you, I wouldn't automatically trust someone to teach me either - so hopefully these records and videos can help to establish my professional bona fides when it comes to teaching you!

So, To Recap...

...if you’re an aspiring guitarist, and you want a beginner’s book that

then Beginner Guitar: No Wimps! is it!

Help me get this book into the hands of every new guitar player on the planet by sharing this Campaign around!

About Brett (Get to Know the Guy You'll Be Learning From!)

Yes, this should be in the "Bio" section, but I wanted to include pics and stuff because it’s more fun!

Become a Psychonaut, and take a brief excursion through my professional and personal life:

Age: 38

Age in Guitar Years: 28

When I first started playing guitar, my biggest influence was “Weird Al” Yankovic. For that I’m fortunate, because Al’s a great songwriter, and he’s always had great musicians in his band. Soon though, I wanted to be Angus Young from AC/DC. I heard a Joan Jett cover of “Dirty Deeds” on the radio, and then my brother got the real version on cassette. It was all over from there. I was also very into Garbage Pail Kids. Which I still am.

Garbage Pail Kids rule.
Garbage Pail Kids rule.

Computer games (current then, but considered “old school” now) were another big interest and inspiration. Music has always been "environmental" to me; in other words, when writing, it often feels as if I'm invoking a certain time and place - not so much an action or narrative (like scoring a certain scene in a movie), but rather an environment or setting. Older computer games, which required a bit more imagination, may have contributed to this.

Old School.
Old School.

Skip ahead to around 2010, and I became a video game composer myself, creating original soundtracks for three games - two of them published by Namco/Bandai:

Mission accomplished.

Here’s the MGA logo, made up of a photo collage from all the classic arcade machines at Funspot in New Hampshire, where I just spent a couple of days:

The moral? Don’t “outgrow” the interests you had as a kid - they'll enrich your life (and your music) as an adult!

Metal & Classical

As an adolescent, I started to get obsessed with virtuoso guitar players and Metal. A partial list of influences:

Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Testament, Exodus, Corrosion of Conformity, Pestilence, Pantera, Coroner, Carcass, Meshuggah, Yngwie Malmsteen, Dream Theater, Symphony X, Cynic, Greg Howe, George Lynch, Al DiMeola, Morbid Angel, King Diamond / Mercyful Fate, Death, Nevermore, Tony MacAlpine, and too many more to mention...

A parallel interest in classical music developed at around the same time, and sparked my (continuing) interest in classical and fingerstyle guitar:

A partial list of composers that became musical influences:

Bach, Sibelius, Vaughan-Williams, Hindemith, Frank Zappa, Takemistsu, Scriabin, Mahler, Stravinsky, Ravel, Schoenberg, Palestrina, Telemann, Beethoven, Haydn, Henry Mancini, Gustav Holst, and many more...

Berklee College of Music

After deciding to devote my life’s work to music & Metal, I attended Berklee College of Music in Boston. There were a lot of great classes, teachers, and people there - too many to get into now - so instead, here are some places around there where I used to eat:

Boston is good for the Belly.

My degree from Berklee is in Classical Composition, and it was a great experience overall. Speaking of composing, here’s a short piano piece, written recently as a Bonus for the Oath Of Dagon record:

ORACUL

I’ve had a lifelong interest in the unknown, especially the unanswered questions regarding ancient history and the origins of civilization. Consequently, I and some colleagues decided to create a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the study of these matters.

It’s called the Organization for the Research of Ancient Cultures (ORACUL), and we’re right now organizing a two-week educational tour of Egypt. If you’re interested in the scientific debate surrounding the age of high civilizations (we contend that it’s very old, like before the ice age), then check out ORACUL here.

I’ve left out all the bad stuff that I’ve gone through, not because it never happens, but because screw that stuff. Music, family, friends, fun & adventure - that’s what I’d like my Biography to be remembered for, and for my life to be increasingly focused on. Thanks for reading - now, get to some backing!
