Outcry Theatre is producing Carlos Murillo's dark play or stories for boys for the 2012 Dallas fringe festival, Watertower Theatre's Out of the Loop. It has already been accepted to the festival, but in order to produce it, we need YOUR help to raise additional funds. As a part of the festival, we will not make any money from ticket sales, so this Kickstarter campaign is essential for funding our show.
The performance dates and times are:
- Friday, March 2 at 8:00 pm
- Saturday, March 3 at 2:00 pm
- Sunday, March 4 at 5:00 pm
- Saturday, March 10 at 8:00 pm
dark play follows the story of a brilliant but desperately lonely teen, Nick (played by Adam Garst), who discovers the intoxicating pleasures of creating fake online personas, playing games with faceless strangers. Nick stumbles across the words, “I want to fall in love,” on the online profile of another teen, Adam (played by Jacob Aaron Cullum). Adam’s “gullibility” intrigues Nick , and he sets out to create the girl of Adam’s dreams, Rachel (played by Lila Flores). But when Adam insists on meeting Rachel, Nick has to invent new rules for his game, with catastrophic and thrilling consequences.
dark play is simultaneously poetic and gritty, hilarious and deadly serious. Fast-paced, penetrating, and intense, dark play is an alarming dark ride through teenage self-discovery and sexuality.
The thrilling story, stellar performances, exciting staging, and bold direction will make the production unique and compelling.
WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?
- PERFORMANCE RIGHTS. In order to produce the play, performance rights need to be licensed from Dramatists Play Service, Inc. This fee, which is $75 per performance, ensures that the author Carlos Murillo gets paid for his work.
- COSTUMES. Costume designer Justin Locklear will need some money to allow him to be creative in his design process.
- SCENERY. Any set we can afford will be because of your support.
- POCKET PROJECTOR. The ambitious projection design will not be achievable without it.
- PAYING THE ACTORS AND CREW. Our cast and crew are generously doing the show for free, but we would like to give them a small stipend to help pay for their gas.

ABOUT THE OUT OF THE LOOP FESTIVAL
The Out of the Loop Fringe Festival began in 2002 as a way for WaterTower Theatre to produce new and challenging works with a contemporary edge, and was designed to provide opportunities for other existing and emerging theatre, dance, and music companies and artists in the region to present work that may vary in form and presentation from their typical content. In addition, WaterTower wanted to provide a forum that supported artistic risk, which may not always be possible in a typical subscription-based scenario. WaterTower hoped that appearing together in a festival atmosphere, these companies could provide the North Dallas and surrounding area with a diverse range of artistic endeavors. The Festival typically hosts around 20 organizations presenting over 50 individual performances and drawing between 3,000 and 5,000 arts lovers each year. The Out of the Loop Fringe Festival has also received a Special Citation from the Dallas-Fort Worth Theatre Critics Forum for providing opportunities to new and emerging companies and playwrights.
The way Kickstarter works is all or nothing. If we don't raise our goal of $2,000, we don't get anything. However, if we exceed our goal, we get to keep the total amount raised. So help us propel past our goal and allow us to better pay our cast and crew.
