About

What are we building?

We're building a desktop application that let's you send files over the internet or over your local network. It will work on Mac, Windows, and Linux. It's a big deal because it's the first easy to use tool that's unlimited and free. Send as many files as you want, as big as you want, all free. There's nothing like it out there.

We'll be charging for a super-secure version that has end-to-end encryption, which means that no one (not even us) can know what you're sending.

Why are we building it?

Sending small files for free is easy - use email.

Sending medium size files for free is easy - there are lots of programs out there.

What's missing is a FREE service to send really big files, like video footage, photo collections, long audio recordings, and big documents. We wanted to send a 40GB Linux virtual machine from one computer to another and we couldn't find a good tool for it, so we're building one.

All the file-sending tools we've tried suffer from fatal flaws: they can't handle big files, they're unreliable, are a pain to use, or transfer slowly. We'll have none of those problems: your transfers will be easy, work every time, and be incredibly fast.

Who will use it?

People will use it for their big personal files. Professionals who deal in video, sound, and photographs will love it too, along with engineers and developers.

The secure version will be popular in the law, accounting, finance, and medical professions.

How does it work?

The main technology than enables this is peer-to-peer (P2P) technology, similar to that used by Skype and Bittorrent. With P2P, the bytes are transferred directly from sender to recipient, instead of through a server in between, like a traditional client-server model.

Client-server is easy to build, but the problem is that you have to pay to host lots of servers, pay for the bytes being transferred, and you have to limit the transfer rate to offer everyone good service.

Peer-to-peer is tricky to build, but we know how to build it, and it has serious advantages for big file transfer: it's very inexpensive to operate because you don't have to pay for the bytes transferred, it can work more easily through firewalls, and the transfer rate can be as fast as possible.

Features

  • Blazing Speed - Transfer as fast as your hardware allows, over the internet or your local network.
  • Auto-Resume - If your transfer is interrupted, it will automatically resume, even if you restart your computer.
  • Return Receipts - Track every step of a transfer until it arrives.
  • Send Folders, No Zipping - Your files and folders arrive ready to access.
  • No Account Needed - You don't need an account or password to send. Same goes for your recipients.
  • Request Files Too - Click Request Files in the app, and your recipient gets a link to an upload pad that sends files back to you.

Progress so Far

We built a prototype and did a 1-week test with 1000 users. 38% of people who visited our website downloaded the tool and loved it. Over a terabyte of data was sent and almost everyone who received files installed the app afterwards. After a few weeks our servers started to crash because we could not handle the load. And, despite the prototype having bugs, our user-base grew organically 6.5% per week. Some other metrics from our test -

Funnel

  • 38% of website visitors download the app
  • 3.1% of app users upgrade to pro account ($10/mo for secure sending)

Website Visitor Locations

  • 49% North America
  • 20% Europe
  • 18% Asia
  • 3.4% Oceania

Transfer Sizes

  • Largest: 107 GB
  • Smallest: 14 B
  • Average: 938 MB
  • Median: 24 MB

How will the funds be used?

Now that we proved the tool is in demand, we need to build a professional-quality version that's bug-free and works on all commonly-used versions of Mac, Windows, and Linux. We also need to build our servers in a way that can scale beyond a few thousand users.

We will be doing a lot of the programming ourselves, but there are some parts we need help with. First of all, none of the KickStarter money will go to us. It will all go to pay for the following.

  • $12,000 for server time. We are using Amazon's EC2 infrastructure to host our server code. We want to raise enough money to handle 1 million users for 3 years. We need servers to maintain open socket connections to every client, authenticate users, and to coordinate transfers. Each server can handle 250,000 users and costs about $1000 per year.
  • $25,000 for a programmer consultant who's done cross-platform desktop app deployment. This person will set up our build system so that our C++ common code can interface with native code for each OS. This person will also help us write the native user-interface code.
  • $25,000 for a programmer consultant who's build scalable servers before. This person will help us architect our servers so that they can scale to millions of users, and help write the Java/Scala code to do so.
  • $5000 for operating system user interface widgets. We need some specialists to build user-interface code for us that will let us do, for example, right-clicking on files in Windows.
  • $5000 for a security expert to go over the gritty details of our security model to make sure our encryption methodology is sound.
  • $5000 for a graphic designer. Amit is already a great interaction designer. We also need a graphic designer to help us make the tool look and feel beautiful.
