The Freedom From Fuel World Tour will be an expedition; not a voyage into the unknown wilderness, but one toward people and communities world-wide. On June 5th, Paul Doffing and Jen Tillman will hit the road on a multi-year international bicycle-music tour. The focus of the trip will be on discovering and promoting a mindset of sustainability and reduced dependence on fossil fuels while sharing music globally. As we pedal our bicycles through communities and share music, meals and shelter, we'll get a better look at this planet and work to chronicle our experiences through photos, video and writing.
We're kicking off the tour with the release of Paul's new album, Songs from the (quaking) Heart, which contains several movement building and protest songs written specifically in regards to the environmental and socioeconomic issues we face as a people. The album will be released on May 30, 2015, but you can get an advance copy in the rewards section on this page.
This won't be our first long distance bike trip, as we've both cycled long distances in the past, and, in fact, we met on bikes! Jen and her friend Shaughn teamed up to ride across the United States in 2012 and, one day in central Montana, Paul, who was also on a cross country bike tour, pedaled up behind them. The two of us have been together ever since that day. Paul has continued music-touring by bicycle, logging 8,000 miles to more than 100 shows since 2012, while Jen has obtained her master's degree in Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University. When we're in one place, we're both avid bicycle commuters and cycling advocates, and we founded of the Ames Bicycle Coalition in Ames, Iowa.
One big goal of the trip this year is to put on community oriented shows, so we're working with environmental, local foods, and cycling advocacy groups to put on performances at non-traditional venues including small farms, food and bike co-ops, apiaries, and community arts venues. We're excited to share with you what we find at these places through our tour blog at www.freedomfromfueltour.com. We have about 20 shows booked so far, and will continue to book more shows over the next few months. If you know of a group or place we should visit, we'd love to hear about it!
The full scope of the trip is not yet determined, but here is what we have planned so far:
Summer and Fall 2015: Leave Ames, IA on June 5, and bike throughout the midwest, up to Duluth, MN and along the south shore of Lake Superior, the south through Michigan to Chicago. From there we'll loosely follow the Mississippi River south to Memphis, then head east to the Carolinas.
Winter 2015: Live and work on a small, sustainably-focused farm in the Carolinas
Spring 2016: Once the ground thaws, head north to the NY area, playing shows along the way
Summer 2016: Head to Europe! We'll take the Freedom From Fuel Tour internationally for the first time.
Beyond 2016: Take the Freedom From Fuel Tour to South America, Asia, and beyond!
Though we're using our savings and the revenue from the shows we play along the route to fund the tour, we need your support to undertake a trip of this magnitude. Your money will go towards: airfare, international postage to ship bicycles and gear, health insurance, lots of food, and bicycle repairs/parts as we make the trip.
Thanks for checking out our campaign! Don't forget to grab an awesome reward and to share this page with your friends!
Risks and challenges
The tour will be our longest yet, so it is certain to be challenging. We're fully invested in making the journey. We're pursuing international partners to help ensure a successful trip abroad.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
