A documentary exploring the world of movie poster art, past and present, the artists who create it and the fans who collect it.
We're here to tell the story of movie art...with a movie.
"Twenty-Four by Thirty-Six" is a film that explores the world of movie poster art, past and present; the artists who create it, companies that commission it, galleries that display it, and collectors and fans who hang it.
We'll be interviewing a number of high profile key art personalities from the 70s and 80s, including legendary film marketing director, Tony Seiniger, the man behind the inception of the original "Jaws" poster. We'll be speaking with Andrea Alvin, a long time member of the film marketing community and wife of the late, great John Alvin, creator of such iconic works as the original one-sheets for "Blade Runner", E.T.", "Blazing Saddles", "Gremlins", and countless more. Placing a special focus on John and his career we'll ask the question of where traditional illustrated posters disappeared to, and why.
Moving into this decade, we've been interviewing and following several modern screenprint artists, in various stages of their careers, through the process of producing illustrated movie poster art and speaking with them about their influences, their challenges, dealing with studios, print houses, and galleries. We've conducted interviews with independent print house Skuzzles to pick their brains about why illustrated art is so important to movie fans. We've visited Mondo in Austin, Texas to discuss the enormous impact that they've had on bringing illustrated film art back into the limelight. We'll even be profiling some collectors of movie poster art and speaking with them about its importance, how to store it and how to frame it (yep. we're going so far as to visit a frame manufacturer to get an inside look on custom framing movie art).
To top it all off, we're putting together a one of a kind gallery show featuring a ton of original posters from some really incredible artists.
It's a hugely ambitious project, but it's a story that needs to be told. And we intend to tell the hell out of it.
Where are we now?
As things stand now we're a good portion of the way through production. We've conducted a slew of interviews so far and have lined up a great deal more to be knocked out in coming months. The director and crew have turned their wallets inside out to push ahead as far as possible and we've gotten a great big piece of the story locked down that we're very excited to complete. Our post-production crew members are lined up and ready to roll on editing, motion graphics design, coloring, and sound editing as soon as we wrap production.
How can you help?
We're looking to fans of film and art alike to help us reach our goal of $25,000. This funding will be allocated toward travel expenses for the remaining, more remote interviews with artists and gallery owners as well as toward post-production and administrative costs like insuring the film for exhibition in festivals, film festival submission fees, and marketing materials. We will also be using some of the funding for licensing rights for some very exciting original art that we have in store.
What kind of rad stuff are we going to give you?
We're happy that you asked! Because we've got a ton of rad stuff to give away to our supporters and we want to show it off.
Above and beyond the usual DVDs, Blu-Rays, Digital Copies of the film, "Thank You"s, etc. We've got:
And seeing as this is a documentary about Movie Poster Art we've commissioned a couple of up and coming, incredible artists to design some limited edition screenprints obtainable only through pledging to this campaign.
Oh, yeah...and you could be in the movie.
You read right - you could be in the movie. And not just your name in the credits (though we are offering that too). We want to give movie poster fans and collectors a chance to appear in the film. Simply head over to our website - www.twentyfourbythirtysix.com and upload a short video of you showing off your favorite movie poster and we might choose you to be among several of the submissions that appear in the end credits of the film! There's no pledge necessary, but we can't make any of it happen if we don't reach our goal.
So help us out (have we told you how amazing you look today, by the way)! Pledge (I don't know if it's something you've done with your hair or what, but wow, really, you look incredible)! Spread the word to other fans and collectors, or even just people who complain about how bad modern Hollywood posters are who you think might be interested in something new! Together we can knock this flick out of the park and make the fun, insightful and entertaining exploration of the poster art world that movie-lovers and art-lovers deserve!

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
"Challenges" are what our challenges call trying to lift themselves up off of the ground after we've beaten them to a pulp.
That said, any experienced filmmaker will tell you that the biggest challenge, even after completing a film, is to find distribution. We've got a film festival timeline and schedule already prepared, a marketing strategy in place, and we're going to ride this film across North America and fight tooth and nail to get it the attention that it deserves.
We're experienced filmmakers with a previous effort having been picked up for broadcast and distribution by one of the bigger networks in Canada. We've worked on little to no budget in the past and been able to hold our heads high after a long struggle. We will complete this film, and it will kick serious ass. The funding from this campaign effort is to expand our reach, allowing us to travel further, conduct more interviews, and potentially play in more festivals world-wide. We will make the film about poster art that not not only has us fans talking, but that has the rest of the film-loving world taking notice.
