POW!'s mission is to provide access to and education about handmade pottery to a wide range of people through its mobile gallery and participant workshops.
Where Will My Contributions Go?
Through KickStarter we are raising funds to buy a step van (like the Chevrolet shown below) to house our mobile project space. We are all makers in clay, and believe that fine craft makes people happy. We want to share the joys of making with a larger audience. We'll drive our van to public schools, community centers, and other places currently lacking in access to the teaching of craft. We'll give hands-on workshops, and encourage new audiences, both young and old, to see, touch and experience well-made functional ceramics, made by a wide-range of contemporary artists.
Art makes us happy. Beautifully made functional pottery stands at the nexus of excellent design, fine art, and careful craftsmanship. We need the objects in our lives to work efficiently and well. The practice of pottery makes each of us a designer, thinking through the way an object will be used to imagine its best form. Careful craftsmanship yields well-made objects; we should consume less, and value what we possess more. Clay is an ideal medium for teaching skills and concepts we need today, and in the future. At POW! we are dedicated to promoting and teaching craft, art and design.
Goals: At POW! our goals are to:
1. Create a mobile educational gallery to transport a broad range of contemporary functional pottery directly to communities which might not otherwise have access to fine craft.
2. Provide workshops for folks of all ages to give the pleasure of making to a wide audience.
3. Strengthen the arts community through collaborations amongst artists, communities, and between arts organizations.

Our first undertaking is the Cup Exchange, a collaborative project. Participants decorate a cup, and in exchange receive a finished cup made by a previous collaborator. The Cup Exchange will begin in November at Holyoke Community College in western Massachusetts, followed by appearances in the Boston area at MFA Boston, and NCECA in Providence.
Why Support POW! Pots On Wheels?
Our purpose is to promote potters and the teaching of clay to a broader community. At POW! we encourage people young and old to love clay. We love what we do and we'd like more people to have the chance to do it too. We need your help to make it happen.
Do we have Stretch Goals? Indeed we do!
$15,000 buys our used but still pretty good truck.
$5,000 renovates it, including painting, insulation (this is New England after all), interior walls and additional windows.
$8,000 gets us beautiful cabinets for displaying and storing work.
$2,500 for solar lighting system.
$5,000 for the teapot on top!
Risks and challenges
We are a group of experienced artist educators, so the execution of the teaching/workshop aspect of our project poses few challenges. We've partnered with a wonderful non-profit with many years of experience in promoting craft in the NewEngland area, so we feel well supported as we prepare to tackle the complex problems posed by operating a small non-profit enterprise. We believe that parking our van in downtown Boston and Providence may be a challenge, but we intend to surmount it by thorough advance planning!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
