My name is Mark Reiter and I'm an engineer and producer based near Washington, DC. In the early part of the decade, I crossed paths with an extraordinary band comprised of extraordinary people. Their songs were 1.5 minute hymns about DC punk rock, pirates, laziness and the video game Doom. Nobody at the time was making music that combined this subject matter, this level of intensity and this kind of pure and unapologetic innocence. They were called the A.K.s and they were unique in every way. We worked together, as time allowed, until the early part of this year when one of their singers was tragically killed in a terrorist attack on a cafe in Kabul, Afghanistan.
His name was Alexi Petersen. He was 29 years old.
This project is a recorded memorial for Alexi. It is also a love letter to the A.K.s from their peers in the music scene. It is my hope that the project serves as both a permanent epitaph for a life lost too soon and as an introduction to a band that was fiercely loved by the small cult of people who had the good fortune to hear them.
The record will be released on colored vinyl and digital download and feature A.K.s songs performed by The Pietasters, Two Man Advantage, Daycare Swindlers, Supreme Commander, The Overprivileged, Hudson Falcons, Walk the Plank, The Idle Gossip and a few surprises. A group of recording and mixing engineers are dedicating their time and attention to the project which is slated to be complete by the early part of 2015.
Risks and challenges
Pressing vinyl is not a exact science. Demand is currently very high and there are only a limited number of presses in the world. Turn times can vary and delivery is sometimes delayed. We'll keep our contributors updated with great frequency as the project progresses and manage expectations accordingly.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
