This means we actually get the complete budget for the film we originally envisioned. £4000 actually meant trimming some costs down. This stretch goal means we don't have to skimp on anything! More gore, more melting!
This means even more money could go into the vital departments, Jayne gets more blood, we get better sets and even more awesome haz-mat costumes. Every single penny raised over £4,000 goes into what you see on screen. More money means a better film!
£5,500 and beyond
This means we can afford a complete festival run, we've budgeted for the core few but we could smash them all with this. We can make DCPs to send off to festivals too. It also means we can hire an even better camera too!
Kat and her eco-warrior friends embark on a mission to expose the international bio-chemistry company, Ring-Amnion, as liars after a tip-off that they ran an animal testing lab - despite their public profile claiming otherwise.
The gang, and Kat's 20,000 blog followers, are eager to find out what Ring-Amnion have been hiding as they break into an old building, but they aren't prepared for what they find inside...
Here's Kat updating her followers on the plan...
Now, if all of Lab Rats was a Kat's Wholesome Planet vlog, we might not need a budget at all, but we're planning a 12-15 minute, blood-soaked, see-everything, high def short!
Unfortunately, all doesn't go well for Kat and the others. Whilst Kat's tip-off seems to have been right, animals are't the only things Ring-Amnion are willing to test on. This is the where Jayne, our Special Makeup Effects & Practical FX Designer and Steve, our Visual Effects Designer, have some really grotesque deaths and gore up their sleeves!
We are great believers in practical effects and want Lab Rats to be a real splatter showcase, featuring exploding bodies, melting faces, oozing wounds and blood. Buckets and buckets of blood! And practical effects combined with VFX means we can push these effects to their bloodiest potential. Steve and Jayne have collaborated on numerous films and have learned to design and plan effects together to produce the perfect balance between practical and CGI effects. With Steve we can make the impossible, possible.
As Lab Rats is a body horror, the effects are the backbone of the film and the materials needed to make our characters ooze and explode are the main reason we need your help!

Another great example of Jayne and Steve's work can be seen in the award winning Cannibals and Carpetfitters, starring one of our cast Darren Maffucci as the unrecognisable Charlie, watch it here: http://vimeo.com/86968055
David Wayman is the writer and director of Lab Rats. He has written, directed and shot many short films, including 6 Shooter which was shortlisted as a finalist in the Shortcuts to Hell competition, premiered at Film 4's Frightfest and screened on the Horror Channel. www.dwyz.me
Lauren Parker, the producer, has produced a range of shorts, music videos, promos and even feature films. A self confessed horror geek, horror is Lauren's true passion and she is delighted that 2 of her films have been shortlisted for Shortcuts to Hell, as well as showing at horror festivals around the world. www.teamchameleon.com

Steve Askey is the visual effects designer. He has worked on a wide spectrum of productions, conjuring up everything from killer worms and burning zombies to gore explosions and chopped off noses. See some of his work here : https://vimeo.com/76482857
Adam Whitehouse is our cinematographer, he has years of freelance camera work both creative and corporate and has held contracts with the likes of Polydor and Hilton.
As you can see we've already cast our lead Kat with Teya Simone, she wowed us on 6 Shooter and we can't wait to work with her again. As previously mentioned we also have Cannibals and Carpetfitters star Darren Maffucci on board too. We'll release more casting news in regular updates to the campaign.
All of the team are huge horror fans, so Lab Rats is a real passion project for everyone. We are all so excited about the project that every penny raised will go on the screen, all the cast and crew are working for free.
Although we are clearly influenced by films like Re-Animator, The Thing, The Fly, Bio-Cop and so on with this film, we know we can bring something new to the body horror genre with our splatter filled short. We just need your help to make this film a reality. We've always self-funded our films, but this time we want to really push our effects and our film beyond our bank balances.
where the money goes
All cast and crew are working for free on Lab Rats, so every penny raised will go towards the production and you'll be able to see all the money on the screen.
A big chunk of our budget will go towards our effects. Jayne is giving up weeks of prep time for free but the actual materials needed to bring her sick fantasies to life do cost money. As we said, melting people doesn't come cheap!
We are also building some of our science lab and Ring-Amnion HQ sets from scratch. We have some great locations that allow us free reign to create unique sets and really bring the Lab Rats world to life. But we need a budget for set construction and production design.
Then there is the usual equipment hire... and we have some really interesting make up and costume designs to transform our cast into eco-warriors. We also have haz-mat costumes to buy - which you could be wearing in the film yourselves if you pick the reward!
We have lots of rewards to choose from, whether you just want to see the finished film, or be a part of it! We have limited cameo appearances and the chance for your name to be featured on badges seen in the film. We are also very happy to have an exclusive mini comic with a prequel storyline that explains just how Kat and her friends end up at the Ring-Amnion building. This is illustrated by comic book artist Luke Parker, check out his work here http://www.artofparker.com/
So check them out, and help spread the word. We can't make Lab Rats without the support of horror fans like you, help us on our journey and hopefully we'll be watching it at a horror festival with you very soon!
Risks and challenges
We are already well into the process of meticulously planning every part of the film, from set builds through to festival entries. We have complete faith in the cast and crew to deliver Lab Rats!
The only real risk is time for our team to pour into the project, as we all work either freelance or other jobs, a sudden spike in day job demand could throw a spanner in the works, however, we have allowed lots of prep time and considered this in the time plan.
We're all experienced film-makers, who have faced all kinds of problems during various productions. So hopefully there aren't many problems we don't already know the solution for.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
