UPDATE March 16, 2019
We hit the $4500 mark today, with just 70 minutes to go! That means ALL 9 PINS have been unlocked and will be made. Some backers increased their pledges at the last minute to take us over that milestone mark, so I want to say a BIG THANK YOU to them and all backers who supported this project. I'll send a backer email in an hour when the campaign officially ends.
I’m Julia, a comics artist and illustrator who happens to be a big silent movie fan.
In the 1910s and 20s, millions of filmgoers were dazzled by the magic of the silver screen. All the major genres were represented: from slapstick comedies, to lush fantasies, sweeping dramas, and goofy romcoms, you could take your pick.
After "the talkies" premiered, the old silents were all but forgotten. Quite a few have been lost forever due to the decomposition of the nitrate film stock itself. Thanks to the efforts of film preservationists, a few gems have survived into our time. I myself got into silent films because I ran across a copy of “The Sheik” at my library. I was mesmerized at this little window into 100 years ago. After that, I was hooked.
The idea for this project rose from a desire to call more attention to the talented actors and film makers of early American cinema. I have narrowed it down to nine stars whose storytelling abilities, innovation, and perseverance have shaped the world of the silver screen. It should be noted that America in the 1920s, unfortunately, had some antiquated ideas on women and people of color. To counteract this, I made a special effort to include actors from these groups in order to highlight their contributions. I hope to continue this mission in future KS projects.
All pins will be hard enamel and measure 1.5”-2” (about 38-51 mm) tall. Each pin will have two rubber backers for stability. I chose a copper metal and sepia tone color scheme to recall the charm and distinct look of the old nitrate films. Some of the pins will include spot white details that are added on top of the finished pin.
The initial goal will be to fund the making of the Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin pins. After the initial goal is reached, the remaining seven actors will become available as we hit stretch goal milestones. In order, the actors are: Josephine Baker, Harold Lloyd, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks Sr., Anna May Wong, Rudolph Valentino, and Clara Bow.
The reward tiers offer the pins at a discounted rate. Once funded, I will have these pins for sale on my Etsy shop and at conventions, but the price will be higher. It helps me out if you back these pins now, and it leads to savings for you!
(note: the final versions may very slightly in color or outline. I might still tweak the color choices slightly before sending to the printer, but the basic image will remain unchanged.)
If we exceed $4500
If the project exceeds all these stretch goals, I’ll use the extra funds to upgrade my packaging and equipment if the quantity of orders justifies it. Currently I’ve allotted just enough funds for the most bare bones packaging (business card size pin backers, plastic baggie, “thank you” note, and bubble mailer) but I would love to provide higher quality materials (like a thicker backer card with a premium finish), to create a more memorable presentation and ultimately a better experience for you.
If we really exceed expectations, and if there’s interest, I’ll either begin to offer silver color variants or introduce new actors to the lineup… I’ll conduct a poll on social media so you, the backers, can help decide.
Backers can also add a sheet of stickers to their order for $4 extra. Click the green "Back this Project" or "Manage Your Pledge" button, select a reward level, then increase the pledge amount by $4 (or $8 for 2 sheets, etc.). You'll receive your stickers at the same time you receive your pins.
After the Kickstarter, these stickers will be available in my Etsy shop, but the price will increase.
Budget and Shipping
In preparing this Kickstarter project, I have researched the costs extensively and done my due diligence in finding the best price for vendors and materials. Compared to other enamel pin projects, my initial goal is on the higher side. This is partly because I am choosing to use a middleman vendor for my pins instead of working directly with a factory. As a first time pin designer, I feel that I need the extra guidance that a middleman can provide in terms of preparing the files, choosing materials, and communicating effectively with the factory. I’m also allowing extra funds in each category to act as a cushion against unexpected costs.
As for shipping, I will be using United States Postal Service (USPS) First Class rate and have estimated shipping costs based on the weight of the pins and geographic location. For US backers, the price of shipping is built into the backer tiers so they don’t need to pay an extra shipping fee. Canada and International backers will have part of shipping built into the backer price, but will still need to pay an additional shipping fee.
Unfortunately shipping will be a bit expensive for Canada and worldwide backers. In the future, I plan on looking into third party fulfillment services but for now, as a first time KS project creator and small time artist, I thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.
I’ve got the art ready to go, just need to place the order with the vendor. This is a tentative timeline with plenty of wiggle room built in for delays. If funded, I’ll send a backer survey to get everyone’s pin choices and mailing addresses. I’ll keep you posted on any news or delays as I learn of them.

Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarter project and my first time making enamel pins. However, I have been selling online since 2011 and have years of experience in fulfilling orders.
I’ve done thorough research on the costs and taken precautions to make sure we have a smooth process, but some bumps in the road are to be expected. I will post updates as I receive them.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
