Hi! My name is Willow Scrivner…
This is my story, this is my song
Music is my redemption, my desire, my sermon, my demon, my hymn. It is my secret, my memory, my dream, my skin and my sleep.
Music is my mother, and my father. I am a daughter of music.
I am a daughter of the church. Of ministers, missionaries, tent raisers and gospel callers. A daughter of healers, worshippers, snake-handlers, gardeners, and keepers of faith. I am a daughter of Oklahoma, and of Japan.
A daughter of the dust bowl; and the American west.
I am a daughter of words.
I am in love with the feel of them leaving my tongue and lips, the way my voice almost becomes foreign to me, and the vibration of a guitar across my chest. I’m addicted to the feeling of sound, like light leaving my body.
Music and words have been a part of me from the beginning, since before I knew they were there. Like unborn children or lovers not yet known, they were lying in wait.
I write because my head would be too cluttered otherwise, because I need to remember, and to forgive. Each song I write stays with me, leaves an imprint of where I was and what I felt as it came. Their flavors stay on my tongue even as years pass.
My songs are like memories; like the whispers of ghosts.
My album, Radio Sky, is my attempt to capture the lush, lullaby-hushed, lost, circus-spinning feel of the Garden. A collection of songs that is fresh with new skin, but whose lineage can be traced through my past records.
I am a daughter of music.
WHAT'S BEEN DONE!
I’ve recorded and released a new album with my band, The Embers called Radio Sky.
Radio Sky is a collection of songs that is fresh with new skin, but whose lineage can be traced through my past records.
These songs have been sweetly stitched together over the past several years…they’re inspiration lies in family, loss, religion, traveling the west in the backseat of an old ‘70’s station wagon, and the saving grace of old records and tube radios.
I am so excited and so proud of this record!
More so than any I have done so far…Radio Sky is my breath, my heart, and my memories…layers of history telling my story.
WHAT WE’RE DOING? WHERE WE’RE GOING?!
So, now that the record is done, it’s time to take it on the road!
But I don’t want to do just any old tour…
When I was a little girl growing up, my papa was a preacher-man. As a child, the Church seemed kind of like the military…but instead of going where Uncle Sam told you, you went where God told you.
My father drove our little family through the desert searching, seeking, preaching and singing.
On this tour I will be retracing the steps (and highways!) to all the places of my father’s ministry.
From Yakima, Washington to Lawton, Oklahoma, and back again, the band and I will play in each town where my father preached when I was a child.
The tour will be called “Daughter Of A Preacher Man’.
This is my story. This is my song.
WHAT'S HAPPENING ALONG THE WAY?
I am a singer/songwriter - a storyteller.
I want to bring you into my story.
I want my memory to become your memory…the smell of church basement coffee, the weight of a hymnal; the echo of church bells, and the pounding of a pulpit; the low haunting wail of tornado sirens mixed with the warm, baked-dust smell of tube radios.
My search for manna, for memories will be your search.
I want to take you along with us from the rolling, brown hills of Yakima to the dry deserts of Nevada. Through the sticky, heady Oklahoma dustbowl, to the lush, green mountains of the North West.
To bring this story to life, we’re going to create a feature length documentary, ‘Daughter Of A Preacher Man’!
With the help of my sweet husband and guitar player, Kevin Wood, and lovely bass player, Bob Congleton,
I will be gathering footage of our journey along the way.
Telling my story. Singing my song.
But to do that, to take to the road, to capture these moments and miles and stories and songs the way I want to, with the filmmaker & people I want to, it takes money. To put it simply, I need your help!
WHAT WE NEED?!
Your generous donations will help us with the bare bones of this project…renting a reliable van, paying for gallons of gas, buying a good quality camcorder and covering the costs of editing by our talented filmmaker.
If we are able to raise more than the $6000, than WOOHOO!!! The tour and the film will be even more amazing!!
Your help will take us from Washington through Idaho, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and Oregon and get the new record, Radio Sky, into new hands in new cities!
We have all kinds of awards and gifts for your generosity and kindness…there is something for whatever fits your pocketbook and your heart!
The way Kickstarter works is that in order to receive funding for the project, I must reach my goal - $6,000 - by my deadline date, July 10th 2012.
If we don’t make our goal of $6000, we get nothing. No one is charged and no film is made.
And it would be so very sad!
This is by far the most ambitious—crazy—project I’ve ever attempted and it wouldn’t be possible without your help. I so appreciate your generosity. Every little bit helps: from donating dollars to sharing this link with your network of friends and family. Your generous spirit will be carried with me as I share Radio Sky.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for all your help and support. Thank you for helping this daughter of a preacher man tell her story, share her song.
