What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About

My daughter and I created the Connectimals together. . Kids of all ages and even adults love stuffed plush animals, but what could be done to make them even more enjoyable and fun.  We took 2 of her animals and made their heads, paws, ears and tails removable and re-attachable with magnets sewn withing the cloth of the animals.  Our first 2 were a pig and a frog.  Her and my son love putting pig ears on a frog and frog feet on a pig.  They are a combination of a stuffed animal, game, puzzle, action figure and collectible.  Our hopes are to make our Connectimals available for everyone to enjoy and collect.  We now have 5 prototypes including a bear, giraffe and duck also.  After competing on ABC’s The Toy Box with our invention and doing well we have had many compliments and people asking for our invention.  We sent one of our prototypes to a plush toy maker for them to make a professional manufactured prototype.  Once we approve their prototype we  are hoping to get the funds to make all 5 of our characters (pig, frog, duck, bear and giraffe).  The minimum order is 500 of each and times that by the 5 characters.  The total will come to between $20,000.00 and $25,000.00 to make all 2500 finished characters.  We have the audience and momentum right now because of being on TV to sell these first 5 characters in series 1 and we plan to use the profits to manufacture a series 2 of 5 new characters. Please help us make our dream come true and Thank You for taking time to read this.

Risks and challenges

We were on The Toy Box and received some great feedback from the mentors on there on how to make our toy safe and better. We passed the mentor judges saying that "we met a need in the toy aisle".
The magnets we use were their biggest concern. It's the high powered earth magnets that cause the issue if swallowed. We are going to use lesser powered magnets similar to refrigerator magnets. CSPC safety standards say a flux index of 50 kG2 mm2 or less are safe to use or bigger than 1 1/4" We are going to make them enclosed in the plush toy to ensure safety. Also we will make all parts big enough to not be able to be a choke hazard. The final product Connectimal may be a little bigger than our homemade prototypes just to make all parts (ear, tails and paws) bigger and safer
