Back From Hell is a CRPG Puzzle/Adventure game set in two worlds, a 15th Century Spanish hilltop town and a journey to the depths of Hell and back again.
A free-roaming adventure, controlled with either a control pad or WASD (not point and click). We use a system of digitization to create our characters, similar to games like Mortal Kombat, Back From Hell does not feature any nasty 90's FMV. The living world of the village and its surroundings serve only as a beginning to the story, only a tiny portion of the game. Most of the action in Back From Hell takes place in the depths of the afterlife.
In this abstract 2.5D game where real-world and abstract fantasy collides, you will fight for injustice your family has suffered, battle through the underworld fighting your inner demons and face those who seek to destroy you. You must be quick witted in the face of danger, make impossible decisions and deal with the aftershocks.
Back From Hell merges classic computer role playing game mechanics with point & click adventure style exploration, challenging environmental puzzles in the vein of MYST and like Planescape: Torment the narrative is formed by the choices you make and the consequences of your deeds.
Combat is reminiscent of Guardian Heroes where the player earns experience points during each encounter with a variety of statistics that can be upgraded as the game progresses.
- Dialogue driven story that is full of complex characters, branching paths, unique locations, tough moral choices and multiple conclusions
- A myriad of expansive environments to adventure in, explore and investigate
- Based both in the realms of the living and the dark depths of the afterlife
- First and third person puzzles that are both visually appealing and mentally taxing
- Stat based combat system with multiple attacks, weapons and magic with a varied cast of enemies

This is a world full of characters with personalities and agendas, conversations will be critical to solving multiple first or third person puzzles, presenting the player with many difficult ethical choices as the game evolves.
Back From Hell is a game set in 15th Century central Spain, the grip of the Inquisition is the source of fear among the people. Having suffered a sustained period of drought and rising taxes, it’s been a difficult year for the citizens of La Colina.
As a local farmer you have been crippled by the lack of rain and the ever growing presence of the inquisition. Your stores have been repeatedly plundered by the local guards and with little to no harvest it has been impossible to replenish your ever dwindling supplies. Despite begging for divine help your prayers go unanswered, you decide its time to look for alternative help.
A dangerous path that only leads to your untimely demise.
After arriving in hell, you meet with Lucifer himself and beg him to let you return to the world to avenge your families deaths. Your worthless offerings are of no value and he is unconvinced by your conviction or the constitution of your soul. He persuades you to undertake a series of challenges for his own personal pleasure and to assess your qualities as a demon of Hell itself.
During your time in Hell you will be set a series of tasks that will determine whether you have the lifeblood of a demon and whether you will ever return to the world to get your revenge or remain in the depths of Hell forever.
Logical thinking, information and observation will all be necessary to solve interconnected puzzles that take on many forms in the deep depths of Hell. Discover and interact with objects, hunt for environmental clues and when no obvious goal or objective is clear, creativity will be required.
With multiple ways of approaching problems, numerous consequences or rewards and a wide variety of interesting interfaces, we are sure Back From Hell will keep you guessing right until the very end.
A fast-paced, stats-based, visceral hack and slash action combat system which features wide array of weapons and an arsenal of deadly magical attacks for those who choose to develop their sorcery skills. Both strategy and fighting style are critical to gaining the upper hand in any confrontation so choose wisely before you decide to engage any potential foes.
Pepper your enemies with cursed arrows or rain down fire and brimstone but remember, if you ever cross paths with an unstoppable Demon, better hope you can charm your way out of a bloody end.
The final release of Back From Hell will be available for Windows, Mac, and Linux via direct download (DRM-free) and Steam.
Alpha and beta access will be available on Steam for Windows and for Mac too, we love consoles so watch this space for announcements.
Projects thrive with community support, an opportunity to get great feedback from people who care and allow us the time to mold Back From Hell into an unforgettable masterpiece.
The best place to bring us all together.
To build this unique, detailed, expansive backdrop with complex characters and a compelling story Back From Hell is being produced both digitally and physically to create a more photo-realistic and unique world. The process of digitizing characters is both complex and expensive. Creating props, making costumes, recording and editing are all labor-intensive and take hundreds of man hours to complete. These are the reasons why we are reaching out to you, together we can make Back From Hell an amazing experience.
Photoplay Games is an independent game studio located in Derby, UK. With extensive experience in Programming, Art, Animation, QA, Game Development, Project Management, Audio/Visual production and Design. We are completely self-funded and dedicated to developing CRPG games.
Working as an independent studio allows us to have full control over the entire project, we are able to work on every aspect of the game from animation, filming, prop design and music. We want to create games that engage the player, create the type of game and experiences that defined our generation with updated visuals and a modern twist.
The mastermind behind Photoplay Games is Baxter Lock, who for over a decade called Asia home. Working freelance on a diverse range of creative projects, Baxter decided to return to the UK and start his own studio and bring all of his ideas to life.

Risks and challenges
Making games is a complex process and we are an experienced team who will do whatever it takes to get the game finished . We spent several months prototyping every feature and concept, making sure we were able to accomplish every task to a schedule. However it is possible Back From Hell will take longer to develop than originally planned. Development time has its costs though, so the project taking significantly longer than planned may cause some financial strain, it's something we have considered and are fully prepared to take on the financial burden ourselves should that arise.
The truth is that we have invested so many hours, blood, sweat and tears and our private funds into this project, there simply is no way we will allow Back From Hell to fail.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
