What is GR8bit Live?
GR8bit Live!, (Grand Rapids, 8 bit, Live), started 3 years ago as an idea that came to me after a conversation with a 6th grade student of mine. This student was in the early stages of his battle with leukemia, (which is now in remission!!!!), and he mentioned that in his time at the local children's hospital, the entertainment options were either lacking or outdated. Since I happen to play in a video game cover band, I thought it would be great to put on a video game music concert where all proceeds go toward updating the video game equipment at the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital. After 2 successful years of having a video game music concert, it's time for the event to take its next step.
Why Should You Consider Donating?
This summer on July 11, at DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids, MI, GR8bit Live! 3 will happen. Instead of just being a video game music concert, we're looking to expand the event to also include plenty of casual gaming, both video and table top, as well as many gaming tournaments and competitions. In addition, we are reaching out to some of the best nerd paraphernalia vendors in the region to have a fantastic vendor hall. The best part? Admission will be absolutely FREE.
We figure that since we are asking you to help foot the bill for all of the expenses, then we should make this open to the public for no additional cost to you. In keeping with the charitable nature of past GR8bit Live! events, we will be accepting donations from attendees as they enter. These donations will go to the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital to purchase new video and board game equipment.
The lineup of musical acts we have coming this year is something you won't want to miss. The groups we have announced so far include: Super Guitar Bros., Playing with Power!, Knight of the Round, Mail Order Monsters, Gimmick!, My Parents Favorite Music, and Arc Impulse. There's something for everyone as many diverse styles will be represented. Each group has their own take on either video game tunes, or songs from other branches of the nerd kingdom. PLUS, as this campaign goes on, that list of musicians will only get bigger - not to mention the announcement of our special featured guest speaker panel. Trust us, you won't want to miss it.
If we can raise $10,000 then we will be able to rent out a much larger space, opening up opportunities for more vendors, gaming, and a larger music hall. Should we hit $15,000, then we will be able to fully fund all the expansions we have in mind. Any overage will be used as seed money for GR8bit Live! 4.
Should we start approaching either of these stretch goals, there will be an update post detailing how we are expanding the event.
Risks and challenges
One of the biggest risks is pulling off a convention of this magnitude. While it will be our first time trying to tackle this, we are well connected with leaders of other successful conventions and we already have a very large network of volunteers who are ready to go should this event get funded. We know that we will encounter some bumps in the road, but we are also confident that we have the level of professionalism required to handle what arises.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
