About this project
It doesn’t take long for a cheap 3D printer to lose its charm — when you take it out of the box, for instance, and realize you have to assemble a thousand pieces. Or when the nozzle clogs with plastic debris after just a few uses. Or when you realize the printer is too lightweight to print at high speeds. The fact is, most 3D printers under $500 contain flimsy plastic parts and experience technical failures all the time.
That’s why we made Trinus: a high-quality, affordable 3D printer that simply works.
Trinus is made with all premium aluminum and steel parts. Not only does it have a metal frame, it also has metal internal components. No loose belts or plastic gears. As a result, Trinus performs at a level far above its price point. By backing our Kickstarter, you’ll be getting Trinus at a special price, and helping us achieve our vision of bringing professional-grade 3D printing to everyone.
Trinus is a new category of 3D printer.
Scaled down from industrial-grade machines, Trinus delivers stability, accuracy, and durability. At its core is a single-axis slide that is commonly used in industrial machines but rarely found in desktop 3D printers. We were able to design a low-cost single-axis slide that delivers extremely high precision but keeps Trinus affordable. With all metal internal components, Trinus does not require constant recalibration. Its parts stay in place.
Because it is so stable, Trinus maintains quality printing up to print speeds of 70 mm/sec, and is capable of running at a maximum speed of 150 mm/sec. It prints at a minimum layer height of 50 microns, generating clean and smooth prints.
With interchangeable heads, you can convert Trinus into a laser engraver within 60 seconds. The laserhead is capable of engraving wood, leather, food, cork, and other soft materials. Use Trinus to make your own coasters, design a leather notebook, or brand your next batch of cookies! Each Trinus Laser Engraver comes with safety glasses, which you must wear when operating the active laser.
For those of you who want to expand the range of your Trinus — we have designed a Heated Bed Platform, 3.2-inch LCD screen and Enclosure Case you can add onto your printer!
Trinus Aluminum Enclosure
Not only will our aluminum Enclosure Case enhance your Trinus’s aesthetics, it is also a practical safety feature, particularly if you are printing with kids or animals at home. For printing with ABS, the Enclosure Case should be mandatory.
Heated Bed Platform
The Trinus Heated Bed Platform is mandatory for printing with ABS and polycarbonate filament (PC). Each order comes with a BuildTak sheet that optimizes your printing surface and makes it easy to remove completed prints. The heated bed has a temperature switch that allows you to switch between 70 and 110 degrees Celsius. We recommend that you purchase the Heated Bed Platform with our Enclosure Case, particularly if you will be printing with ABS.
3.2-inch LCD screen
With the LCD display, you can select which file you want to print from your SD card by selecting it in the visual menu.It will also allow you to control your print directly from Trinus: you can pause/resume, adjust speed and temperature, and check elapsed time and percentage of completion.
We used a lean design approach to keep Trinus simple. With an easy-to-follow manual and only 11 units, Trinus can be assembled in no time. Go from unboxing to starting your first project in just 30 minutes!
Our #1 goal with Trinus was to offer professional-level 3D printing at an affordable price. We want every student, artist, engineer, designer, and budding maker to have access to high-quality 3D printing. Inspired by the Japanese minimalist approach to making, we gave Trinus a lean, modular design. Its frame is constructed of four identical units, lowering production costs. We’ve also partnered with manufacturers that have years of experience producing 3D printers efficiently. Once our Kickstarter is funded, our printers will be made by Flextronics, one of the largest manufacturing companies in the world.
We’re relying on crowdfunding to make Trinus more than a 3D printer. We want to provide all of the features you’ll need for your most ambitious projects — which is why we’ve already developed a laser engraver head, safety enclosure, and heated bed platform to diversify the functions of your Trinus. But we have even more plans! If we get enough support, we’ll be able manufacture Trinus at a low cost and fund research and development for future add-ons, such as a dual extruder, paste extruder, and CNC router head. The more functions we can build, the more you’ll be able to fabricate and experiment to your heart’s content.
Risks and challenges
With any Kickstarter, there is the risk that the creators of a campaign won’t be able to actually deliver their product. We have already produced and tested over 50 prototypes, and are very satisfied with the way Trinus runs mechanically. However, we need to continue improving our software. Currently, Pango is not fully integrated with laser software, and its PC version works better than the Mac version. We would also like to continue testing Trinus with more materials, such as ceramic and magnetic filaments.
Though prototype testing and software development will no doubt take time, we feel confident in our partnerships. Panowin, an established 3D printing company, is creating Pango and helping us test our prototypes. Flextronics, one of the best and most experienced manufacturers in the world, will be manufacturing Trinus after the Kickstarter. And our printers will be backed by superior filaments from Polymaker, which ran their own successful Kickstarter campaign in 2014. Lastly, several members of our own team are experienced with running Kickstarter campaigns and successfully delivering products to their backers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
