Following Kodama's success last year delivering the Trinus 3D printer to all backers, we're ready to once again raise the bar in 3D printing while lowering the price.
Introducing Obsidian, a never-before-seen combination of reliability, quality, and aesthetics. If that's not enough: It runs on non-proprietary firmware, too.
“We felt there was too much of a gap between cheap, unsightly printers that are complicated to assemble and use, and overpriced 3D printers. We knew there had to be a better way to make 3D printing accessible to everyone. We want everyone in the world with an idea in their head to be able to hold it in their hand.”
Obsidian has been in development since 2015, and is Kodama’s first in-house self designed 3D printer, in collaboration with an all-star team of various industry experts. Kodama founder and CEO Michael Husmann is a former project manager at Apple.
The mechanics and internals were handled by an ex Bosch engineer with 3D printing experience. Quality control and electronics were done in consultation with a Singapore based electrical engineer with 30 years experience. Obsidian‘s UI/UX designer works for a major automobile manufacturer. Assembly line bids are in discussion with Flextronics (who assembled the original Trinus) and Foxconn.
Forget "minutes to assemble." Unlike most budget and affordable 3D printer kits, Obsidian comes ready out of the box. Just load your filament, plug the power in, and you’re good to go.
For most 3D printers, a power outage or accidental disconnect is fatal and frustrating, especially when you're halfway into a 12 hour print. With Obsidian, just reconnect and tap 'resume.' *This feature is controlled by the LCD board and therefore limited to Obsidian Plus and Deluxe.
Obsidian's Shield is a three-part kit available as an add on that turns you Obsidian into an enclosed printer. It helps prevent pets or children from touching the print area while it's moving, and also helps with advanced printing of materials like PETG and ABS by controlling the release of heat from the print area. It is not a requirement for printing with those materials, but it helps. The front and back panels attach magnetically for instant installation and removal, and the top cover's accordion-style design allows the extruder to move freely.
With Obsidian you’re not limited to PLA.
Upgrade your package to include a heated bed for printing with Nylon, ABS, PETG, and more! We’ve even successfully printed with PC (Polycarbonate) and CF (Carbon Fiber). But there's one more you may not have heard of, our exclusive and world's first filament with Obsidian powder. In addition, we're in talks with a factory in German to produce tungsten nozzles as a future add on.
Obsidian looks cool and has nice features, but can it print? Absolutely. We know that at the end of the day, the benchmark that matters most is print quality, and Obsidian delivers! See for yourself below or check out our showcase here!
Obsidian’s high quality prints are made possible by its custom-made extruder head. A dual fan set allows efficient temperature control of the heat block and printed model, ensuring consistent extrusion. Obsidian's nozzle and PTFE tube are connected, allowing you to change nozzles by just loosening one screw. Swap nozzles effortlessly!
All pledges feature the same basic Obsidian at heart. Obsidian is a leader in its class in terms of build quality, design, print resolution and reliability. Higher pledge levels give you more access to convenience features and print variety.
Kodama is a lean team of modest means and rich in passion. We are not beholden to VCs or a board. Crowdfunding keeps us close to the stakeholders that matter: You.
Our experience delivering Trinus, our Kickstarter from last year, allowed us to gauge what backers and people wanted at a personal level and make quick decisions to improve our designs during different phases of the campaign. We were able to successfully transition from Crowdfunding to online sales for Trinus after it was delivered to all backers, and are ready to introduce Obsidian to the world in much the same way.
We come back to Kickstarter for your help to order tooling, molds, meet minimum order quantities and successfully ship our Obsidian to You.
Obsidian is so much more than just a machine for making Pokemon and fidget spinners(though you can if you want). Instead of hiring generic actors for our videos, we featured professionals who can incorporate Obsidian into their workflow and daily living. Here are their stories.
Kodama is a San Francisco based company with team members coming from Apple, Bosch and Porsche; experienced engineers and consumer experience professionals. For the past year the team was hands on to develop Obsidian and its add-ons in our Shanghai research and development office. Year-round we have Kodama personnel in China, we are not just handing a manufacturing contract over to a supplier and waiting for the best.
In order to deliver our 2016 project Trinus to 3300+ backers in 80+ countries and successfully transition it from crowdfunding to e-commerce, we partnered with warehouses in New Jersey, Rotterdam, Sydney, and Shenzhen. This distribution set up continues to provide Trinus 3D printers and accessories that you can purchase right now at Kodama3d.com. We will continue to refine and expand our distribution network (including a US west coast warehouse) in order to ensure the timely delivery of Obsidian.
Risks and challenges
We learned many things with the Trinus campaign last year and we managed to overcome many challenges. Our team is experienced and eager to improve on every aspect possible including a quality control with our manufacturers.
For manufacturing components and assembly we are confident our partners are the best in the industry. The designs of printer and parts, as well as our timeline, may be subject to change as we get closer to production readiness.
We will oversee every step of Obsidian production and experience with Trinus distribution channels will make this project to run even smoother.
Regarding customer support, Kodama is built on committed team members who are responsible and do not crack under pressure. This time we are even more ready to deliver the best possible experience.
