Our next stretch goals:
Galaxy Defenders is a cooperative tactical board game, inspired by the classical Sci-Fi movies and video games of the '80s and '90s.
In Galaxy Defenders up to five players fight together – each taking control of one or more agents with unique powers – to defend the planet from an alien invasion. The Aliens are controlled by a sophisticated, card-driven artificial intelligence system. The battle for Earth against the aliens develops in a series of missions organized in a story-driven campaign.
Our miniatures do not require any assembly - The game is ready-to-play out of the box. Painting them is optional: agents are grey, aliens are in green, red, blue plastic, so you don't need to paint them if you don't want to.
By backing this Kickstarter, you will receive a copy of this unique Sci-Fi game, and you will have access to exclusive miniatures, available only to the backers of this project. We have already exceeded our initial funding goal, so we have been able to upgrade the game contents with exciting options: bonus miniatures, additional maps, cards, missions, and more! A lot of stretch goals are already achieved (clck on the summaries below) and more are coming!
Please note: the Pledge Calculator is a beta version. In case of any mismatch between its calculation and the information on the project home, the information on the home project has precedence.

Official Gameplay Videos
The game includes different mission, each mission providing a different challenge to the players.
After setting up the mission, gameplay revolves around a tactical combat system, that uses custom 10-sided dice.
Each player, in sequence, activates his agent. After an agent takes his or her turn, the aliens take their turn. After the actions of agents and aliens are completed, the round ends with an Event phase.
There is no "Alien player": In Galaxy Defenders, the aliens are controlled by the game system itself, through an artificial intelligence system based on TWO types of cards:
ALIEN CARDS: Alien cards define the behavior of each different alien, along with its movement value, skills, life points and weapons.
Each alien figure on the map will be linked to a specific card, to keep track of everything that happens to that alien.
- CLOSE ENCOUNTER CARDS: These cards are drawn at the beginning of each alien turn to determine which aliens will be activated.
The combination of a unique A.I. for each alien species, and the uncertainty about which aliens will be activated in a turn, are an incredibly realistic simulation of the chaos of battle, and provide a very sophisticated challenge to the players' skill.
Thanks to the turn structure, the level of difficulty will scale dynamically based on the number of agents in play. More agents in play bring more activations of the aliens. In this way, the system grants the right level of difficulty with any number of players. Even in the event of some agents dying during the game, the system will "recalibrate" the difficulty to a reasonable and enjoyable level, so you may still have a chance to complete a mission.
CAMPAIGN & RANK-UP SYSTEM
The events of each mission will influence future games in two different ways:
- Each mission may have multiple endings and the outcome of any mission will change the flow of the story.
- The Agents will gain experience during the missions. This experience can be used to transform a good soldier into a perfect Galaxy Defender agent with multiple skills, basic and improved tactics and the ability to use new devices, improved human weapons and Alien technology. Each Agent has unique paths to development, so that different characters will preserve their specialties even when leveling-up.
Further information and more videos about gameplay will be added soon...
Stretch goals are added to the rewards shown below from Rookie Agent level up. The Elite Agent pledge also includes the first 4 Kickstarter Exclusive figures, not included with Rookie Agent pledges.
CANADIAN BACKERS: Please note that the International freight charge does not apply to Canada. The shipment cost for Canada is 50% of the normal International freight: $ 9 (instead of $ 18) for Scientists, $ 25 (instead of $ 49) for Agents, $ 30 (instead of $ 60) for Teams and Squads, $ 55 (instead of $ 110) for Earth Defenders. Just indicate you are as a US backer when pledging, then add the indicated freight charge to the pledge.
INTERNATIONAL BACKERS: Please note that there are pledge levels with free shipping wordlwide (Worldwide Elite Agent, Armored Agent, Galaxy Defender).
EUROPEAN (EU) BACKERS We will have two fulfillment centers shipping, one in the USA, one in Europe. If you choose a free shipping pledge level, and you live in an EU country, 10% must be added to your pledge to partially cover our VAT cost.If your pledge has a freight cost, no additional amount is due. See our update on the subject for full details.
Before pledging, check if any of the Early Bird slots is still available! Early Bird backers will have special discounts applied to the normal pledge amounts listed below.
No matter what is your pledge level, you may add one or more options to make your games of Galaxy Defenders even more exciting. To add options, just click the "Manage your Pledge" button on the sidebar, and add the indicated amount to your pledge.
Don't worry if you can't decide which options to add on right now - you can add any of them when replying to the survey you will receive after the Kickstarter ends.
EXCLUSIVE KS FIGURES
You may add exclusive figure as an option if they are not included in your pledge level, or if you want to include more copies of the option in a game. This is especially useful for the Alien figures, as up to 2 of each Alien figure may be used in a mission. No additional shipping charges are required if this option is shipping with any other reward.
Additional options ship free of charge together with the other rewards of your pledge level (from Scientist up), unless indicated diffrently.
Galaxy Defenders includes high-quality plastic figures. We are also producing a limited print run of metal figures for our Kickstarter backers.
No additional shipping charges are required if this option is shipping with any other reward.
All the stretch goal rewards are applicable to the Rookie Agent level and up.
Ares and Gremlin Project are fully committed to make Galaxy Defenders a reality. With the initial level of funding, we wanted to deliver an amazing game with high-quality models.
But as we reached beyond this goal, there's much more that we can do, and we are adding special rewards to our backers.
Here are the stretch goals that we achieved as we exceeded our initial funding goal.
And more stretch goal are coming! Here are the next ones, and more will be revealed as the project goes on.
Ares Games, publisher of the game, presents... the Galaxy Defenders development team, including talents from all around the World!
The development and pre-production of Galaxy Defenders are now almost complete. The main sculpting and art has been commissioned and funded directly by Ares Games and Gremlin Project.
We are ready to start production as soon as the Kickstarter ends. The funding from the project will enable us to fully fund the production, but will also help us to support the long-range financial commitment to develop Galaxy Defenders as a full product line, as we think this game deserves to become.
The success of this Kickstarter will also allow Ares Games to properly fund future developments of this product line.
An additional benefit of launching Galaxy Defenders as a Kickstarter project is that it will provide us with valuable feedback from you, our backers, to help us direct the future development of the line.
Our backers will be the first ones to receive the game, before its release in stores, and will be the only ones to initially have access to the four exclusive miniatures. Depending on the success of our project, and the stretch goals we achieve, we may also be able to offer more exclusive rewards to our backers.
Risks and challenges
Creating a high-quality boardgame with miniatures is not an easy challenge. However, Ares Games has an excellent track record of publishing games with high-end components, such as our War of the Ring game and our Wings of Glory miniature line. Our staff already has a significant experience in producing games with ready-to-play miniatures and a wide range of different components, and we don't envision any specific risk associated to the production of this project.
The main risk at this stage is that the project might be delayed with respect
to its scheduled date, if this should become necessary to ensure the level of quality we are looking for in our games in general, and in this product specifically,
There are also risks of delays, as with any game product with Asia-based manufacturing, associated to transport and delivery to our warehouse in the United States. These are also routinely handled by our logistic staff, but unexpected delays due to customs clearance, strikes, exceptional weather are always possible, and they may influence the time necessary to deliver the games to our customers.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The Galaxy Defenders core set is a big box, weighing more than 2 kilos and with a size of 40 x 27 x 8.5. The shipping packaging further adds to its weight and volume. The normal freight cost actually covers only about 60% of our actual cost, and we are absorbing the rest of the cost.
To help offset the high cost of shipping we created pledge levels which are especially convenient for International backers - the Worldwide Elite Agent, and the "combined" pledge levels - Team and Squad.
EU backers will be serviced by a EU fulfillment center. If the pledge has a freight cost, it includes VAT. If the pledge is free shipping, 10% must be added as a partial contribution to the 19% VAT charges we will pay on the pledge.
There are no freight costs for US residents, or when shipping to a US address.
If you live in Canada, you need to add:
- $ 9 instead of $ 18 for "Scientist" rewards.
- $ 25 instead of $ 49 for "Rookie Agent" or "Elite Agent" rewards;
- $ 30 instead of $ 60 for "Team" or "Squad" rewards;
- $ 55 instead of $ 110 for "Earth Defender" rewards.
Ares' offices are in Italy, but our warehouse is located in Ft.Wayne, IN (USA) and all our shipments depart from that location.
We are shipping EU shipments from Germany. In this case, the freight cost includes not only the actual shipping charges, but also the VAT which must be deducted from your pledge.
Yes. If you want to pledge for two different reward packages (e.g. Scientist and Rookie), just choose the highest level one as your main reward, and add the minimum amount for the other one(s) to your pledge. For example, if you choose Elite Agent ($120) and Scientist ($35), pledge $155 and choose "Elite Agent" as your reward.
If you are a non-US backer, you must add shipping charges for each level you pledge for.
Just add the amount of the options you choose to your pledge, by "Managing your pledge" on the right sidebar. You can send us a message using the "Contact" button on the right sidebar to tell us about your choice. In any case, we will reconcile pledges and rewards with the survey at the end of the Kickstarter.
I am interested in pledging at the "Galaxy Defender" level. Which figures are included as painted at this level?
If you pledge as a Galaxy Defender ($800), the 23 core set figures, and all the bonus figures which are added as a free bonus to the Elite Agent pledge will be painted. Additional options you may request will not be painted.
For example, at 150K, you will get painted the 23 base set figures, the 2 new blue figures, the beast, and the 5 exclusive figures painted, for a total of 30 painted figures.
But if you add 1 Elite Alien Army on top as an added option, it won't be painted.
Given the limited nature of this reward, if you have an interest to get additional figures painted, we may work out a quote from our master painters at the end of the project to get them painted, in exchange for a proportionately higher pledge.
