About this project
I am self-publishing The Practicing Herbalist meeting with clients, reading the body - again! With your purchasing now I will be able to get The Practicing Herbalist updated, adding in new chapters, printed and into the world by August. I self published the first and second editions so have plenty of experience to complete this work - and I love this book.
The Practicing Herbalist will give you the tools to understand how look at facial indicators (wrinkles, colors, rashes) and interpret the message. Includes Table of Contents and is fully Indexed.
These pages are tools for any herb lover, parent or, well, any human to find answers to the meaning of lines, blemishes, & tissue colors of the face, nails and tongue, elimination analysis, signs of hot, cold, damp and dry conditions and then to the herbs.
If you want to become a practitioner there are chapters on basic office and business skills. It is a valuable asset to have a business course with practical suggestions. You get the skills from forty years of running a home office synthesized into a few clear chapters. I have loved the feedback from so many excited readers as they began their practices. Budding or weathered there is plenty to absorb and improve for your visual and health related knowledge. I hope you get inspired too!
The pleasure of reading stories and humorous commentary of life in a clinical herbalist's office appeals to all. The intention was not to write a book of non-fiction yet The Practicing Herbalist contains numerous poignant and hilarious vignettes and has entertained people from all walks of life. It is on the coffee table, kitchen shelf or bathroom for quick or relaxed reading and refer
What is the Practicing Herbalist • Reading the Body?
The Practicing Herbalist will give you the tools to understand how look at facial indicators (wrinkles, lines, rashes, shapes, colors, irregularities and more) and know how and why they tie to emotions, endocrine glands and organs, then discover simple foods and herbs to improve daily living. If you want to become a practitioner there are chapters on basic office and business skills. I have loved the feedback from so many excited readers as they began their practices. Budding or weathered there is plenty to absorb. I hope you get inspired too! Herbs are the common man’s food!
Earthsong Herbals is my busy family practice and herb school in Marblehead Ma. I offer classes and workshops in my home office, and travel around the United States and beyond teaching. The Practicing Herbalist is a comprehensive compilation of my life's work. The first edition of a thousand sold in 5 years, the next was sold four! This was all by word of mouth and sold from home. The book has gone to most countries and I feel that I'm ready to handle some major shipping.
What's new in the third edition? Over the last year I have been writing, planning and compiling the additions. There are new drawings of body indications - check out the table of contents from the second edition on the website to get an idea of the content. Every chapter has been updated from the previous edition.
Original Artwork Rewards: Original etchings from the book will be available to pick up at the book celebration with sweet Jazz and herbal tea and delicious nibbles afternoon for friends, family and Kickstarter Campaign contributors. In July and August you can choose artwork at the one of the two Reading the Body seminars in Marblehead. There will be small, medium and large etchings, with one or two copies of the inscribed book to choose from. Go to the rewards to figure out which size of original art is best for you.
The writing is completed, the calligraphy and tables and indexing are all done, new art work placed prior to each new chapter. Ahhh, the files have been sent to my very reliable printer, a few weeks of proofs, sending in the completed cover and we get into the production line. Real ink on paper. My printer Thomson-Shore is owned by the employees and creates income within the country. At that point we await the big truck full of books! I'll start addressing boxes for shipping ASAP. Maybe with help from some herbal apprentices, grateful clinic participants and friends.
Risks and challenges
The third edition is written, calligraphy, artwork, tables, new chapters, and diagrams for facial indications done! I have to come up with half the cost of printing when I send in the file to the wonderful tried and true printer. We had a few early bumps, helping my daughter with care of newborn Owen to keep her home stress-free after the birth (after her surgery for appendicitis 5 weeks prior to the birth!) then she had to return to work too soon. So we cared for wee Owen. Worth every penny, time with Owen priceless. My two graphic designers worked harmoniously dealing with this tome - 508 pages. Linda Diering worked from the front and Dawn Gregory from the back. The file for the printer is completed and sent! The cover has been designed by Hanna Dyer. The book was off to the printer June 12th and the two proofs have taken 4 weeks even though my turn around was a day! Frustrating. It will be hard cover 8.5 by 11. It looks like mid-August. I asked for every proof to ship express mail this time and thee second was not! Right at the peak of herbal symposiums. I have a loan in place to cover the initial deposit of ($12,500) and hope to pay that off, and all other production expenses ($15,000) by the time the books are shipped (Trucking an additional $3000) to me.
I plan to hire additional help from my long list of clinic clients who have been out of work to help with typing in addresses and preparing shipping labels online. I also have clients I have had in clinic who will work for the project because they are able to work even though they haven't been able to pay me in the past; Veterans, young parents, students and retired people trying to live on social security. Everyone loves to be useful. The number of orders will determine whether I ship the finished books to a Publishers Distribution House instead of storing them in every room of this house!
So that's it- everything else has gone smoothly and now I'll get some time with the seven grandchildren!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
