About this project
Saga of Mong is an epic live-action web series and comic book inspired by a number of cult classic, and just plain classic films - mostly from the '80s. Our company is 190 Proof Entertainment and our goal for this project is to make the most intense and hilarious series ever produced. We're filmmakers, with works of drama, horror, and comedy under our belt. Our passion is for Film and TV of all sorts, but, being children of the '80s, we have a special place in our hearts for some of the unique styles that emerged during that period. We're pushing the limits of what's been done before for a full on assault of the senses: 100% horror. 100% comedy. This is the passion project we've been building in our heads for the last 20 years. If you grew up on the same films, or find the content here interesting at all, I invite you to take a look at our rewards and please do join the party. You won't regret it.
WHY ARE WE HERE?
We need this project kickstarted by you, the fans of this type of work, because, well it’s just too ambitious and expensive for our personal budgets to cover. This project will require a large number of FX shots - mostly practical. We know, we know - you’ve heard it before from everyone from Spielberg to Stallone: “For this film we are relying 95% on real world practical effects.” And then you watched the cartoon movie they shit out shortly after making those statements. Not us! We truly love optical and traditional practical effects and will honestly stick to using them as much as possible. The number one limitation? Money. That’s where you come in.
By participating in one of our reward levels you will be directly influencing the amount and quality of FX work we can put into this web series. And as per the scripts that have been written… we are going to need all the help we can get in this department. We are calling in all the favors we can for this thing, but we still need to establish a healthy budget to execute at the level we all want for this project. We intend to hold nothing back and deliver a world class series that will stand above all others in the genre. To reiterate: the money from the kickstater campaign goes straight to production related expenses for quality FX work, quality camera and lens rentals where needed (again, top quality only) and to casting.
We can’t call in favors for everything and we will need some portion of the budget to lock down the talented actors we have already begun the process of casting. We have access to a wide range of camera equipment and to multiple high-end professional editing and special effects work stations. This will save a large portion of our budget that would otherwise be spent in this space. We’re covering that end, and we’re covering absolutely as much of the front end as our wives, families, and credit cards will allow.
So come along for the ride and together we can build something that will stand the test of time as a series that is true to its roots and pure to its intents and purposes - no Hollywood execs are going to rein this crew in and tell us it can’t be done.
Severed limbs, buckets of blood and most importantly - mechanical demon deer puppets don't come cheap, but we'll be damned if we don't create the best demon deer ever put to film or video.
Our goal for the campaign is only $10,000. This will ensure the production of the first episode - Pandemonium Forest. But, we are hoping to go well beyond this and achieve our stretch goals which will allow for the production of more episodes. And remember these numbers aren't the final budgets, just the amount that we need from kickstarter. The rest will be coming from our own pockets.
Below are the numbers we need to hit for each episode:
Chapter I: Pandemonium Forest---------------$10,000
Chapter II: In Ronald Reagan We Trust------$16,000
Chapter III: The Church of Jack Burton-------$24,000
Chapter IV: Le Grande Noir---------------------$32,000
Chapter V: 190 Proof Transubstantiation-----$40,000
Note - these figures are the amounts needed to produce the episode listed AND all the ones before it. In other words, if we hit $40,000 we will be able to produce ALL 5 episodes at the quality level we intend.
Finally if we hit $40,000 and beyond we will up the production value in any way we can, and put money forward for Season 2 of the Saga, as well as ensure we have funds to continue producing the comic book well into the future. If we hit this top end goal we will also be sending out a secret, special reward for everyone that participates at any level. Please share this campaign and help us put this series in motion!
THE COMIC BOOK
Make no mistake - what we are kickstarting here is a web series. But a large part of this campaign and the universe of this story is the comic book, and we've put in considerable work on this aspect alone. This was our starting place for bringing to life the Saga of Mong. The story had been outlined, and the first episode written, when we decided that this was perfect material for a comic book.
We teamed up with Kevin Phillips, a seasoned pro in the world of comic books, to bring to life the first imagery of the Saga of Mong, and we are very proud of the results. Throughout this page and its videos, you will see frames from the comic book in varying forms of completion. We are only showing some of the final frames so as not to spoil the story and to showcase the development of this valuable asset, but rest assured: the comic book we will deliver as one of our rewards will be the final, colored comic book which, in our opinion, holds up to the best of them in terms of artistry, polish and originality.
We intend for the comic book to continue well into the future. The first issue has already been made and 4 more are currently in the works. With your help we will continue to make them right alongside the web series. Eventually, perhaps at the end of Season 1, we have ambitions for the comic book to veer off and tell its own stories, separate from the web series. This will allow us to further flesh out the world of Mong, and the comic book and web series will complement each other well in this way.
The great benefit to developing the comic book first - aside from creating a tremendous addition to this universe and an amazing reward for our wonderful supporters, is that we can use this first stab of visualization as a tool for story-boarding our web series. We intend to take the comic book as a starting point and to meet and exceed the framing and visual gusto we've already realized.
While the following rewards are offered in digital form, at the higher reward tiers these are also offered as tangible, high quality, printed pieces. Hold them in your actual hands and enjoy them anytime, anywhere - with or without electricity.

Finally our most elite tangibles include a PLUSH SEVERED DEER LEG and PLUSH SEVERED DEER HEAD.

MORE CAST AND CREW
Below are a few more of the stand out creatives that have joined us so far, but didn't make it into the video:
Theodus Crane - LE GRANDE NOIR
Theo has worked with 190 Proof in the past and has built a strong resume in recent years including work in the popular Walking Dead series. He'll be teaming up with the 190 crew once again for one wild ride.
Phil Perpich - PRODUCTION SOUND MIXER
Phil Perpich is an experienced sound professional with experience on productions large and small from Reality TV shows to Feature Films. He comes to Saga of Mong from previous experience working with Jeremy Enis on the short film Halycon Dreams.
R. Todd Jones - COSTUME DESIGNER
R. Todd Jones is a proven professional in the realm of costume design. He also comes to this production from his previous work with Jeremy on Halcyon Dreams.
Risks and challenges
The primary challenge of this project will be executing a web series to the high visual standards of the films and television shows from which it was inspired.
Our strategy: in addition to our extensive experience as filmmakers and video producers, AND the fact that we are using the comic book itself as a story-boarding tool for this web series, we will be relying on the experience and resources of our FX team - from the practical FX masters at Changeling FX to the talented digital artist we will employ, we are surrounding ourselves with talent.
This is not our first rodeo - but we do plan on it being our greatest work.
If you are unable to participate in our rewards system, you can still help out tremendously by sharing this project with others.
