Ten years ago, HERE, THERE BE DRAGONS, the first book in my illustrated Young Adult Fantasy series The Chronicles of the Imaginarium Geographica was published. It became a bestseller, has been published in more than twenty languages, and still remains in print in hardcover to this day. Six other books in the series were published: THE SEARCH FOR THE RED DRAGON; THE INDIGO KING; THE SHADOW DRAGONS; THE DRAGON'S APPRENTICE; THE DRAGONS OF WINTER; and the final volume, THE FIRST DRAGON, which concluded the story I began in Book One...
...but it wasn't the last Imaginarium Geographica story I had to tell.
I had written a novella about one of my most popular characters, Don Quixote, and how he came to be trapped in the Keep of Time, but only the prologue was ever published. I had also written several short stories which were intended to become picture books at one point, before being set aside. And when I was working on the screenplay of HERE, THERE BE DRAGONS for Warner Brothers, I discovered there was more to share about my trio of heroes, John, Jack, and Charles, than I had ever realized.
For most of a decade, readers eagerly awaited Autumn and the publication of a new Imaginarium Geographica book, which many of them had often received as Christmas presents. My publisher wasn't interested in doing another book any time soon, but I've successfully published a number of projects through my own imprint, Coppervale Press, and I couldn't bear to let another Christmas go by without giving my readers a new book (and maybe I also really wanted to do a book with an orange cover). I also wanted to do something special to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the publication of HERE, THERE BE DRAGONS. So I pulled out all of the unused stories and created a new framing sequence that tied them all together... and that's when I realized there would be an eighth book: THE DRAGON KNIGHT.
This will be a standalone book, readable at either end of the seven book series, or at any point in between. It consists of stories of all the characters and places my readers know and love, including "The Littlest Knight and the Last Dragon," "Mr. Tummeler's Grand Day Out," and more, as well as the TRUE story of how John, Jack, and Charles became Caretakers, and the long-awaited novella about Don Quixote and the Keep of Time, "The Thin Man and the Queen of Stars." All with new illustrations by me and presented in a beautiful new edition that will match the set perfectly.
WHY THIS PROJECT NEEDS YOUR SUPPORT:
I created this Kickstarter for a very simple purpose: I wanted to share more stories set in the world I had created in these books, and I wanted to do so by producing a beautiful jacketed hardcover that would match the other books in the series. HERE, THERE BE DRAGONS alone has sold more than a hundred thousand copies, and so asking for the support to publish THE DRAGON KNIGHT from the readers who have been reading and enjoying these books for the past ten years made sense. So that's exactly what I'm doing: asking for your help to make this book happen.
Backers will receive either hardcovers or limited-edition hardcovers of THE DRAGON KNIGHT book, and/or special 10th Anniversary HERE, THERE BE DRAGONS t-shirts along with a few other special items as detailed in the rewards below:
And, a special offer for our longtime bookseller partners:
You can help us make this book a reality. Thank you for your attention, and your support. We couldn't do what we do without you.

Risks and challenges
There are very few risks to be had in supporting this project, because I have done this — published my own work — many times before, and several times via successful Kickstarter campaigns. I was the co-designer of the original books, and will be posting the new illustrations for this book during the month the campaign runs; and when this project funds, the files will be uploaded to the printer for printing and binding and then the prepping for fulfillment will begin.
There are always possible challenges, such as delays with printing and shipping, and other unexpected things could also happen which might hold up delivery, but this is my sixth Kickstarter. My team has developed a reputation for always keeping everyone apprised, and we always deliver exactly what I said we would. In fact, one of the previous projects shipped several weeks early to 90% of our backers, with only a handful of the foreign packages going out in the actual delivery month.
We've decided to keep this project as simple as possible to minimize the risk, and to show all of our readers and supporters that we have continued to learn from our experiences. The project is both simple and elegant; we have a production facility we know and trust, who produced the jacketed hardcover trilogy for my last Kickstarter; and we have an excellent fulfillment team in place who are determined to keep this project on schedule and get all of the books shipped by Mid-December.
As with the last project, we have added in the costs of domestic shipping. The cost isn't very much, but multiplied by several hundred packages it can affect the viability of a project, and the minimal additional cost is still a bargain for the level of quality we deliver.
I promise I will keep everyone updated as to the progress of the project — particularly if there are any delays or obstacles — and they will be overcome to deliver what you have supported and what I have promised.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
