As an engineer, I spend most of the day sitting in front of a desk. Since it is hard for me to endure long hours of sitting, I have tried many cushion products currently on the market, but none provided me the comfort I wanted – it felt like I was wearing someone else’s clothes. There were only one-size-fits-all products that didn’t satisfy my needs. I found out that a significant factor for discomfort while sitting on a chair is the intense pressure on the hips and thighs. This pressure often leads to fatigue and improper posture. As a result, I have decided to develop a new form of cushion which can distribute pressure evenly on the body, as well as be customized to the user. No more one-size fits all; rather, a perfect cushion created just for you.
Thermoplastic Poly Urethane (TPU)
- Rubber products have shortcomings such as odor, oxidation, skin allergies for long-term use. TPU product has no secondary damages by odor or damages even for long-term use.
- It is easy to clean when contaminated.
Lower air bags
- -Made up of upper and lower part air bags
- -It does not distribute the interface pressure between hip and the device. Rather, it distributes the interface pressure between the undersurface and the parts against it.
- It prevents the secondary damage to maintain fair conditions. Even though there is damage in upper airbag or air leakage, the lower airbag does not blow out immediately.

Sensor-based Inflation Levels
- The main function of seat.AI is maintaining the proper air amount in the cushion. There is a certain level of air pressure required to meet a comfortable standard. However, the amount of air pressure needed varies depending on each person’s statistics such as height and weight. To ensure proper air pressure, we inserted sensors into the cushion which allow the cushion to be observed using your smartphone. Seat.AI analyzes the transmitted states and tells the user whether the cushion is inflated to a proper air pressure or not. The “proper air” amount was determined by our team as a result of extensive testing.
Sensor & Application Linked
- There are four sensors in the cushion that can measure air pressure, temperature, and the battery condition
- You can use the device up to 7 days(about 300 hours) due to low energy consumption by using BLE communication equipment.
- The cushion's data of air pressure, temperature, and the battery condition are sent to the smartphone device through sensors' BLE transmission , then shown in texts, images, and graphs.
Main idea of our team for the cushion was the AIR. Our ultimate goal was to distribute the air in the cushion automatically and manually as the user’s wish. Why? It’s because every single body, such as height or weight, is not the same. We have accomplished the both distributing conditions to our cushion by making 64 upper air bags and 240 lower air bags (also we added two valves on both sides of the cushion to remove or add more air manually). In addition, we inserted air tunnels between the air bags so that air can move freely in the cushion. As a result, user’s air pressure can be evenly balanced. Since it is user’s choice to adjust the amount of air, we selected TPU (Thermoplastic Poly Urethane) for material. It is odor free for long-time usage, waterproof, easy to clean and hard to be blown outs. Finally, we came up with sensor board that can collect and transmit data to the software. We spent quite of time to build sensor board to make better connection condition and transmitted data condition. Hence, the sensor board came up with longer shape than what we had imagined in the end to make optimal condition of what we can serve to users. We are currently working on inserting sensor board into the cushion.
seat.AI was originally designed for ourselves, what we wanted to use. Wrong postures resulted from sitting at work for a long time, are not even easily noticed as the cause of the body sores. That is why we have created a system called seat.AI software to help users recognize their improper postures by mobile application notification. We tried to make our product trustful and easily accessible. Our software divided air pressure zone to over 200 levels to measure a user’s posture to a high degree of accuracy, which is then compared to our extensive posture database. Also, our BLE(Bluetooth Low Energy) connection method keeps battery consumption low. At the same time, users do not need to pair one on one with Bluetooth. Instead, it will automatically find the user’s registered cushion around. We are currently working on the design of the application.
Integration of IoT Technology(software) and Hardware
The extension of our idea meets to integration of IoT Technology and hardware. Our question was then how do you say it is proper air amount in the cushion? Any? Some? We have gone through extensive researches and tests, yet it's our know-how that cannot be open source. Instead, we additionally built software system for you to intuitively acknowledge the amount of proper air pressure in our test range results. This software will help users recognize improper posture in their daily life. Specially, software will separate the optimal air pressure range zone (that we have in our database) into 200 levels to measure a user's posture for a higher degree of accuracy, which is then compared to an extensive posture database. seat.AI's hardware is comprised of sensor, main board and control board. Sensor is measuring inside of seating cushion (notice right or left on your posture) and control board is collecting the data. Then, Main board sends the collected statistic data through Bluetooth Protocol (We introduced BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy: The user does not have to pair with Bluetooth manually, it will automatically find your close cushion around the user. This method also will help to save some battery consumptions on your smartphone.)) so that all the data will transmit to smartphone. Then user will see all information about their own posture (right tilted, left tilted or proper posture) through the smartphone. You can monitor your posture daily, weekly and monthly basis from the software.

- You can check the current air pressure through graph and can adjust the proper air pressure by injecting or deflating, to the optimum state.
- It alarms when you are in wrong posture for long time.
- User can get the reports on how their postures have been. The report can be easily checked in three ways; texts, images, and graphs. (There are three types of postures; Proper, left tilted, and right tilted)
