About this project

What do Alexander the Great and Sauron have in common? They were both able to raise an army. Now that's hard to do in any economy, but especially if you have to buy expensive pewter or plastic minis!

Midwest Clerics' Armies aims to give you a tabletop army that your friends will want to look at, without the cost or time investment of acquiring and painting traditional miniatures. Plus, our pawns are easier to store than traditional minis, take up a lot less room, and you don't have to worry about part of it breaking off.

What makes these pawns different from others in the market?

Artwork: Most printed pawns use illustrations. They are clearly an artist's drawing. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, and it can look neat, but it's not the direction we want to go. We are making high-resolution 3D graphics that are less cartoon and more lifelike.

The best selling pawns in the market today use the same image on both the front and back of the unit. We don't. We want anyone who looks at your tabletop to know which way each of the characters are facing. That is why our units have a clear front and back side. How else will rogues know which side to sneak attack?

White is a common background for printed pawns: stark white. While it makes the unit easy to see, white doesn't really fit well anywhere except a padded room. We've opted to use actual backgrounds while keeping the characters easy to see.

Materials:
A-frame paper cutouts and cardboard punchouts on stands are your two basic choices. Not anymore! We are taking the high-resolution 3D graphics we already have and printing them on nearly indestructible plastic. That's right, these are the highest quality printed pawns available anywhere. If Mountain Dew gets spilled on them, they aren't going to warp or discolor. Simply wipe them off and they are good to go!

Another problem we have seen with the popular cardboard punchouts is that the die cutting machine will often cut off part of the artwork. You have sword fighters missing swords and other such nonsense. That is not an issue with our units. All of our artwork falls within the parameters of the actual physical unit.

What, exactly, are the armies I can get?

We will update this section during the campaign and will also provide more information through campaign updates. The orc imaged used in the video was merely a placeholder image and not indicative of this set. You can expect the same great quality of artwork and craftsmanship as the other army sets.

Add Ons:

You can add these to any of your rewards by increasing your pledge amount by the amount listed below.

$3 - Clear plastic binder sleeves that are the perfect size to organize the Midwest Clerics' line of pawns. Enough sleeves for XXX pawns. Binder not included.

$5 - 20 additional bases

$12 - 60 additional bases

$35 - Deluxe binder and slipcase with clear plastic sleeves the perfect size to hold any of the Midwest Clerics' line of pawns. Comes with enough sleeves for pawns.

Stretch Goals:

$11,000 - We will add eight (8) new units to each of the goblin and hobgoblin armies for a total of 16 new units and 32 new pieces of art (each unit has a unique front and back). This will give each set 16 unique units. The total number of units that ships with these sets will still be 80.

$20,000 - We will add a new army set: Dwarves! Midwest Clerics' Dwarven Army will ship with 80 units (16 unique).

History:

In 2013, after seeing a need for artisans, craftsmen, and other NPC city dwellers represented in tabletop sessions, we launched the campaign for City Folk. A month later it funded at 1,292% of the goal and we delivered a product that was well received by our backers. They gave us high marks for component quality and art.

We learned a lot about the manufacturing process as we hand punched each unit out of our garage. Over 100,000 hand punched pawns later, we realized this was unsustainable moving forward if we, as a company, wanted to have any other products.

Three years and a couple of other Kickstarter projects later and we are confident we have a sustainable manufacturing process in place. We are making the quality even better than before and are still committed to make our products in the USA.

Risks and challenges

Our manufacturing is US based and ready to go, so there should be no issues of quality control, waiting for a boat to cross the Pacific, or for customs to hold things up. Nearly all of our artwork was completed before we launched the project and is easily on track to finish before the project's end date, but if we reach our stretch goals and commission additional artwork it could delay the delivery of the project since we would not be able to go to print directly after the campaign ended. We have, however, padded our delivery time to account for some unexpected hiccups, so additional art may not be an issue.

We have learned so much through our three previous successful campaigns. Whatever happens during or after the campaign, we will keep everyone posted through updates. You won't be left wondering what is happening. You will get what we promised.
