Subdural haemorrhage: a bleed on the brain
Subdural haemorrhage: a bleed on the brain

Brainbook is a collaborative effort between neurosurgeons at the Royal London Hospital, and medical illustrators like Artibiotics. We de-mystify brain and spine surgery for the public and patients by exploring these topics visually with engaging videos featuring illustration, scans, surgical video, interviews, and hospital tours behind the scenes.

Recent projects include the Brain surgeon's vlog, a case of head trauma (and accompanying article), an introduction to brain aneurysms and repair360 degree virtual reality brain aneurysm surgery. Our illustrated films are freely accessible to all.

Broken bones (fractures) in the neck can have catastrophic consequences. Patients and their families often have lots of questions about the trauma and potential surgical repair. We want to help the public understand why these fractures are so serious, and help patients understand their injury and repair.

Brainbook is teaming up with Artibiotics to develop an illustrated short film and blog article. This will follow the journey of a person sustaining a neck fracture and being treated with a neurosurgical repair. It will feature real surgical case footage from a GoPro, medical illustration explaining it, and the case will be woven together through a cartoon story.

When a brain aneurysm bursts, patients describe a 'thunderclap headache', "like being hit by a baseball bat from behind".
When a brain aneurysm bursts, patients describe a 'thunderclap headache', "like being hit by a baseball bat from behind".

Creating a film like this takes multidisciplinary expertise. We have our team assembled, film equipment and location ready, raw surgical footage, and experience developing engaging content blending film, illustration and animation. We have come to Kickstarter to ask for your support to fund the illustrated content production and video editing to complete this short film.

In return, backers can get cool rewards including medical art, being illustrated in the films credits, and even make a cartoon cameo appearance in the story!

The final illustrated video and articles will be freely available to all on our website and YouTube channel. Help us open the conversation on a misunderstood trauma with this engaging short film!

Stretch Goals

Risks and challenges

Brainbook and Artibiotics have experience working together to successfully produce several illustrated videos and articles on neurosurgery topics for the public. Artibiotics has created and fulfilled a successful Kickstarter previously, and will be handling reward fulfilment. We have filmed our raw surgical footage for the video, and built in some flexibility to the timescale to account for any unforseen challenges. The time for illustrated content development is being secured and funded by this Kickstarter. We will keep all backers informed throughout should anything change, but anticipate a straightforward production with these measures.
