Fire! Brimstone! Goat eyes & the grim visage of hell itself!
Let’s dim the lights, light our black candles, shave our antlers, and put our hooves up on the couch for once. It’s that time of year again, ghastly goetians, time for another season of Thirteen Demon Princes!
Broadcast throughout the Nine Dantean Planes of Hell, Thirteen Demon Princes is everyghoul’s favorite dating show, where one lucky demon has their pick of infernal suitors. We match them up, send them out on dates, and stir the cauldron of drama to ensure that you, impish viewer, have the most entertaining night of the week. While we can each find our own personal hells to occupy our eternities, there’s truth to the phrase that hell is other people. We’re all here today to share our hell with others and find… The One.
WE ARE FULLY FUNDED!!!!!
Now comes the fun part! I've got some great ideas for Stretch Goals to share with you all, extra things that we can fund that will make Thirteen Demon Princes the most fun it could possibly be.
$2300 - Snazzy Layout - UNLOCKED
Our first Stretch Goal is to get some sweet layout for the book. I do all my games' layout in a free online software that is good enough for the Quickstart Promo Edition that backers should find in their inbox, but I'd love to get this in the hands of someone who has real graphic design chops & the resources to use them. Enter VJ Brown.
VJ is the host of the Hedged In actual play podcast, a close friend, and someone whose layout work has been featured in games like Empty Orchestra and the upcoming Descent into Midnight. She's got a great eye for RPG book design and I can't wait to bring her into the project. We'll unlock this Stretch Goal at $2,300.
$2600 - Extra Art
The art we've used for the Quickstart is all sourced from Unsplash, a Creative Commons photography community. The photos we're including in the game are striking & beautiful but we know that there are some things hellish and foul that can't be captured by the camera lens. If we can hit $2600 we'll include interior art from one of my favorite RPG visual artists, Aaron King.
Aaron runs shared campaign worlds in the Twin Cities and has products up on the DM's Guild. His visual style is a striking array of collages that are equal parts Hieronymus Bosch and 19th century science textbook. He's got a phenomenal eye for the alien and the human alike and I can't wait to get his art in Thirteen Demon Princes.
$2900 - Next Level Editing
I had planned on running Thirteen Demon Princes through basic editing, but had thought that professional editing was going to be a luxury I could not afford on my first project. Now that we're knocking on Stretch Goal's doors, however, I have an opportunity to move this goal to reality. If we hit $2900, I'll be able to hire a professional RPG editor, and good friend of mine, Jessa Michalek!
Jessa works as a convention helper and RPG editor for projects like CONvergence and Flames Rising Press. Her RPG credits include anthologies like Rites of Renown and The Poison Tree, and adventures like There Was A Dark, Dark House. She has experience with broody monsters and knows my loving takes on demons from our local game group. I can't wait until we can bring her into the #13DP fold!
Thirteen Demon Princes is a larp, a Live Action Role Play, that is set on the stage of Hell’s most popular dating show, Thirteen Demon Princes. The game is based on Singularity, the transhuman dating show larp by Josh Jordan and Aura Belle. Every time you play this game, you’ll be acting out an episode of the show. One person will play your Host who guides everyone through the game, stirring up drama. One person will play the Morning Star, the object of our affections and the one who gets to choose who wins or looses. Everyone else will play Contestants, various Demonic Royalty who are competing for the Morning Star's love.
Thirteen Demon Princes is a dating sim game, a genre that simulates dates or romantic outings between two or more people. The focus on the game is matching people of diverse backgrounds and beliefs with others to see how they match up. The most interesting play in this genre is seeing how our characters are alike, how they’re different, what and who they care about, and ultimately, how they fall in love. We will use the pre-generated characters, who all represent something demonic, to poke into our expectations of “normal” love and attraction and put these questions to the test in a melodramatic way.
Dating shows are a special type of dating sim. On a dating show, the Host serves as a mediator for these stories, your Virgil through Hell if you will. The Host guides our characters through an episode of Thirteen Demon Princes, giving everyone an opportunity to get to know one another before putting them to the test and finding out who falls in love. Thirteen Demon Princes borrows structure from Singularity with permission from its authors in order to provide the most entertaining dating game experience!
The characters you will be playing all are fantastic, over the top, sexy pieces of hellish delight. Even though they’re vastly different from one another, they all have needs that must be met, desires that must be acted upon, and feelings that cannot be ignored. Think of Hell less in the traditional sense of a place to send people who do evil deeds. Hell, and the host of demons who reside within, is a reflection of our values, and interrogating things we paint as “evil” can be valuable to us as an audience to our own culture. Thirteen Demon Princes is about the Fall, and is an exercise in identifying the humanity within the demonic, and vice versa.
But what are the mechanics this game uses? Well, there aren't really that many. Aside from the dating show script skeleton that the Host uses to help facilitate the pacing of the game, most play is freeform. Players act out their characters' actions and dialogue and The Host asks leading questions to stir the pot. Each unique Demon Prince also has a resource mechanic called Demonic Blood that they can give out to other players when they want to reward specific behavior. As you play through the script skeleton, you will be creating the beginning, middle, and final conclusion of an episode of Thirteen Demonic Princes!
In Thirteen Demon Princes is a core rulebook that contains all of the play information and advice you will need to run the game. It contains an outline of play, a "script" to follow to keep your episode on track, and even additional rules for turning your game into a season long affair!
It also comes with the eponymous Thirteen Demon Princes, a sordid company of demons of various genders, forms, and dispositions. Each Demon Prince comes with a Character Kit so you know who they are and exactly the best way to play them.
That's it! The game is pretty low-overhead. Aside from the stunning character art and writing, the game is pretty much written. This crowdfunding campaign exists to get funds to pull more people into this project and help make this project as cool as possible.
Each Demon Prince is written by a guest author. Our stunning cast of suitors is as follows:
The Demon Of Light And Darkness, Who Watches Over Searing Brightness And Impenetrable Shadows - by Frankie Garza
The Demon Of Lies And Deceit, Whose Illusions Tapestry The Whole of Creation - by Aser Tolentino
The Demon Of Bargains And Deals, Who Always Brokers Equal Exchanges In Both The Physical World And In Our Souls - by Tobie Abad
The Demon Of Knowledge, Whose Hoarded Libraries Span The Existence Of All Thought - by Aura Belle (One of the authors from our parent game, Singularity!)
The Demon Of Upheaval, Whose Destruction Levels Cities And Unmakes Kings - by Corv Leary
The Demon Of Nature’s Unbridled Power, Whose Storms Sink Continents And Who Lives Inside A Single Acorn - by Nora Blake
The Demon Of The Exchange And Portioning Out Of Power, Who Delights In Both Controlling And Being Controlled - by Rob Abrazado
The Demon Of Pestilence, Who Gathers Illnesses, Parasites, And Plagues Like Fine Pieces Of Art - by Megan Tolentino
The Demon Of Excess, Who Delights In Decadent Indulgences And Who Abhors Guilt Of All Forms - by Melody Watson
The Demon Of Dreams, Whose Nightmares Rock The Mountains And Whose Visions Put The Mistiest Rainforests To Shame - by Shannon Dapper
There are four main tiers to back Thirteen Demon Princes.
The first tier is our QUICKSTART rules. This will give you the basic text so you can start playing as soon as you back the game. It also comes with four set Demon Princes (minus character art) that have been written already by yours truly. This is a great backer level if you want to check out the game and see what's up, or if you might not play often but still want to help out.
The second tier is our DIGITAL RULES. This gets you the full PDF and EPUB document of the rules and will come with all Thirteen Demon Princes. This will give you an electronic copy of the entire game. This tier will also give you the QUICKSTART rules so you can start playing now while we produce the finished product.
The third tier is our PHYSICAL RULES. This is a nice softcover book that you can put on your shelf, carry with you to your game, or wrap up as a gift to a friend. It has the entirety of the rules in the same way that the DIGITAL RULES do, the Thirteen Demon Princes, and the QUICKSTART RULES. The softcover will be produced through DrivethruRPG's Print-On-Demand service. Once the book is ready you will receive a coupon to get the book at no charge, so all you will need to pay for after this is the shipping costs.
EDIT: There are now two extra backing levels thanks to Josh Jordan of Ginger Goat Press! Backers who want a PDF copy of Singularity in addition to their Thirteen Demon Princes can now add on to both the DIGITAL RULES and PHYSICAL RULES for an additional price! You can get the original Dating Sim RPG, our parent game and inspiration, in addition to Hell's Favorite Dating Show!
We have other tiers as well, including backing as a retailer or producing a full page ad as a commercial for the show.
Risks and challenges
This is my first Kickstarted project! I've been designing games at RiverhouseGames.com since 2015 and producing and selling these games at an amateur level since then. However, this will be my first "large" scale project.
The core of this game is already written. All that is left to create are the Character Kit writing and the character art.
I will be using these funds to secure art and character writing from various folks. There is an inherent risk involved in this as I have no sway over the lives of my artists or writers. While we all respect deadlines, life is inevitable. I will keep you appraised of any delays involved in the production of this game.
If the delay is with a writer, I will do my best to work with them within the confines of this project. If it looks like we will not make our release schedule, I will take on writing that Character Kit (the writer will still be paid, I'm not trying to swindle free work out of folks) in order to meet deadlines.
If the delay is with an artist, it will be a larger challenge as I do not have any visual art skills to bridge the gap. It will be important to set expectations early and make them clear up front. Hopefully this will not be an issue.
Printing will be taken care of through DriveThruRPG's Print-On-Demand service. Part of the project timeline will be ensuring that the book prints perfectly so that when you get your at-cost copy coupon you can just hit Go, pay shipping, and everything else is taken care of.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
