About this project
So BIG NEWS!
I have been accepted into the A.I.R. Vallauris Residency Program in Vallauris, France. This is an amazing opportunity for me to both grow as an artist and personally. It will give me the time to fully immerse myself in a new culture and 110% into my art.
"Real Eyes" is essentially a visual journal. It is a way for me to document my personal emotions, experiences, and ideas in a physical way. Each color and symbol is representative of something significant to me on that day. Explaining through words was never an easy thing for me to create, or even maintain as most journal writers can. However, art was always at my fingertips, ready to be put to good use.
Through the use of oil pastel and pencil, each individual piece will embody a day of occurrences, people, and thoughts. These drawings will be constructed spontaneously and immediately, so that they are able to capture as much of the original feelings. Ideally, the final series will contain approximately ten to fifteen collages.
This “Dear Diary…” approach holds a personal importance, as it is a very visual way to communicate my life. The fact that this project is proposed for an abroad experience makes it that much more vital to me personally, as it is a way to mark internal growth and change when influenced by new people, places, and cultures.
You can read the full project statement as well as view my past projects & bio on my personal website, karinmellin.com.
The funds being raised are only a partial amount of the actual cost, but will help to cover residency fee/deposit (for accommodations and studio), travel fare, art supplies and materials, as well as personal living expenses such as food during the duration of the session.
This is the 10th anniversary of A.I.R. Vallauris' Program and I am extremely excited to join them in April and get started on "Real Eyes". The residency will last for about five weeks, culminating in a shared exhibition with the other artists from the session before leaving France in mid-May.
Thank you so much for helping make this project happen!
