The Essential Guide to Potions and Oils:
For hundreds of years, potion creation has been a jealously guarded secret, each Potion Master instructing an apprentice based only on his own experiences, combined with trial and error. Now, Second Thought Games reveals those secrets with The Essential Guide to Potions and Oils.
This arcane volume contains one hundred recipes and instructions to safely and consistently produce potions and oils such as Liquid Limbs, Aqueous Ambulation, Desired Darkness and many others. More than just a recipe book, The Essential Guide to Potions and Oils is the accumulated wisdom of history's greatest Potion Masters, gathered and organized to maximize the success of anyone interested in the timeless art of potion making.
For use by both player and Game Master alike, this scholarly work is suitable for any fantasy game system. The Essential Guide to Potions and Oils contains advice on laboratory equipment and ingredient preparation, potion recipes, as well as descriptions of unique magical equipment.
Our goal is a 250 copy print run of The Essential Guide to Potions and Oils as a foil stamped 6" x 9" smythe-sewn, Faux Suede (Now Leather!) bound hardback. Surpassing our initial goal will lead to our creating a more ornate final product, with attained Stretch Goals resulting in an attached satin bookmark, gilded edging, or even replacing the suede cover with genuine leather (Done--See Update #11 for details)! No matter what, The Essential Guide to Potions and Oils will make an impressive addition to any gamer's library.

Why a Potion Guide?
I've always felt that the specific details of potion creation have always gotten short shrift in the RPGs I've played over the years, and I said as much to my wife. Imagine my surprise when she immediately decided to dedicate herself to the writing of a Potion Guide! Upon further reflection, though, the concept was a perfect fit for her. Besides being an amazing cook (as my waistline can attest to), Lisa is an avid researcher. For several months, various editions of Players Handbooks, DMs Guides, and Monster Manuals kept company with numerous plant identification guides and cook books on my wife's computer desk. The end result is The Essential Guide to Potions and Oils. For every player who wondered what a potion of giant strength might really be made out of, and for every GM looking for a perpetual adventure hook for their players, this book is for you.
What the Potion Guide Is:
The Essential Guide to Potions and Oils is written as a text book (obtained/recovered/stolen) from a College of Mages. It covers basic laboratory equipment and setup, ingredient preparation, and creation of common potions found in any fantasy RPG setting. All non-magical ingredients listed are real world substances, while magical beast parts/ingredients are taken from mythology and legend. This allows for the greatest compatibility between the Potion Guide and any game system used.
What the Potion Guide is Not:
- The Essential Guide to Potions and Oils is not a price guide. Written as a text book, there are no prices listed for equipment or ingredients--such matters are best left up to the GM, anyway.
- The Potion Guide is not the final word--there are just as many ways to make an invisibility potion as there are to make a cake. I envision every owner of such a guide personalizing it with their own field notes, alternate ingredients and recipes--eventually transforming each tome into a uniquely personal treasure.
- This Potion Guide is not real. Although well-researched and written by my wife, and then edited with a gamer's eye by myself, this is a work of fantasy/fiction. This book is intended to vividly enhance any fantasy role playing game (RPG), is sure to give a player/character with potion making skills a wonderful prop at the gaming table, and lend any bookshelf some medieval charm. Please do not email me later to complain that boiling tea leaves, a pinch of crushed quartz, and the liver out of your neighbor's cat didn't really REALLY make you invisible! (You'd probably be the same backer who wanted to name the Oil of Slipperiness!)
Stretch Goals, you say?
*All Physical Copies will have a Leather Cover! (See Update #11 for details)
*Bookmark has been unlocked! (Stretch Goal #1)
The Essential Guide to Potions and Oils is written in a style that demands something more than a glossy softbound printing. It's an arcane and ancient tome of potion lore; we want it to look like one, too! Our initial funding goal guarantees the basics: Prestige faux suede cover, gold foil stamping, smythe sewn binding, and 60 lb. creme paper. We'd like to add gilded (gold) edging, an attached bookmark, and a leather cover to make it shine. We'd also like to include some extra content to complement the Potion Guide, such as Potion Inventory Sheets and Potion Creation Sheets. Quite simply, more Backers directly equates to a greater end result for all.
The Stretch Goals--as each of these Stretch Goals are met, the following upgrades and additional rewards will be automatically included as part of your pledge at Potion Master level and above.
$5800 -- Funded! Potion Masters rejoice!
$6000 - 1/4" double-faced satin bookmark sewn into the binding
$7000 - 10 pack of Potion Inventory Sheets included with the Guide.
$8000 - Gilded Edging of the Potions and Oils Guide
$9000 - 10 pack of Potion Creation Sheets included with the Guide
Suede cover has been upgraded to a Leather Cover! (See Update #11 for details)
Risks and challenges
Every project has its risks. This is not our first Kickstarter, though, having successfully funded, printed, and delivered on Ryubix Manor earlier this year. That experience has certainly clarified the type of risks involved in a project such as this.
Writing Delays--The Essential Guide to Potions and Oils has been completely written. Having said this, the top pledge levels involve renaming up to 21 potions in the Guide. This requires prompt communication/response from all parties concerned, and minor re-writes to the manuscript to accommodate those pledges. Our timeline in this regard is to have these changes completed within three weeks of the project's conclusion. Any delay arising from this should be minimal.
Printing Delays--Our last KS project, Ryubix Manor, ran 4 weeks longer to fulfill than we had anticipated, due to our inexperience with the printer, and the printer's own workload. For our part, we have a firm understanding of what is expected and required before going to print, it now boils down to our place in the queue. Such delays are unavoidable, short of setting our fulfillment date out to 2016 so we can brag about getting you the book 18 months earlier than planned. Our estimated deliver date of December is just that--our best and honest estimate based on every factor within our control.
In short, our biggest risk is in a delay. Completion of the project is not an issue.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
