$50 Master Curator
For those who wish to maintain continuity of subject matter, the possession of all interrelated material is a must. You have chosen to receive the prestige leather bound copy of Liber Veneficii. as well as a digital copy of both Liber Veneficii and a digital copy of the companion tome, Liber Elixirium. In addition, your name (real or character) will appear on the Contributor's Page of Liber Veneficii as a Master Curator. (International Backers will be invoiced for shipping at the time of delivery.)
For use by both player and Game Master alike, Liber Veneficii is written as a scholarly work, authored in the distant past by the College of Mages, and used to train guards, assayers, and praegustators.
Liber Veneficii contains real-world information on plants, snakes and vipers, arachnids, mushrooms, metals, and compounds, as well as poisonous properties of mythical creatures. Included in this volume are 12 unique fantasy recipes for deadly concoctions, a section on methods of poison delivery, and unique magical items.
Our goal is a 250 copy print run of Liber Veneficii featuring: Genuine Black Leather cover, silver gilded edging, silver foil stamping on the front cover and spine, smythe sewn binding for long-lasting durability, and a silk bookmark sewn into the binding. The finished volume will be a beautiful addition to any player or Game Master's library.
Liber Veneficii's interior contains full-color, scientific style illustrations, a number of which will be created by the talented artist, Jeff Ward. Jeff 's work can be seen in DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Green Ronin (Spaceship Zero RPG), Midas World, West End Games, Ad-Hoc Productions, Adept Press, Bastion Press, and many more. See more of Jeff's phenomenal work at http://www.stungeonstudios.com.
Here is a sample page from Liber Veneficii for your inspection.
What Liber Veneficii is:
Liber Veneficii is written as a text book (obtained/recovered/stolen) from the College of Mages. It covers basic identification of common poisons that could be found in any fantasy RPG setting. All non-magical poisons listed are real world substances, while magical poison/venoms are taken from mythology and legend. This allows for the greatest compatibility between Liber Veneficii and any game system used.
Many of the poisons described in Liber Veneficii are real, as are many of the zoological drawings associated with the plants and creatures therein. Well-researched and written by Lisa Howard, and edited with a gamer's eye by Vincent Howard, this work combines both fact and fiction.
Liber Veneficii is intended to vividly enhance any fantasy role playing game (RPG), is sure to give a player/character with poison use skills a wonderful prop at the gaming table, and lend any bookshelf some medieval charm.
Liber Veneficii is the perfect companion to Liber Elixirium (The Essential Guide to Potions and Oils), the former being both the same size (6" x 9") and page count (144) as the latter. For those not familiar with Liber Elixirium, a photo of that most worthy tome is in order:
What Liber Veneficii is Not:
Liber Veneficii is not a price guide. Written as a text book, there are no prices listed for equipment or ingredients-- as we feel such matters are best left up to the GM.
Liber Veneficii is not 100% accurate, nor is it to be taken as the authoritative final word--listed lethal doses (and their antidotes) are approximations based on available information, if not wholly fabricated. If you are bitten by a Black Widow spider while cleaning out the tool shed, call the Poison Control Center or a hospital immediately, do not consult this book for help!
Higher Level Pledge Tiers and the Use of Names
Higher Level Pledge Tiers allow you, the Backer, to immortalize your name (real or character) within the pages of Liber Veneficii. All names submitted are subject to approval before inclusion. Since part of the book's appeal is it's faux-historical aspect, inappropriate names such as MageKilla666 or Asteroid Blaster will not be accepted. Names of famous literary/film characters protected by IP rights such as Gandalf or Drizzdt (or any permutations of) may not be used. Additionally, as the book is system neutral for inclusion with any Swords & Sorcery type fantasy game, titles including specific locations (i.e. Lord of Greyhawk, Protector of Killian Castle, Master of the Seven Seas) may not be used. We will work with you to assure mutual satisfaction of the name chosen. If you wish to pledge at one of these levels and are in doubt, contact us about your name choice before pledging.
What About Stretch Goals?
We listened to our previous Backers, and learned a valuable lesson from Liber Elixirium. With a project of this nature, Backers wanted all or nothing. Rather than start with a basic book (suede cover, no frills) that required increasing monetary goals to build a better product, we're aiming for the best looking book we can produce right out of the gate. If, however, response to Liber Veneficii is overwhelming, we'll look into something appropriately cool to include into the mix.
How will Shipping Costs be determined?
U.S. Backers will see an additional $5 charge attached to their pledge for shipping when they back for a physical copy. We're based here in the States, so shipping fees are a relatively straightforward proposition.
International Backers will be invoiced for shipping at the time of delivery, once Liber Veneficii is in our hands.
Who is Second Thought Games?
Second Thought Games is the husband and wife team of Vince and Lisa R. Miller-Howard.
Vince is a life-long gamer and author of three system neutral adventures: Ryubix Manor, City of the Lich, and WishTaker (all successfully funded and delivered here on Kickstarter).
Lisa R. Miller-Howard is the author of last year's successful Kickstarter, Liber Elixirium, as well as Director of Publications for Inter-Disciplinary Press based in Oxford, United Kingdom.
Risks and challenges
Every project has its risks. This is our fifth Kickstarter, though, having successfully funded, printed, and delivered on Ryubix Manor, City of the Lich, WishTaker, and Liber Elixirium. That experience has certainly clarified the type of risks involved in a project such as this.
Writing Delays--Liber Veneficii has been completely written. Having said that, the top pledge levels involve the addition of 32 Backer names to the text. This requires prompt communication/response from all parties concerned, and minor re-writes to the manuscript to accommodate those pledges. Our timeline in this regard is to have the changes completed within four weeks of the project's conclusion. As we've scheduled 10 weeks for the completion of illustrations, this will not be an issue.
Printing Delays--Our experience with various printers has taught us to expect minor delays (1-5 days) based on queue order once the manuscript files have been submitted. We use U.S. printers which, although more expensive for small print runs, completely avoids the months of delays involved with overseas delivery, holiday stoppages, teamster strikes, Customs inspections, and paperwork. If there are hold ups with the printer, you'll be kept in the loop on our progress. To date, though, this has not ever been an issue.
Shipping Delays: Our biggest challenge on previous projects has been the cooperation of the US Postal Service delivering our product in a timely manner. We'll be using UPS Mail Innovation for fulfillment this time around,
Barring any natural catastrophe, physical completion/printing of this project is not an issue.
Our delivery date of November is just that--our best and honest estimate based on every factor within our control.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
