About this project
Greetings from the Burlesque Public Works Division, an offshoot of Minneapolis-based creative studio Burlesque of North America. We specialize in designing and producing indoor and outdoor large scale murals, paintings and installations. We have completed dozens of brightly-colored murals and paintings for 3M, Soundset, Eaux Claires Festival, Red Bull, The W Hotel in Austin TX, SMAAASH at Mall of America, Can Can Wonderland, Radisson Hotels, and more.
We are planning to design and paint a massive series of murals spanning nine garage doors on the side of the former American Can Company building on Prior Avenue in Saint Paul. These murals will tell the story of the Hamline-Midway neighborhood, featuring images which honor its history, including the railroads which ran through it, the legacy of J. J. Hill, and the Minnesota State Fair which we will draw from the Minnesota Historical Society and the Ramsey County Historical Society. We’re also excited to work with members of the community to learn what’s important to them about their neighborhood and to translate that into these big and bold murals, helping bring new life to an area undergoing a revival thanks to the arrival of new businesses such as Can Can Wonderland and Black Stack Brewing.
When viewed together, the nine 20’ X 16’ doors will form a cohesive story of the area’s railroads and structures, and the history and integrity of the workforce in the Hamline-Midway area and its rejuvenation as a center of creativity and enterprise. Our mission is to bring to light the Midwestern modesty and blue-collar soul of this thriving capital city.
This is a huge project and we can’t do it alone.
In 2016, Nick and I were fortunate to be the recipients of a Challenge Grant from The Knight Foundation to put towards this project. This matching grant for $20,000 (half of this project’s $40,000 budget) along with the additional generous backing of Orton Developments, Can Can Wonderland, and Ironlak Paint, has helped put us very close to reaching our full goal. We’re asking for your help by contributing to push this project over the edge to make this mural as mind-blowing as possible. Any remaining funds at the end of this project will be used towards other underfunded public art projects that we have in the works.
Read below to check out more of our mural work and to see some of the great rewards we have lined up for our generous supporters.

Risks and challenges
This project has already been approved and we have received backing from Orton Developments (the building owners), the Knight Foundation, Can Can Wonderland, and Ironlak paint, but we need to receive this last bit of funding to make it happen. We will be working full time on bringing the murals to life just as soon as final funding comes through.
We are always at the mercy of the weather when creating exterior work, and there is always a risk that painting can be delayed daily. However, once the murals have been started, they will be completed as soon as the elements will allow.
We are fortunate enough to have the talents and powers of the Burlesque of North America design and publishing firm behind us to work on producing the various reward items that we are offering. Just as soon as the Kickstarter ends, we will be doing everything in our power to make sure all bonus prints, shirts and stickers, and bespoke pieces of artwork are both produced and delivered in a high quality and timely fashion.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
